Book excerpt: Carlisle charts the city's emergence as an urban centre under the Romans and traces its vicissitudes over subsequent centuries until the high Middle Ages. Arguably, the most important theme that differentiates its development from many other towns is its position as a 'border' city. The characteristics of the landscape surrounding Carlisle gave it special significance as a front-line element in the defence of the Roman province of Britannia and later at the frontier of two emerging kingdoms, England and Scotland. In both cases, it occupied the only overland route in the west between these two kingdoms, emphasising the importance of understanding its landscape setting. This volume sheds light on the processes of urbanization under the Romans beginning with a fort, developing into a major nodal hub, and ending as the capital city of the local tribe, the Carvetii. The story continues with the collapse of Roman rule and the city’s re-emergence first as a monastic centre, then as a proto-town in the period of Anglo-Scandinavian settlement. Finally, the Norman Conquest confirmed Carlisle’s importance with the establishment of a castle, a diocese, and an Augustinian Priory, as well as the granting of specific rights to the citizens. Carlisle uses a combination of archaeological discoveries and historical data to explore the history and legacy of this fascinating city.

Download or read book The Roman Survey of Britain written by Michael J. Ferrar and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the Romans survey the lands that they conquered? This study puts forward evidence in support of the idea that geometric patterns can be discerned in the angles of road alignments and the position of forts and towns to suggest that the Romans surveyed Britain shortly after the invasion. With lots of maps and diagrams, Ferrar and Richardson combine cartography, history and mathematics to argue for the use of surveying and centuration in Britain, going on to suggest how and why this was carried out. Detailed examinations of the geometric landscape of The Mickle Ditch in Manchester, and of the Antonine and Hadrian's Wall are included.

Download or read book The Roman Wall Illustrations written by Rev. John Collingwood Bruce and published by JOHN RUSSELL SMITH. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous Roman Wall, which, in former times, protected southern Britain from the ravages of the northern tribes, exhibits, at this day, remains more entire, and forms a subject of study more interesting than is generally supposed. Two authors of great learning have treated of this renowned structure—Horsley, in the Britannia Romana, and Hodgson, in the last volume of his History of Northumberland. Both are treatises of considerable size, and both are, to a certain extent, rare. The Britannia Romana, moreover, describes the Wall, not as it is, but as it was more than a century ago. Hodgson’s work is of recent date, and forms a valuable storehouse of nearly all that is known upon the subject. The mind, however, of that amiable man and zealous antiquary was, at the time of its preparation, bending under the weight of his ill-requited labours, and he has failed to present his ample materials to the reader in that condensed and well-arranged form which distinguishes his previous volumes, and without which a book on antiquities will not arrest the attention of the general reader. The following work may be regarded as introductory to the elaborate productions of Horsley and Hodgson. The reader is not assumed to be acquainted with the technicalities of archæology; and, at each advancing step the information is supplied which may render his course easy. I have not attempted, in the last part of the work, to enumerate all the altars and inscribed stones which have been found upon the line of the Wall, but have made a selection of those which are most likely to interest the general reader, and to give him a correct idea of the nature and value of these remains. In the body of the work I have endeavoured to furnish a correct delineation of the present condition of the Wall and its outworks. All my descriptions are the result of personal observation. To secure as great accuracy as possible, I have read over many of my proof sheets on the spot which they describe. The pictorial illustrations have been prepared with care, and will give the reader, who is not disposed to traverse the ground, a correct idea of the state of the Barrier. The wood-cuts and plates, illustrative of the antiquities found on the line, have, with the exception of a few coins introduced into the first Part of the volume, and copied from the Monumenta Historica, been prepared from original drawings, taken for this work from the objects themselves. I am not without hope that the well-read antiquary will value these delineations for their beauty and accuracy. To be continue in this ebook...

Download or read book Theoretical Aspects of Roman Camp and Fort Design written by Alan Richardson and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2004 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising a rectangular enclosure bounded by a rampart and ditch, the Roman camp displayed the skills of the Roman military engineers in assessing and deploying human and other resources. This study of Roman camps, forts, fortlets and legionary fortresses examines the logistics and ergonomics of their construction, from surveying the landscape and siting the camp, to calculating its dimensions and the manpower required. Information from ancient sources, such as Polybius, Josephus and Hyginus, is used for some of the calculations and examples from Britain, including the forts along Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, are cited. The quantity of numbers and tables in this volume should not put you off; it is an accessible and interesting study of how Roman Republican and imperial armies fortified their enclaves in the field.
