Born in Peru in 1579, he died at age sixty. His life combined the apostolic zeal of Saint Dominic, the simple love for creation of Saint Francis and the endless compassion for the poor and sick of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. In 1962, he became one of the few saints canonized by Pope John XXIII. Saint Martin did not write any books or preach any sermons. His life was his preaching. He initiated a new expression of the spiritual life: radical, simple and holy. He had the gift of spontaneous joy and a capacity for turning the suffering and oppression of the poor into an encounter with God. For that he is known today as the patron saint of social justice. The author is well imbued with the spirit of Martin de Porres as a fellow Dominican and as a student who lived in the area where Martin grew up and ministered in Peru. As he states in the Introduction to this book, “I have spent many hours snooping around and praying in many of Martin’s secret hideouts!” Each chapter concludes with pertinent reflection questions that can be used for group discussion or personal reflection. Come explore the life and spirituality of this poor friar from South America who now lives in the splendor of God’s kingdom. Anyone with a compassionate heart toward those oppressed by society will come to love and hold him in esteem.

Download or read book Black Saint of the Americas written by Celia Cussen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1962, as the struggle for civil rights heated up in the United States and leaders of the Catholic Church prepared to meet for Vatican Council II, Pope John XXIII named the first black saint of the Americas, the Peruvian Martín de Porres (1579–1639), and designated him the patron of racial justice. The son of a Spanish father and a former slavewoman from Panamá, Martín served a lifetime as the barber and nurse at the great Dominican monastery in Lima. This book draws on visual representations of Martín and the testimony of his contemporaries to produce the first biography of this pious and industrious black man from the cosmopolitan capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. The book vividly chronicles the evolving interpretations of his legend and his miracles, and traces the centuries-long campaign to formally proclaim Martín de Porres a hero of universal Catholicism.

Come and journey with Blessed Sára Salkhaházi through Nazi-occupied Hungary, with Venerable Augustus Tolton through late-nineteenth-century Illinois, with Servant of God Dorothy Day through Depression-era New York, with St. Martín de Porres through seventeenth-century Peru, with St. Óscar Romero through twentieth-century El Salvador on the verge of civil war, with Servant of God Thea Bowman through Civil Rights-era Mississippi, and finally, with Servant of God Julia Greeley through turn-of-the-century Colorado. Each week of Lent is dedicated to one of these exemplars of faith and action, prayer and perseverance. Each day Monday through Saturday follows the same format: a reflection on the life or writings of the saint or Servant of God, a Scripture selection from the day’s mass readings, and two meditative prayer suggestions, one based on the saint or Servant of God’s life, and one based on the Scripture. Each week also highlights an aspect of Catholic Social Teaching that the saint or Servant of God exemplified in their life. On Sundays, we rest in Scripture and sacrament. It’s our prayer this lent that we may be reminded that we are all called to holiness and that there are no unlikely saints.

Book excerpt: In each generation, heroes of the Faith, whom the Church recognizes as saints, emerge. There are many characteristics that they have in common, but none thus far have used cell phones, played PlayStation video games, or searched for information on Google. That is about to change. A young "computer geek" named Carlo Acutis, who created a website cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle in the world and died of leukemia a year later at age fifteen, was beatified in November 2019, after a healing miracle in Brazil was attributed to his intercession. Since the beatification ceremony one year later, solemn crowds have been filing past the exposed relics of the blessed youth in Assisi's Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Carlo is a sign of contradiction in the modern world who serves as a heroic model for today's young people--a teenager who programmed computers and enjoyed films and comics yet lived as an authentic and sincere disciple of Christ. In these pages, you'll discover how he embraced the Faith as a boy and developed the virtues necessary to live a Christ-centered life in a secular society, how he overcame the vices that plagued him, and how he gracefully dealt with heartaches he could not divulge even to his parents. When he developed leukemia, he offered his suffering both for Pope Benedict XVI and for the Catholic Church, saying: "I offer all the suffering I will have to undergo for the Lord, for the Pope, and the Church." In this surprising and inspiring book, you'll also learn: How Carlo became holy, in only a few short years The young man's unusual loneliness and how he dealt with it His strategy for resisting peer pressure How he had fun without losing control and learned to resist gluttony How he interacted with teen girls who became his friends Why his explanations about the Mass are used in today's catechism classes in Italy How he dealt with friends who were sexually promiscuous and what he told them How he responded to the shocking news that he was dying (which happened two weeks later) His remarkable Eucharistic Miracles Exhibition--made possible by his computer skills--that is now touring churches all over Europe
