When it came to suppressing counterinsurgencies, or deterring the depredations of bandits, the army frequently deployed small groups of infantry and cavalry based in fortlets. This remarkable installation type has never previously been studied in detail, and shows a new side to the Roman army. Rather than displaying the aggressive uniformity for which the Roman military is famous, individual fortlets were usually bespoke installations tailored to local needs. The six lectures of which the course consisted were delivered in the spring of 1910. They form the main strand in the thread of the following chapters, and it is accord ingly the requirements of the ordinary cultivated reader, rather than those of the specialist, that have deter mined the plan of the volume and also the method of treatment. I am hopeful, however, that even the specialist will not be sent empty away. At all events, I have endeavoured to be thorough where thoroughness seemed desirable.
