Book excerpt: Known as the place where glassblowers produced masterpieces for international markets in the 1800s and where some of New England's oldest homes still stand, Sandwich is a vibrant community rich in history. Founded in 1637, this gateway town to Cape Cod is actually a time capsule of the last four centuries, from prehistory, when it was the territory of the Native American Wampanoags, to the tourist destination and bedroom community of Boston and Providence it is today. In Sandwich: Cape Cod's Oldest Town, the reader will be taken on a historical journey to enchanting places, such as the Sandwich Glass Museum, featuring masterpieces from the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company of the mid-1800s, and Heritage Plantation's seventy-six acres of landscaped gardens and antique displays, including a working 1912 carousel. Visit the Green Briar Nature Center, which produces jam made by the sun; a museum featuring native son Thornton W. Burgess's "Briar Patch" children's stories; the venerable, classic saltbox-type Hoxie House, where life in those earliest years is re-created; and the Wing and Nye homesteads, which in summer represent several centuries of Sandwich culture and history.

Book Missouri and Maine by RV

Download or read book Missouri and Maine by RV written by Jan Young and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-11-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I traveled extensively when I was working but, like many road warriors, never got to see anything but airports and conference rooms. So, after I retired, my wife and I bought a motor home and began a series of extensive trips. This book recounts our 2009 travels: a short one-month trip through central Missouri and a much longer trip through New York and New England and down the east coast to Washington DC, with special emphasis on Maine. It tells of the sights we saw and the surprises we found, both positive and negative. It includes several tales of the road and describes some mistakes we made and things we wish we had done better. The book provides maps that show where we went and includes over 160 full color photos of our journey. It discusses the preparations we made and discloses not only our budget for the trip, but the amounts we actually spent. And at the back, it lists the places we went and the campgrounds we used together with available addresses, phone numbers, websites and geo coordinates.

Book The Captain s Widow of Sandwich

Download or read book The Captain s Widow of Sandwich written by Megan Taylor Shockley and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1852 Hannah Rebecca Crowell married sea captain William Burgess and set sail. Within three years, Rebecca Burgess had crossed the equator eleven times and learned to navigate a vessel. In 1856, 22-year-old Rebecca saved the ship Challenger as her husband lay dying from dysentery. The widow returned to her family’s home in Sandwich, Massachusetts, where she refused all marriage proposals and died wealthy in 1917. This is the way Burgess recorded her story in her prodigious journals and registers, which she donated to the local historical society upon her death, but there is no other evidence that this dramatic event occurred exactly this way. In The Captain’s Widow of Sandwich, Megan Taylor Shockley examines how Burgess constructed her own legend and how the town of Sandwich embraced that history as its own. Through careful analysis of myriad primary sources, Shockley also addresses how Burgess dealt with the conflicting gender roles of her life, reconciling her traditionally masculine adventures at sea and her independent lifestyle with the accepted ideals of the period’s “Victorian woman.”

Book Museum Branding

Download or read book Museum Branding written by Margot Wallace and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museums have unequaled brands in the world of learning and culture. They have earned the recognition and loyalty of their many audiences. The challenge is sustaining image, loyalty and support as audiences shift, grow, and change. Museum Branding: Reimagining the Museum is a forward-looking survey of museums as they navigate the present, and plan for the future, holding steady to their heritage. It looks at brands that have refreshed their identity, reframed their missions, and reconfirmed their right to audience loyalty and support. Museums of all sizes, genres, and geography – over forty of them – exemplify audience-centered branding practices outlined in nineteen chapters that include Collection and Exhibitions, Archives, Fundraising and Development, Partnerships, Talks and Speakers, and Videos. The chapter on Data adds a new perspective to branding literature. The chapter on Discussion Groups builds on the branding sustained and advanced by successful virtual programs. The Chapter on Research and Development gives essential priority developing relationships with prospective members, donors and supporters. The chapter on Publications shows the smart extension of branding into many platforms. An extensive index recognizes the value of this tool for searching specific concepts and museums.
