Download or read book The Indian Ideology written by Perry Anderson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the Indian state claims to possess a harmonious territorial unity, to embody the values of a stable political democracy, and to adhere to a steadfast religious impartiality. Even many of those critical of the inequalities of Indian society still underwrite such claims. But does the “idea of India” correspond to the realities of the Union? The Indian Ideology suggests that the roots of the republic’s current ills go very deep, historically. They lie, it argues, in the way the struggle for independence culminated in the transfer of power from British rule to Congress in a divided subcontinent, not least in the roles played by Gandhi, as the great architect of the movement, and Nehru, as his appointed successor, in the catastrophe of partition. Only an honest reckoning with that disaster, Perry Anderson argues, offers an understanding of what was has gone wrong since independence. Revisiting a century’s history, and sifting the uncomfortable realities from the ideology, Anderson offers an alternative way to look at the story of the nation, and the nature of a state that is less in conflict with caste than built upon it.
Download or read book Insects of Hawaii vol 17 written by Howell V. Daly and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Insects of Hawaii is a systematic treatment of the native bees of the Hawaiian Islands. Believed to be descendants of a single female that arrived in the ancient archipelago millions of years ago, the native yellow-faced bees are prime examples of extraordinary evolutionary radiation. Despite their evolutionary and ecological importance, no comprehensive work has been published on them until now. A total of fifty-nine species are recognized, including nine new species. Detailed keys for the identification of species are provided for males and, for the first time, females. The history of collections of the bees, their taxonomy, attributes for dispersal, biology, ecology, and relations to flower plants are discussed. Treatments of each species include annotated synonymy and other references; diagnosis of identifying features and general distribution; description of male and female; localities where first collected and recent collections; flower records; and remarks on taxonomic problems and other information. Line drawings of the male head and genitalia are included to facilitate identification, and all recent collection records are provided in an appendix. 67 illus.

Download or read book Flying Adventurers written by David K. Vaughan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation books were a unique and prolific subgenre of American juvenile literature from the early to mid-20th century, drawing upon the nation's intensifying interest. The first books of this type, Harry L. Sayler's series Airship Boys, appeared shortly after the Wright brothers' first successful flight in 1909. Following Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic, popular series like Ted Scott and Andy Lane established the "golden age" of juvenile aviation literature. This work examines the 375 juvenile aviation series titles published between 1909 and 1964. It weaves together several thematic threads, including the placement of aviation narratives within the context of major historical events, the technical accuracy in depictions of flying machines and the ways in which characters reflected the culture of their eras. Three appendices provide publication data for each series, a list of referenced aircraft and an annotated bibliography; there is a full index.

Book excerpt: World War II Correspondence of Dean Daniel B. Jett. Daniel B. Jett, the Dean of Engineering from 1938 to 1947 at what was known then as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later NMSU), carried on a personal correspondence with hundreds of his former students during World War II. Known affectionately as Dad Jett, Dean Jett was beloved by his students. During the war years, Jett composed class newsletters and wrote scores of letters to each of the men and women of the School of Engineering who served overseas or stateside. His tireless energy and enthusiasm boosted morale among those serving as soldiers or nurses, as well as those at home fighting to keep the school on an even keel during hard times. Jett's students wrote to him as well. These letters provide indelible insights into the lives of young men and women involved in cataclysmic world events. The letters reveal a nostalgia for the college, infused with hope for returning to the school when the war ended. A graduate of Wellesley College, Martha Shipman Andrews received her Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is presently University Archivist and assistant professor at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces. Richard Melzer is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico's Valencia Campus. A specialist in 20th century New Mexico history, he has written ten books and over a hundred articles about the Southwest. He is currently the president of the Historical Society of New Mexico.
