Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. R. R. Tolkien, the beloved author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, brings to his work a great treasure--his Christian faith. Tolkien's literary works are so popular in part because, in some sense, they pertain to the real world. This present volume is an attempt to understand better the deep Christian influences on his work but also to explore the relevance of Tolkien's work for theology today. After examining Tolkien's fiction in order better to appreciate Christian influences, this volume takes a closer look at Tolkien's theology of fantasy, his response to the more skeptical origins of religion research, and applies his work to contemporary questions about method in biblical studies. Tolkien's Christianity informed all he wrote. Moreover, his own theology of fantasy holds great promise for contemporary theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A lucid, thorough and fresh exploration of the material. This is an exceedingly helpful study and may be the best single textbook on the subject. Previously, there was little of note in between inadequate introductions to Hindu thought and the more specialized primary or secondary materials. Organ is a competent philosopher and presents the 'Hindu quest' in a scholarly and readable form...it is a key book for undergraduate libraries and would be an invaluable asset in a course which dealt seriously and at any length with the Hindu tradition. Excellent bibliography." --Choice "This is not just another book on Hinduism, but a source of systematic information..." --Bibliography of Philosophy "This scholarly and perceptive account makes Hindu beliefs and practices intelligible by showing how the contradictions which have puzzled Westerners are rooted in Human Diversity." --The Review of Metaphysics

Download or read book More Studies on the C rv ka Lok yata written by Ramkrishna Bhattacharya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to the author’s Studies on the Cārvāka/Lokāyata. Materialism appeared with different names at least from the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, the time of the Buddha. Some evidence of materialist thought is also found in the Upaniṣads. The epic, Rāmāyaṇa, features Jābāli, a proto-materialist character who denies the existence of the Other World, heaven and hell. Full-fledged materialist doctrines are also available in the works of the various opponents of materialism. The book deals with both the Pre-Cārvākas and the Cārvākas. For some unknown reason, all texts, including commentaries, of the Cārvāka/Lokāyata were lost after the twelfth century CE. However, on the basis of available fragments, the fundamental tenets of this system can still be reconstructed. This text contains the results of the most recent research in materialism in India.
