Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces in Ceramic and Ceramic Metal Systems written by Joseph Pask and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Download or read book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering written by Peter Kittel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 2020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Albuquerque Convention Center was the venue for the 1993 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. Walter F. Stewart, of Los Alamos National Laboratory, was conference chairman. Albuquerque is near Los Alamos National Laboratory which has been a significant contributor to the cryogenics community since the early days of the Manhattan Project. Albuquerque is also the home of the Air Force's Phillips Laboratory which has a lead role in developing cryocoolers. The program consisted of 322 CEC papers, more than a 30% increase from CEC-91 and 20% more than CEC-89. This was the largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 249 papers are published here, in Volume 39 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Once again the volume is published in two books. This volume includes a cumulative index for the CEC volumes from 1975-1993 (volumes 21,23,25,27,29,31,33,35,37, and 39 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering). The first 20 volumes are indexed in Volume 20. A companion cumulative index for the ICMC volumes (volumes 22 through 40) appears in Volume 40. This is my first volume as editor. I would not have been able to have done it without the assistance of the many reviewers. Especially appreciated was the instruction manual left me by the previous editor, Ron Fast.

Download or read book Fiber Optic Sensors written by Eric Udd and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FIBER OPTIC SENSORS Discover the latest in fiber optic sensors and their applications in this new edition Fiber-optic sensors are a powerful class of sensor that uses high-bandwidth optical fibers to convey a large amount of measured information through a single fiber. The advantages of such a mode of measurement are clear: they are intrinsically safe in explosive environments (no sparks), lightweight, compact, robust, and potentially inexpensive. As a result, their uses are manifold for a wide range of physical and chemical phenomena including temperature, strain, pressure, acoustic fields, position, velocity, rotation, acceleration, electrical current, liquid level, biochemical composition, and chemical concentration. Fiber Optic Sensors introduces and familiarizes the reader with a broad range of fiber optic sensor techniques and applications. The latest edition of this popular text builds upon the sound introductions to the fundamentals of the topic provided by earlier editions by introducing the latest technologies that have been developed in recent years. Gathering the latest research and publications on the subject in one place, the book provides a comprehensive look at fiber optic sensors with an eye to what’s new in the field. Readers of Fiber Optic Sensors’ third edition will also find: An exploration of the technology within new applications in areas such as aerospace, defense, oil and gas, medical, electric power, manufacturing, environmental, and robotics Updated chapters on the emergency of interferometric sensors, distributed sensing, and critical components A new and fully-updated comprehensive index Fiber Optic Sensors is a useful reference for engineers, scientists, technical managers, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

The book assesses the literature as cultural history, with a focus on issues such as legal reform, marital reform, surveillance, Germanophobia, masculinity/femininity, the "best-seller", the arms race, international diplomacy and the concept of "popular" literature. The work also addresses specific issues related to the relationship of law to literature, such as: the law in literature; the law as literature, the role of literature in surveillance and policing; the interpretation of legal issues by literature; the degree to which literature describes and interprets law; the description of legal processes in detective literature; and the connections between detective literature and cultural practices and transitions.
