Download or read book The Russians in Los Angeles Classic Reprint written by Lillian Sokoloff and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russians in Los Angeles There are approximately 3750 Russians in Los Angeles. Of this number, about 100 are Pravloslavni, or followers of the true faith. They are nominally members of the Greek-Catholic Church in Russia, but actually, many are now free-thinkers. They are sometimes referred to in Los Angeles as non-sectarians. The remaining 3650 Russians in this city are sectarians. Because they constitute 97 percent, of the Russian population of Los Angeles, they will be given the chief place in this monograph. It may be noted in passing that no Russian Jews are included. Only persons who belong to the Russian division of the Slavic race are discussed. Of the sectarians, 3300 are Molokans (milkdrinkers), 50 are Dukhobors (evil spirit fighters), and 250 are Subotniks (Judaized Russians). The Molokans, in turn, are composed of Priguni (jumpers) and Postoyani (steady) in the proportion of 3100 to 200. The first group of Molokans, who came here in 1905, settled around Bethlehem Institute on Vignes Street. When others came, a few bought homes along Clarence and Utah Streets. Then the settlement grew in the district situated between Boyle Avenue on the east and the Los Angeles River on the west, and between Aliso Street on the north and Seventh Street on the south. Recently there has been a new settlement made along what is known as Salt Lake Terrace several blocks east of the larger colony. On that street are located many of the somewhat better homes. In a hollow south of Stephenson Avenue and east of Mott Street, there is a group of about sixty houses occupied by Russians only. Book excerpt: From an exciting new voice in historical fiction, an assured debut that should appeal to readers of Away by Amy Bloom or Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. The Little Russian tells the story of Berta Alshonsky, who revels in childhood memories of her time spent with a wealthy family in Moscow—a life filled with salons, balls and all the trappings of the upper class—very different from her current life as a grocer's daughter in the Jewish townlet of Mosny. So when a mysterious and cultured wheat merchant walks into the grocery, Berta's life is forever altered. She falls in love, unaware that he is a member of the Bund, The Jewish Worker's League, smuggling arms to the shtetls to defend them against the pogroms sweeping the Little Russian countryside. Married and established in the wheat center of Cherkast, Berta has recaptured the life she once had in Moscow. So when a smuggling operation goes awry and her husband must flee the country, Berta makes the vain and foolish choice to stay behind with her children and her finery. As Russia plunges into war, Berta eventually loses everything and must find a new way to sustain the lives and safety of her children. Filled with heart–stopping action, richly drawn characters, and a world seeped in war and violence; The Little Russian is poised to capture readers as one of the hand–selling gems of the season.

Book excerpt: "The Imperial Wife is a smart, engaging novel that parallels two fascinating worlds and two singular women. Irina Reyn writes beautifully of immigrants, art and the vagaries of love". --Jess Walter, National Book Award finalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, Beautiful Ruins Two women's lives collide when a priceless Russian artifact comes to light. Tanya Kagan, a rising specialist in Russian art at a top New York auction house, is trying to entice Russia's wealthy oligarchs to bid on the biggest sale of her career, The Order of Saint Catherine, while making sense of the sudden and unexplained departure of her husband. As questions arise over the provenance of the Order and auction fever kicks in, Reyn takes us into the world of Catherine the Great, the infamous 18th-century empress who may have owned the priceless artifact, and who it turns out faced many of the same issues Tanya wrestles with in her own life. Suspenseful and beautifully written, The Imperial Wife asks whether we view female ambition any differently today than we did in the past. Can a contemporary marriage withstand an “Imperial Wife”?
