Book The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools Classic Reprint written by Edwin D. Mead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools The address upon The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, which has the first place in the following pages, was delivered in connection with the now somewhat famous text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888, and was published at that time in pamphlet form. The address upon the question, Has the Parochial School Proper Place in America? Was given before the National Educational Association, at Nashville, in July last. The writer declined the invitations for its publication at the time, as it was his desire to expand and strengthen that portion of the address devoted to the subject of moral training in the public schools. The leisure for this revision has never come, and the address is given here almost untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Detroit Gesu Catholic Church and School

Download or read book Detroit Gesu Catholic Church and School written by Patricia Montemurri and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a reconfigured farmhouse just a mile outside of the city limits of Detroit, a Jesuit priest and 25 men, women, and children gathered to celebrate Sunday mass on March 19, 1922. The Reverend John McNichols named the Catholic mission church Gesu, the Italian word for "Jesus." Gesu became one of Detroit's landmark parishes. Its history illustrates the Motor City's boom, bust, resilience, and resurgence. It was the home parish of four Detroit mayors, powerful members of Congress, auto industry titans, sports legends, artists, authors, and actors. At its peak in the mid-1960s, Gesu School enrolled 1,600 students. Because of Detroit's decline and its racial and economic struggles, Gesu is one of only four Catholic elementary schools that remain in the city. But as Detroit rebounds, Gesu School is growing again.

Download or read book Catholic High Schools written by James L. Heft S. M. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholic high schools in the United States have been undergoing three major changes: the shift to primarily lay leadership and teachers; the transition to a more consumerist and pluralist culture; and the increasing diversity of students attending Catholic high schools. James Heft argues that to navigate these changes successfully, leaders of Catholic education need to inform lay teachers more thoroughly, conduct a more profound social analysis of the culture, and address the real needs of students. After presenting the history of Catholic schools in the United States and describing the major legal decisions that have influenced their evolution, Heft describes the distinctive and compelling mission of a Catholic high school. Two chapters are devoted to leadership, and other chapters to teachers, students, alternative models of high schools, financing, and the key role of parents, who today may be described as ''post-deferential'' to traditional authorities, including bishops and priests. Written by an award-winning teacher, scholar, and recognized educational leader in Catholic education, Catholic High Schools should be read by everyone interested in religiously- affiliated educational institutions, particularly Catholic education.

Download or read book Between Church and State written by James W. Fraser and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2000-09-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the ongoing battle between religion and public education is once again a burning issue in the United States. Prayer in the classroom, the teaching of creationism, the representation of sexuality in the classroom, and the teaching of morals are just a few of the subjects over which these institutions are skirmishing. James Fraser shows that though these battles have been going on for as long as there have been public schools, there has never been any consensus about the proper relationship between religion and public education. Looking at the most difficult question of how private issues of faith can be reconciled with the very public nature of schooling, Fraser paints a picture of our multicultural society that takes our relationship with God into account.

Book Lost Classroom Lost Community

Download or read book Lost Classroom Lost Community written by Margaret F. Brinig and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades in the United States, more than 1,600 Catholic elementary and secondary schools have closed, and more than 4,500 charter schools—public schools that are often privately operated and freed from certain regulations—have opened, many in urban areas. With a particular emphasis on Catholic school closures, Lost Classroom, Lost Community examines the implications of these dramatic shifts in the urban educational landscape. More than just educational institutions, Catholic schools promote the development of social capital—the social networks and mutual trust that form the foundation of safe and cohesive communities. Drawing on data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods and crime reports collected at the police beat or census tract level in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, Margaret F. Brinig and Nicole Stelle Garnett demonstrate that the loss of Catholic schools triggers disorder, crime, and an overall decline in community cohesiveness, and suggest that new charter schools fail to fill the gaps left behind. This book shows that the closing of Catholic schools harms the very communities they were created to bring together and serve, and it will have vital implications for both education and policing policy debates.
