Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was an endless redwood wilderness, populated by only the hardiest of people. Then, the sudden blast of a steam whistle echoed across the canyons and the valleys-the iron horse had arrived in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Driven by the need to transport materials like lumber and lime to the rest of the world, the railroad brought people seeking out new ways of living, from the remote outposts along Bean and Zayante Creeks to the bustling towns of Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. Bridges and tunnels marked the landscape, and each new station, siding and spur signaled activity: businesses, settlements, and vacation spots. Summer resorts in the mountains evolved into sprawling residential communities which formed the backbone of the towns of the San Lorenzo Valley today. Much of the history of the locations along the route has since been forgotten. This is their story. Download or read book The Hardest Deal of All written by Charles C. Bolton and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race has shaped public education in the Magnolia State, from Reconstruction through the Carter Administration. For The Hardest Deal of All: The Battle Over School Integration in Mississippi, 1870-1980 Charles C. Bolton mines newspaper accounts, interviews, journals, archival records, legal and financial documents, and other sources to uncover the complex story of one of Mississippi's most significant and vexing issues. This history closely examines specific events--the after-math of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the 1966 protests and counter-demonstrations in Grenada, and the efforts of particular organizations--and carefully considers the broader picture. Despite a separate but equal doctrine established in the late nineteenth century, the state's racially divided school systems quickly developed vast differences in terms of financing, academic resources, teacher salaries, and quality of education. As one of the nation's poorest states, Mississippi could not afford to finance one school system adequately, much less two. For much of the twentieth century, whites fought hard to preserve the dual school system, in which the maintenance of one-race schools became the most important measure of educational quality. Blacks fought equally hard to end segregated schooling, realizing that their schools would remain underfunded and understaffed as long as they were not integrated. Charles C. Bolton is professor and chair of history and co-director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He is the coauthor of Mississippi: An Illustrated History and coeditor of The Confessions of Edward Isham: A Poor White Life of the Old South . Bolton's work has also appeared in the Journal of Southern History, Journal of Mississippi History, and Mississippi Folklife .

Download or read book Inside the Investments of Warren Buffett written by Yefei Lu and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, Warren Buffett and his partners have backed some of the twentieth century's most profitable, trendsetting companies. But how did they know they were making the right investments? What did Buffet and his partners look for in an up-and-coming company, and how can others replicate their approach? A gift to Buffett followers who have long sought a pattern to the investor's success, Inside the Investments of Warren Buffett presents the most detailed analysis to date of Buffet's long-term investment portfolio. Yefei Lu, an experienced investor, starts with Buffett's interest in the Sanborn Map Company in 1958 and tracks nineteen more of his major investments in companies like See's Candies, the Washington Post, GEICO, Coca-Cola, US Air, Wells Fargo, and IBM. Accessing partnership letters, company documents, annual reports, third-party references, and other original sources, Lu pinpoints what is unique about Buffett's timing, instinct, use of outside knowledge, and postinvestment actions, and he identifies what could work well for all investors in companies big and small, domestic and global. His substantial chronology accounts for broader world events and fluctuations in the U.S. stock market, suggesting Buffett's most important trait may be the breadth of his expertise.

Download or read book Kansas City Scavenger written by Anne Kniggendorf and published by Scavenger. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By now, many of you are well versed in the Secret side of Kansas City, all that is weird, wonderful, and obscure: the murderous museum doll, the castle just for prisoners, ill-conceived Egyptian décor, etc. But you long for more, don't you? Once you've gained a fresh perspective on familiar locales, you're also likely to develop a knack for spotting details--which is exactly what scavenging is all about. For instance, just where in Shawnee is a time capsule buried? Can you find the toilet paper holder on the exterior of a Harrisonville building? Have you stepped on the marker for the world's shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in Blue Springs a hundred times but never stopped to read it? Kansas City Scavenger will have you looking way up high, way down low, and around every corner as you puzzle through each rhyme to find the features along the hunt. Local authors and sisters Anne and Leslie Kniggendorf lead you through their hometown while helping you catch some truly odd details along the way. Is every part of town included? Absolutely not! But what's for sure is that with this book in hand and some sensible shoes on your feet, you'll get to explore areas you've probably only passed through. And we want to see you hard at work! #kcscavenger to show us your adventure.
