Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A lucid, intelligent page-turner” (Los Angeles Times) that challenges long-held assumptions about Jesus, from the host of Believer Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the “Kingdom of God.” The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his death, his followers would call him God. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most enigmatic figures by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived. Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction. He explores the reasons the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus’ life and mission. Praise for Zealot “Riveting . . . Aslan synthesizes Scripture and scholarship to create an original account.”—The New Yorker “Fascinatingly and convincingly drawn . . . Aslan may come as close as one can to respecting those who revere Jesus as the peace-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, true son of God depicted in modern Christianity, even as he knocks down that image.”—The Seattle Times “[Aslan’s] literary talent is as essential to the effect of Zealot as are his scholarly and journalistic chops. . . . A vivid, persuasive portrait.”—Salon “This tough-minded, deeply political book does full justice to the real Jesus, and honors him in the process.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A special and revealing work, one that believer and skeptic alike will find surprising, engaging, and original.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power “Compulsively readable . . . This superb work is highly recommended.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this four volume series, Hijacked!: How Dr. King's Dream Became a Nightmare, author Clarence Washington Sr. dissects Dr. Martin Luther King's dream and explores how our failure to adhere to its principles has allowed the dream to be hijacked and turned to a nightmare—and it's time to wake up. In the second volume of the Hijacked! collection, The Hijack, the author analyzes the various methods by which Dr. King's dream is being hijacked and demonstrates the fruitless, negative results that such methods are destined to impart to individual Americans and the nation as a whole. This volume uncovers hidden agendas of the disciples of Saul Alinsky's rules for radicals, the disciples of James Cone's Black liberation theology, and the hidden agendas of other leftists and progressive elitists in America. The author reveals how their philosophically, biblically, and historically errant ideologies have pervaded the minds of desperate people of meager means, the softminded, and the easily deceived in our nation with belief systems that have enslaved instead of freeing them. For the full dissection of Dr. King's dream and how our failure to adhere to its principles has led to a nightmare, explore the other volumes in Hijacked!: How Dr. King's Dream Became a Nightmare. Other volumes in this series focus on the dream, the nightmare, and how we can recover.

Book Prophecies Visions Occurrences and Dreams

Download or read book Prophecies Visions Occurrences and Dreams written by Raymond Aguilera and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-06-15 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophecies, Visions, Occurrences and Dreams is an apocalyptic book. Since 1990, Raymond Aguilera began to receive prophecies, visions and warnings from God about the end of our world as we know it. These messages range from abortion, to the New Age movement, to Pastors who have misled the flock. They reveal things to come, things that now are and things that should not be... From hope, to love, to doom, to a new beginning, herein lies a broad range of insight from a whole new perspective. The prophecies are simple and straight forward, written from a first-hand perspective. They fly in the face of orthodox tradition and are a thorn in the side to everyone who has already made up his mind and heart on how the end is to come and who God is. This has the potential of being one of the most controversial books of the year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone supposed that Jesus, the man from Nazareth, was the son of Mary and Joseph the carpenter. But who was He really? The debate over Jesus’ identity has continued for two thousand years. Was Jesus actually God or was He simply a man with an unusual teaching gift? Did He possess a divine nature that equipped Him to perform miracles, or were His miracles a slight of hand? Could He have actually been the incarnation of Jehovah? His conversations prove that Jesus of Nazareth knew that He was God in human form. The four Gospels record over sixty different conversations that Jesus Christ had with many different people in many different settings. His conversations consistently pointed to the truth that He was indeed, God in the flesh. When Peter looked at this man who was very much like himself and concluded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” he was exactly right. The plethora of modern theories denying Christ’s divinity must be abandoned when we comprehend what He revealed about Himself through His conversations.

Book Bourdieu in Africa

Download or read book Bourdieu in Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bourdieu in Africa: Exploring the Dynamics of Religious Fields offers a view of religions as social games played by interested actors. Analyzing practices as strategic moves, this critical approach conceptualizes the religious field as relations of exchange and competition between experts and laity, and explores how the actors’ habitus, including religious beliefs, serve to misrecognize and thus legitimize relations of power within the religious sphere and beyond. The authors discuss the volatile religious fields of Nigeria, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and South Africa, with their variably configured tensions between African traditions, Christianity and Islam, but also consider the interrelations of religion with other social fields, with politics, economy, education and law. Contributors are: Ulrich Berner, Chikas Danfulani, Jonathan Draper, Magnus Echtler, Gemechu Jemal Geda, Magnus Treiber, Asonzeh Ukah, Dale Wallace, Halkano Abdi Wario.

Book Archaeology of Jesus Nazareth

Download or read book Archaeology of Jesus Nazareth written by Ken Dark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology of Jesus' Nazareth is the first book on the archaeology of first-century Nazareth: Jesus' hometown in Galilee. Requiring no previous knowledge of biblical history or archaeology, it outlines the latest archaeological evidence, placing the Gospels' account of Jesus' youth in the Bible, and origins of Christian pilgrimage, in a new context. The book concentrates on the fascinating Sisters of Nazareth site in the centre of the present city. There, twenty-first century archaeological research identified a Byzantine pilgrimage church, which is likely to be the Church of the Nutrition - dedicated to the upbringing of Christ - the most important previously 'lost' early Christian church in the Holy Land. A seventh-century pilgrim said that a vaulted area under the Church of the Nutrition contained the actual house where Jesus was brought up by Mary and Joseph. Intriguingly, below the Byzantine church at the Sisters of Nazareth site a vaulted area preserved what are probably the ruins of a first-century house. Even before the Byzantine church was built, a - probably fourth-century - cave-church was constructed next to the first-century ruins, suggesting that they were assigned Christian religious importance. The similarities with the pilgrim's description raise the question of whether the Sisters of Nazareth house really could have been the childhood home of Jesus. The book draws to its conclusion by means of a discussion of this historical existence for Jesus and the implications of the archaeology of Nazareth for understanding the Gospels.
