Book The Russian Influence on English Education

Download or read book The Russian Influence on English Education written by W. H. G. Armytage and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969. British merchants first penetrated to Moscow in the early 16th century. From that time until today developments in Russia have influenced Britain in innumerable ways - sometimes unexpectedly. In this volume Professor Armytage traces this influence, showing how Tolstoy, Kropotkin and others better known for their activities in fields other than education, have, in fact, had their effect on education in Britain. The lively account of the way in which these ideas have found their way into the British system shows that recent influences have been more direct. In particular the rapid development of higher technological education owes a great deal to the Russian example.

Book The European Administrative Elite

Download or read book The European Administrative Elite written by John Alexander Armstrong and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there have been other studies of elite administrators in France, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia, John Armstrong has made the first systematic comparison of their roles, especially their inclination to participate in economic development. Drawing on role theory and theories of socialization and recruitment, he analyzes the influences that family, secondary school, specialized university instruction, and in-service experiences have had on administrators. Currents of ideas, class concepts of appropriate role behavior, and organizational peculiarities are also examined as possible influences. By exploring this subject over a long period—in some cases reaching as far back as the seventeenth century—this book shows how changing definitions of administrators' roles reflect their position in society and permit the exploration of changing socialization processes. The long time span also shows how factors such as administrative intervention can change from being marginally important to crucial in affecting economic growth. From the diverse European experience the author distills five factors which he hypothesizes have exerted a constant positive influence on administrative intervention in economic development, and suggests how these factors might be applied in analysis of other societies. He also provides a wealth of statistical data and an extensive bibliography. Originally published in 1973. The flow of students to universities is no longer unidirectional from East to West but truly global with a diminishing difference between the two major educational centers. Slethaug and Vinther explain how liberal education, the movement of students across the globe, autonomy for students and teachers, and internationalization of education influence each other in constructing a new educational reality. These elements are vital to the continued development of learning, economic growth, and the democratic process of our societies in the East and West.

Book excerpt: During the current conflict between Russia and the West, there are many concerns associated with the fate of the Russian language and spread of the English language. Previous research has shown a serious concern about the use of English language in the education system in Russia. Therefore, it is necessary to search the conception of using the English language, which will be adequate to the outlook of the Russians. The present study aims to investigate social and ideological barriers of implementation of bilingual education (in English and Russian) in St. Petersburg universities and to find a way of possible development bilingual education in future. The author conducts the expert research by formalized interviews. The sampling method: convenience sample. The results: despite the fact that the experts recognize that knowledge of English is useful in worldwide perspectives, the spread of the English language as a language of instruction at Russian universities is alarming. Education in only English without Russian is unacceptable. The Russian language should have priority in Russian university education; however, English can be one of working languages especially if it is possible to understand it as a financial investment and it will be proved that English can give financial profit. The results show a wide range of barriers, from concern for the preservation of national identity to fears that social change will occur more rapidly and existing knowledge can be devalued under the influence of English spread. However, economic motivation is very important and English can be accepted as a way to economic success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom and Empire tells the story of the politics of alphabets, languages, and schooling in the eastern empire of Russia from 1860 to 1917. Wayne Dowler presents an intriguing cast of characters, including Nikolai Il'minskii, whose method of schooling non-Russian children lay at the heart of nationalist controversy; Ismail Bey Gaspirali, whose new method schools attempted to reconcile Islam with modern secular philosophy and science; Konstantin Pobedonostsev, procurator of the Holy Synod and éminence grise of the reigns of Alexander III and his son Nicholas II; and Sophia Chicherina, feisty defender of the Il'minskii school. Dowler shows us that the problem of schooling non-Russians was unresolved by the fall of the Romanovs in 1917, smouldered through much of the Soviet period, and has re-emerged today as a major source of divisiveness in the Russian Federation.
