Book excerpt: "Very short, highly anecdotal memoir of a machine gun officer's WWI adventures in France, the Balkans, and finally with Allenby across Arabia. Many of the anecdotes are entertaining, even moving. This book does a decent job reminding us that Allenby's army did most of the heavy lifting, while the threat of Lawrence's band on the flanks or cutting down a column on the move made the Turks quick to retreat rather than get boxed in at the end of the campaign. One is left wondering how many men from Gilbert's unit survived the whole war, first in the trenches of France, a few months of combat near Salonika, and finally enduring the very harsh conditions and lack of supply in the Middle East." --

Book excerpt: Don Juan of Austria, one of history’s most triumphant and inspiring heroes, is reborn in this opulent novel by Louis de Wohl. Because of the circumstances of his birth, this last son of Emperor Charles the Fifth spent his childhood in a Spanish peasant’s hut. Acknowledged by King Philip as his half-brother, the attractive youth quickly became a central figure in a Court where intrigues and romances abounded. Don Juan’s intelligence, kindness and devout attachment to the Church enabled him to live in an environment of unscathed luxury, violence and treachery. De Wohl paints in brilliant color scenes at the Court of King Philip, Juan’s campaign against barbaric Moriscos in Andalusia and the climatic victory at Lepanto where he saved the Christian world from Islamic dominance. The Last Crusader abounds in vivid scenes and characters. Who can forget the sadisitic nature of the Prince of Asturias, the spirituality of Fray Juan de Calahorra, the scheming of beautiful Princess Ana of Eboli, the barbaric siege of Malta, or Emperor Charles the Fifth waiting for death, in his stygian throne room? Here is a novel of high adventure which brings to life the turbulence of the sixteenth century with its extremities of the wickedness and piety, its sins of pride and conquest, its seething heresies. With his strong talent for exciting historical narrative, Louis de Wohl adds another great dynamic novel to his already lustrous career.

Download or read book The Romance of the Last Crusade written by Vivian Gilbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Last Crusade: With Allenby to Jerusalem By a chance most fortunate I heard Major Vivian Gilbert tell the story which he has written here. When it was done, I was astonished to find that he had been talking for an hour; time had been quite forgotten, and I was ready to listen to him for as much longer as he might have been willing to speak. So have I, by certain firesides, sat enthralled while others from the Somme, or the Argonne, or Mesopotamia, made us forget time while they forgot themselves in narrating what they had seen and done; but this was in privacy: none have I heard who could hold an audience in public with a war tale as Major Gilbert did. Such tales Should be told and should be set down. They serve to remind us of the greatness in man at a time when his littleness seems chiefly to the fore. They will serve the future, too, as documents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the uses of crusader medievalism – the memory of the crusades and crusading rhetoric and imagery – in Britain, from Walter Scott’s The Talisman (1825) to the end of the Second World War. It seeks to understand why and when the crusades and crusading were popular, how they fitted with other cultural trends of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, how their use was affected by the turmoil of the First World War and whether they were differently employed in the interwar years and in the 1939-45 conflict. Building on existing studies and contributing the fruits of fresh research, it brings together examples of the uses of the crusades from disparate contexts and integrates them into the story of the rise and fall crusader medievalism in Britain.

Book The Holy Land in English Culture 1799 1917

Download or read book The Holy Land in English Culture 1799 1917 written by Eitan Bar-Yosef and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dream of building Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land has long been a quintessential part of English identity and culture: but how did this vision shape the Victorian encounter with the actual Jerusalem in the Middle East? The Holy Land in English Culture 1799-1917 offers a new cultural history of the English fascination with Palestine in the long nineteenth century, from Napoleon's failed Mediterranean campaign of 1799, which marked a new era in the British involvement in the land, to Allenby's conquest of Jerusalem in 1917. Bar-Yosef argues that the Protestant tradition of internalizing Biblical vocabulary - 'Promised Land', 'Chosen People', 'Jerusalem' - and applying it to different, often contesting, visions of England and Englishness evoked a unique sense of ambivalence towards the imperial desire to possess the Holy Land. Popular religious culture, in other words, was crucial to the construction of the orientalist discourse: so crucial, in fact, that metaphorical appropriations of the 'Holy Land' played a much more dominant role in the English cultural imagination than the actual Holy Land itself. As it traces the diversity of 'Holy Lands' in the Victorian cultural landscape - literal and metaphorical, secular and sacred, radical and patriotic, visual and textual - this study joins the ongoing debate about the dissemination of imperial ideology. Drawing on a wide array of sources, from Sunday-school textbooks and popular exhibitions to penny magazines and soldiers' diaries, the book demonstrates how the Orientalist discourse functions - or, to be more precise, malfunctions - in those popular cultural spheres that are so markedly absent from Edward Said's work: it is only by exploring sources that go beyond the highbrow, the academic, or the official, that we can begin to grasp the limited currency of the orientalist discourse in the metropolitan centre, and the different meanings it could hold for different social groups. As such, The Holy Land in English Culture 1799-1917 provides a significant contribution to both postcolonial studies and English social history.
