Download or read book The Saints Everlasting Rest written by Richard Baxter and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Hopeful Puritan Perspective on Suffering and Death In the throes of a long illness and confronting the possibility of death, 17th-century theologian Richard Baxter found comfort in the reality of heaven that awaits believers of Christ. During his recovery, Baxter wrote about the afterlife in what would become his best-selling book. The Saints' Everlasting Rest meditates on what Scripture reveals about heaven, helping believers live an abundant, God-honoring life in anticipation of eternal rest. Baxter encourages readers not to become distracted or discouraged by the temporal as he refocuses their minds on the eternal. Confronting difficult topics including sin, suffering, and fear of death, he also emphasizes God's sufficient grace and how the promise of heaven enriches life on earth. Foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada: Inspiring message from the founder and CEO of the Joni and Friends International Disability Center Great for Personal and Group Study: Each chapter ends with questions for reflection, tackling issues including death, abundant joy, security in Christ, and patience through affliction Modernized Version of a Puritan Classic: Abridged and edited, with a detailed summary of Baxter's life and work, along with short introductions to each chapter Biblical Support for Dealing with Grief or Illness: Explains suffering and death from a Christ-centered perspective, with practical tips for living a heavenly life

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints' Happiness, Together With the Several Steps Leading Thereunto: Delivered in Divers Lectures on the Beatitudes; Being Part of Christ's Sermon on the Mount, Contained in the Fifth of Matthew IT will probably by most readers be deemed sufficient, by way of introduction to one of the numerous works of this author, to reproduce the brief notice' of him which was prefixed by the late Rev James Sherman to his edition of his Exposition of Hosea - T. S. IT is deeply to be lamented that no life was given to the church of this excellent minister of Christ; concerning whom Mr Baxter says, If all the Episcopalians had been like Archbishop Usher, all the Presbyterians like Mr Stephen Marshall, and all the Independents like Mr Jeremiah Burroughs, the breaches of the church would soon have been healed.' From the few scattered notices of him in different authors, and chiefly from those of his enemies, we learn that he was born in 1599. He studied and took his degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge; after which he became colleague with the Rev. Edmund Calamy, at Bury St Edmund's. In the year 1631 he became rector of Tivetshall, in the county of Norfolk; but upon the publication of Bishop Wren's Articles and Injunctions, in 1636, he was suspended and deprived of his living. The Earl of Warwick, who was the friend and patron of the persecuted ministers, and one of their constant hearers, gave him an asylum in his house, till the fire of persecution, which raged so strongly against him, obliged him to fly to Holland. He was chosen assistant minister to the church at Rotterdam, of which the Rev. William Bridge was pastor. The violence of party strife at that period raised against him many accusations for leaving his country, but his vindication of himself and his conduct in retiring to Rotterdam is so ample and circumstantial, and withal written in so meek and humble a spirit, as to raise in the reader a high estimation of his veracity and piety. Book The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment

Download or read book The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I have learned to be content in whatever state] I am'' (Phil. 4:11) Anyone who lacks true contentment may find it in this book. If not, it will be because that one would not follow the very clear and simple instructions given. The teaching is from the Bible, yet it must be described as unique. Nowhere else will you find such unusual, but Biblically authenticated thoughts: He will teach you that contentment lies in subtraction, not in addition; that the ABC's of Christianity are nothing like what you thought them to be; that there is a mystery of contentment, but that once you have learned the way from Christ's word, you will be able to attain such a depth of contentment as you never before dreamed existed. This is a key book for building up Christian maturity. Christian Contentment, what is it? ''It is a sweet, inward heart thing. It is a work of the Spirit indoors. It is a box of precious ointment, very comforting and useful for troubled hearts in times of troubled conditions.

Book Constrained by His Love

Download or read book Constrained by His Love written by L. J. van Valen and published by Christian Focus. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Murray McCheyne was born in 1813 and died in 1843. His life, was nothing short of extraordinary. Given the charge of St Peter's Church, Dundee at the age of 23, even his trial sermon was blessed, with two people being saved. The church saw astonishing growth, overflowing with 1,100 hearers. He stands today as one of the outstanding preachers in the history of Scotland. His spirituality, and focus on the work of Christ was immediately apparent - with hostile crowds melting as they realised the sincerity of the man and the power of his message. His life is a lesson to us all, that when we submit to our Sovereign Lord and his plan, he can and will use our bodies, no matter how weak, our gifts, no matter how limited and our lives, no matter how short.
