Book excerpt: Conceive the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sentimentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness.

Book A Collection of Short Stories

Download or read book A Collection of Short Stories written by Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol and published by . This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) was a Russian writer of Ukrainian ethnicity and birth. Often called the father of modern Russian realism, he was one of the first Russian authors to criticize his country s way of life. Although his early works were heavily influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, he wrote in Russian and his works belong to the tradition of Russian literature. Gogol was one of the first masters of short prose, alongside Pushkin, Merimee, Hoffmann, and Hawthorne. The main and most persistent characteristic of Gogol s style is its verbal expressiveness. He wrote with a view not so much to the acoustic effect on the ears of the listener as to the sensuous effect on the vocal apparatus of the reciter. The other main characteristic of his genius is the extraordinary intensity and vividness of impressionist vision, sometimes skirting expressionism. The Dead Souls (1842), The Inspector-General and The Overcoat (1842) are among his masterpieces.

Book Odessa Stories

Download or read book Odessa Stories written by Isaac Babel and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of “electric, heroically wrought” Russian short stories of violence, crime, and sex set in Ukraine—for fans of hard-boiled fiction by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett (John Updike) Odessa was a uniquely Jewish city, and the stories of Isaac Babel—a Jewish man, writing in Russian and born in Odessa—uncover its tough underbelly around the time of the Russian Revolution. Gangsters, prostitutes, beggars, smugglers: no one escapes the pungent, sinewy force of Babel’s pen. From the tales of the magnetic cruelty of Benya Krik—infamous mob boss, and one of the great anti-heroes of Russian literature—to the devastating semi-autobiographical account of a young Jewish boy caught up in a pogrom, this collection of stories is considered one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century Russian literature. Translated with precision and sensitivity by Boris Dralyuk, whose rendering of the rich Odessan argot is pitch-perfect, Odessa Stories is the first ever stand-alone collection of Babel’s narratives set in the city and includes the original stories as well as later tales. “The salty speech of the city’s inhabitants is wonderfully rendered in a new translation by Boris Dralyuk . . . Hard-boiled language reminiscent of Dashiell Hammett.” —Vice

This title was originally published as part of a larger collection that also includes volumes featuring classic short stories from Italy, France, Scandinavia, and Germany. Volume One includes sixteen short stories by fourteen different authors. Included in this collection are works from some of Russian literature's most prominent figures, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy. These stories are the highlight of the collection, but certainly not the only works of value. Stories by Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Maxim Gorki, and Eugene Chirikov make this a well-rounded collection that includes authors from various time periods and who write in dramatically different styles. Editor William Patten has done a wonderful job selecting the texts to be included in this collection. There are comedies, tragedies, mysteries, and romances, and the editor has managed to construct an excellent survey of popular Russian literature. While these are short stories, these are not readings intended for a young audience. Many of the works are challenging, and some deal with fairly mature subject matter. The stories included in this collection would certainly be best appreciated by mature readers, and in particular those fond of Russian literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories (1917) is a collection of nine stories by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Recognized today as foundational for the development of the modern short story, Anton Chekhov has transcended Russian literature to become one of the most popular and acclaimed authors in history, in any language. This collection includes “The Lady with the Dog,” a meditative tale of forbidden desire and the frailty of hope described by Vladimir Nabokov as “one of the greatest stories ever written” despite breaking “[a]ll the traditional rules” of storytelling. The title story of the collection follows Dmitri Gurov, a married middle-aged man who falls in love with a young newlywed while on vacation in Yalta. The woman he desires, Anna Sergeyevna, is also unhappy with her marriage, and soon the two spend their days together before Anna decides to go home to her husband. Back in Moscow, Gurov—a man who has had many affairs—finds himself unable to shake the memory of Anna, and longs for the chance to see her once more. In “A Doctor’s Visit,” a young doctor named Korlyov journeys to the home of a recently deceased industrialist, where he has been called to care for the frail heiress Liza. There, he finds himself beset with dark thoughts and even darker visions, and soon discovers that the cure for Liza’s illness may be far beyond his skill. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anton Chekhov’s The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories

Download or read book The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories written by Ivan A. Bunin and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories (1922) is a collection of short stories by Russian author and Nobel laureate Ivan Bunin. Published in Russian in 1915, The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories was first translated to English in 1922 by D.H. Lawrence, Leonard Woolf, and Samuil Koteliansky, and was published by Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s storied Hogarth Press. The title story, translated by Lawrence and Koteliansky, is among Bunin’s most famous works and was considered upon publication to be the finest work of Russian literature since the deaths of Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy. “The Gentleman from San Francisco” is the story of an American millionaire who travels to Italy while on a lengthy vacation with his wife and daughter. Disappointed with the weather in Naples, as well as with the rundown state of the city, the family journeys to the island of Capri where, in the lobby of their luxury hotel, the man dies. The remainder of the story captures the reaction of the hotel’s wealthy clientele, as well as the indifference and hostility with which the staff treat the gentleman’s body. Noted for its cold, critical tone, as well as its subtle critique of wealth and American exceptionalism, “The Gentleman from San Francisco” is a masterpiece of Russian literature and an essential work of short fiction. Included in this collection are the stories “Gentle Breathing,” “Kasimir Stanislavovitch,” and “Son,” all of which capture the breadth and intricacy of Bunin’s literary style. The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories is a compact and compelling collection of stories from one of Russia’s greatest writers, translated by two of the most important figures in early twentieth century English literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Ivan Bunin’s The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.
