Book excerpt: By 1852, just five years after Brigham Young and his fellow Latter-day Saints began settling the valleys of the Intermountain West, the global distribution of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was much more European than American. Young and his counselors in the First Presidency planned a special missionary conference in the newly constructed adobe Salt Lake Tabernacle on the temple block. Over the weekend of August 28-29, church leaders made two landmark announcements over the pioneer pulpit: a flurry of global mission assignments and a spirited defense of plural marriage. During the Saturday afternoon session, the First Presidency assigned one hundred Mormon men to proselytize in distant lands, the largest cohort of full-time elders in the church's three-decade history. This book tells the tales of eight men called to Wales, Prussia, Gibraltar, the Cape of Good Hope, the Sandwich Islands, China, Siam, and Australia.

Download or read book Saints written by Françoise Meltzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the modern world has largely dismissed the figure of the saint as a throwback, we remain fascinated by excess, marginality, transgression, and porous subjectivity—categories that define the saint. In this collection, Françoise Meltzer and Jas Elsner bring together top scholars from across the humanities to reconsider our denial of saintliness and examine how modernity returns to the lure of saintly grace, energy, and charisma. Addressing such problems as how saints are made, the use of saints by political and secular orders, and how holiness is personified, Saints takes us on a photo tour of Graceland and the cult of Elvis and explores the changing political takes on Joan of Arc in France. It shows us the self-fashioning of culture through the reevaluation of saints in late-antique Judaism and Counter-Reformation Rome, and it questions the political intent of underlying claims to spiritual attainment of a Muslim sheikh in Morocco and of Sephardism in Israel. Populated with the likes of Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and Padre Pio, this book is a fascinating inquiry into the status of saints in the modern world.

Book excerpt: The now legendary character created by Leslie Charteris has survived nearly three-quarters of a century of perilous action and narrow escapes with nary a hair out of place nor the slightest jolt to his jauntily tipped halo. From his earliest days battling "crooks, blood suckers, traders in vice and damnation" (and cracking the occasional safe on the side), the Saint has captured the imaginations of millions. Using the voluminous correspondence and writings of author Leslie Charteris and examining the many incarnations of Simon Templar, alias "The Saint," in other media, a detailed history emerges. Includes plot synopses of the radio and television programs, with air dates and production credits; descriptions of the movies and their credits; a bibliography, reviews of the books, and quotes from the principals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ultimate missionary training center is in our homes," declared Elder David A. Bednar in his 2019 address, "Prepared to Receive Every Needful Thing." Member missionaries-parents, children, youth, and leaders-of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognize that in order to play their part in gathering Israel, home-centered preparation is vital.Preparing Tomorrow's Missionaries Today is a practical, intuitive, and fun approach to become a courageous member missionary now, and for some, a more successful full-time missionary soon. In other words, a most effective disciple of Jesus Christ at home and abroad. This book addresses a dilemma all who want to be faithful member missionaries face, especially those preparing to serve full-time: "How do I share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others in a comfortable and natural way?" In traditional, Church-supported missionary training centers, those who have been called to serve are generously and ably taught what to say. Within these pages we assist home-centered missionary training centers by teaching the reader how to say it. Following the instructions within Preach My Gospel and modern-day prophets' teachings, in this volume tomorrow's legion of missionaries will learn valuable communication skills using friendly methods honed from the authors' years of experience. This is their contribution to making homes more effective missionary training centers-a supportive tool for those who want to confidently proclaim beloved truths near and far.
