Book The 1914 Star to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines

Download or read book The 1914 Star to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines written by WH Fevyer and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Navy's entitlement to the 1914 Star was almost exclusively restricted to the RN Division though personnel from a few other minor units - including, for example, Sick Berth staff from HMS Pembroke - also qualified. To qualify one had to have served in France/Belgium between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. This splendid work of research lists all those who were entitled to the Star, battalion by battalion, unit by unit. There is an excellent introduction giving the background to the formation of the RN Division and some of the arguments about RN entitlement to the star (the Admiralty was initially against it), and at the end there is a section devoted to the `story' of the Star from the Navy's viewpoint based on selected extracts from the Admiralty case file. Here we can read correspondence between the King, Admiralty and the War Office, Fleet and Army Orders and Press releases. A fascinating document which shows there is more to it than meets the eye in the creation of a campaign medal.

Book The Convict and the Soldier

Download or read book The Convict and the Soldier written by John P F Lynch and published by Sid Harta Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael, convicted of a minor crime, is sent to Van Diemen's Land to serve his sentence; John (the soldier) is involved in a minor scandal that means he must resign his commission. He decides to pursue a new military career in the Colonies. Paths cross, families join and hardships are overcome. This is a story of courage, seized opportunities and new beginnings. This novel is an insight into the life and times of an Irish convict and English soldier during the 1850s. The reader journeys with them from Ireland's County Clare and Cumberland in England, to the Australian Colonies of Van Diemen's Land with its penal system and finally to the Victorian bushlands. Generally historically and geographically accurate, John Lynch has lived up to his previous local history publications, by weaving true tales within these pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occupation of San Juan Island by the Royal Marines between 1860 and 1872 marked the last time "redcoats" would be stationed in lands south of the 49th parallel. Following the nearly disastrous "Pig War" crisis, their primary mission with their U.S. Army counterparts was keeping the peace on an island considered ripe for the taking by Britons and Americans alike. Drawing on historical, archaeological and photographic research, Outpost of Empire offers an intriguing glimpse of a frontier garrison in the Victorian age. Mike Vouri is the San Juan National Park historian and author of The Pig War.

  • Author : Andrew Lambert
  • Publisher : Faber & Faber

Download or read book The Challenge written by Andrew Lambert and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1812 Britain stood alone, fighting for her very survival against a vast European Empire. Only the Royal Navy stood between Napoleon's legions and ultimate victory. In that dark hour America saw its chance to challenge British dominance: her troops invaded Canada and American frigates attacked British merchant shipping, the lifeblood of British defence. War polarised America. The south and west wanted land, the north wanted peace and trade. But America had to choose between the oceans and the continent. Within weeks the land invasion had stalled, but American warships and privateers did rather better, and astonished the world by besting the Royal Navy in a series of battles. Then in three titanic single ship actions the challenge was decisively met. British frigates closed with the Chesapeake, the Essex and the President, flagship of American naval ambition. Both sides found new heroes but none could equal Captain Philip Broke, champion of history's greatest frigate battle, when HMS Shannon captured the USS Chesapeake in thirteen blood-soaked minutes. Broke's victory secured British control of the Atlantic, and within a year Washington, D.C. had been taken and burnt by British troops. Andrew Lambert, Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, brings all his mastery of the subject and narrative brilliance to throw new light on a war which until now has been much mythologised, little understood.
