This book was released on 2019-07-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the 3rd Indonesian Textile Conference (ITC) 2019. It is our great honor and pleasure to have you all here today. Indonesian Textile Conference is by far the only scientific event in the field of textiles in Indonesia aimed to bring together leading researchers, experts, students and people from the industry to share their knowledge and exchange scientific ideas. Indonesia is one of the leading textile exporter countries in the world with a total export value of USD 15.3 billion in 2015 and ranked the third after palm oil and steel (source: Ministry of Industry of Republic of Indonesia). It is one of the ten priority industries and the mainstay of Indonesian national industry. In a global economy and fast changing world, the future of Indonesian textile industry will increasingly depend on the industry’s ability to relentlessly innovate in its products, to use the most advanced, flexible and resource-efficient processes and to focus its organizational structure as well as business operations according to the ever changing and growing needs of its customers. In all that, research and innovation are vital and play an ever increasing role. Indonesian Textile Conference was initiated and is dedicated to promote and bring progress to research and innovation in the field of textile and textile-related subjects in Indonesia. Textile is a rich multidisciplinary area of study and in fact has attracted a great deal of attention and numerous contributions from non-textile scientists. It is not just about clothing. It is all about material and all aspects that are inherent in the process of its production and applications. It covers a whole lot of area which includes but not limited to: advanced material and textile fibers, natural fibers and natural dyes, utilization of natural sources for textiles in general and/or functional textiles, environmental protection and ecological considerations in textile industry, life cycle analysis, clean/green production, best practices in energy efficient processes, bio-based polymer, bioengineering, nanotechnology, textile-based composites, industrial management and engineering, traditional textiles and batik, textile preservation and conservation, and design. Smart, functional and interactive textile is another area of interest which is quite recent and resulted from the convergence of latest developments in material science, physics and chemistry, microelectronics and informatics. Stimuli responsive materials, self-healing polymers, textile energy devices, textile sensor and antenna are only a few examples of development in this area. Recently added to this is a new emerging “fashionable technology”. It is a new concept that brings fashion to the next level by integrating technology and fashion. It looks at the future fashion as intersection of design, fashion, science, and technology beyond wearable technology. Still another important and interesting issue in textile is sustainability, especially due to the stigma associated with the industry as the big polluter and being not environmentally-friendly. Sustainable textiles and clothing involves the choice of materials, technologies and processing methods that ensure environmental and social friendliness and safety to human health throughout the entire life-cycle phases. Thus, there is an ample room for almost everyone to contribute in this conference. On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the management of Politeknik STTT Bandung, have a productive and fruitful conference.

Book Indonesia s Industrial Transformation

Download or read book Indonesia s Industrial Transformation written by Hal Hill and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1997 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, has experienced a remarkable economic transformation over the past 30 years. In the mid 1960s it was one of the poorest countries in the developing world, but by the 1990s it had joined the group of Asian 'tiger' economies. This set of essays examines the record of industrialization, which has been central to Indonesia's rapid development. Successive sections provide an overview of the industrialization process, case studies of selected industries, the contribution of foreign investment and technological development, the role of small-medium industry, and a range of industrial policy issues. Drawing on the country's much improved statistical base, this empirically oriented volume highlights both the achievements of the 'New Order' regime and the many challenges which lie ahead.

Book Managing Restructuring in the Textile and Garment Subsector

Download or read book Managing Restructuring in the Textile and Garment Subsector written by Saha Dhevan Meyanathan and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary edition. The full report analyzes the issues affecting income security for the elderly in both developing and industrial nations. Systems providing financial security for the old are under increasing strain throughout the world. Changing demographics have led to an increased proportion of old people in the general population. Traditional means of support for the old, such as extended families, are weakening. Meanwhile, formal systems, such as government-backed pensions, have proven unstable. For these reasons economists, policymakers, and government officials are exploring ways to address such issues as: *How to ensure financial security for the old and the best ways of paying for such security *The roles of the public and private sectors when systems are used to enhance rather than detract from economic growth. This study, the first comprehensive and global examination of old age security, addresses such issues. It identifies three functions of old age financial security programs--redistribution, saving, and insurance. It evaluates the policy options for meeting these functions using two criteria: their impact on the aged and their impact on the economy as a whole. The study suggests that financial security for the old and economic growth would be better served if governments relied on three systems: 1) A publicly managed system with mandatory participation and the limited goal of reducing poverty among the old 2) A privately managed mandatory savings system 3) A voluntary savings system. These three systems would ensure against the many risks of old age. The study concludes that a combination of different income security policies is more effective than any single approach and that all countries should begin planning for their aging populations now. Book excerpt: Although Chinese and global demand, low commodity prices and rising wages will continue to challenge trade growth in 2016, Indonesia remains on a positive trajectory. Rising domestic demand, increasing liberalization measures, improvements to the investment climate and a shift towards value-added production will bolster both exports and investment. At the same time, new trade agreements with the world's largest economies look set to drive long-term trade expansion. Prudent government policy, an ambitious reform agenda and rising recognition of the role of the private sector should help to keep investment and trade stable in 2016, and despite exports and growth have dipped in recent years, the country is well positioned to make the crucible transformation from a consumption- to investment-based economy.

Book The Indian Textile and Clothing Industry

Download or read book The Indian Textile and Clothing Industry written by Mausumi Kar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the textile and clothing Industry of India and its trade scenario from a global perspective. New developments in international policies related to trade and investment and falling barriers to trade worldwide as well as within individual regional communities have transformed the structure of production and global competition in the textile and apparel industries across the world. Furthermore, with the incorporation of textile trade in the GATT framework following the removal of quantitative restrictions, and the subsequent liberalization of investment opportunities, the Indian market is now home to several international brands, which has led to the present upsurge of FDI in this very important sector of the Indian economy. The book closely examines the nature and impact of such external changes on the industry’s structure and labour-related issues. The key feature of this book is that it presents a snapshot of all the domestic and international policies related to this sector, from the earliest relevant period to the present, and analyses the topical issues in significant detail. The book also offers some empirical analyses to show the impact of external changes on the concentration of firms in this industry and the regional inequalities that have emerged from regional variations in firms’ employment, labour-income and profit levels. Further, it addresses another striking feature, namely the role of preferential trading blocs or Regional Trading Arrangements (RTA) in creating trade-diverting effects related to this sector apart from the implications of foreign collaborations and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Many economists fear that the benefits of these RTAs for the partner countries are much greater than those for India, with net gains of incremental exports from India being small or even negative. This book discusses these critical issues in the context of India’s textile and apparel trade.

Book National Capitalisms Global Production Networks

Download or read book National Capitalisms Global Production Networks written by Christel Lane and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms in the clothing industry engage in global sourcing and operate in global markets. Their global production networks have often been subject to scrutiny as the power relationships between buyer firms in developed countries and supplier firms in developing countries raise issues concerned with 'fast fashion', the role of brands, labour standards in developing countries, job losses among the most vulnerable workers in Europe and the US, and the growing differentiation within the bloc of developing countries between the least developed and fast developers, such as China and India. This book analyses the way British, American and German firms in the clothing industry (manufacturing and retail) co-ordinate and govern their global production networks/value chains. It offers a multi-level study, concerned with processes of economic interaction between international, regional, and national economic institutions and actors. This combines an analysis of international/regional regulatory systems, global markets and conditions in the developing countries where suppliers are found, with a focus on the recent development of the clothing industry in three western countries. The analysis of firms' global networks focuses on the power relationships between western producers and retailers on the one hand and between buyer firms in developed and supplier firms in developing countries on the other, as well as their impact on labour. Utilising over one hundred interviews in six countries on three continents, it follows the value chain from developed to developing countries and studies the many issues which confront students of globalization at the current time. The study combines theoretical perspectives from economic sociology, political economy and management and seeks to utilise the complementary strengths of the Varieties of Capitalism approach and that of Global Production Networks/Value Chains. It will appeal to advanced students and academics interested in processes of economic globalization and the way firms manage them, as well as to those looking for a study of the clothing industry which combines theoretical depth with broad empirical coverage.

Book Rules without Rights

Download or read book Rules without Rights written by Tim Bartley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activists have exposed startling forms of labor exploitation and environmental degradation in global industries, leading many large retailers and brands to adopt standards for fairness and sustainability. This book is about the idea that transnational corporations can push these standards through their global supply chains, and in effect, pull factories, forests, and farms out of their local contexts and up to global best practices. For many scholars and practitioners, this kind of private regulation and global standard-setting can provide an alternative to regulation by territorially-bound, gridlocked, or incapacitated nation states, potentially improving environments and working conditions around the world and protecting the rights of exploited workers, impoverished farmers, and marginalized communities. But can private, voluntary standards actually create meaningful forms of regulation? Are forests and factories around the world actually being made into sustainable ecosystems and decent workplaces? Can global norms remake local orders? This book provides striking new answers by comparing the private regulation of land and labor in democratic and authoritarian settings. Case studies of sustainable forestry and fair labour standards in Indonesia and China show not only how transnational standards are implemented 'on the ground' but also how they are constrained and reconfigured by domestic governance. Combining rich multi-method analyses, a powerful comparative approach, and a new theory of private regulation, Rules without Rights reveals the contours and contradictions of transnational governance. Transformations in Governance is a major new academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. It brings together work that significantly advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series targets mainly single-authored or co-authored work, but it is pluralistic in terms of disciplinary specialization, research design, method, and geographical scope. Case studies as well as comparative studies, historical as well as contemporary studies, and studies with a national, regional, or international focus are all central to its aims. Authors use qualitative, quantitative, formal modeling, or mixed methods. A trade mark of the books is that they combine scholarly rigour with readable prose and an attractive production style. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.
