Book Economic Growth in Japan and the USSR

Download or read book Economic Growth in Japan and the USSR written by Angus Maddison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of output, the USSR and Japan account for one-fifth of the world's economy, occupying second and third places behind the United States. Japan has the world's fastest growth of per capita income and the USSR has not lagged far behind. But a century ago they were static feudal societies. This study analyzes the policies which enabled them to transform their economies adn to catch up with the developed world. The strategies of the two nations adopted have been very different: Japan has maintained small farms and factories, developed a labor-intensive technology, and has successfully penetrated the world export markets. The USSR, on the other hand, has created giant farms and factories adn remained fairly isolated from world trade. Since 1945 teh USSR has devoted one-eighth of her resources to military purposes, Japan practically nothing. In Economic Growth in Japan and the USSR, Angus Maddison offers a comparative analysis of the growth experience of these two countries that greatly enlarges our knowledge of the development process. A better understanding of their past experience can be particularly illuminating and relevant for economic policy in developing countries today. This classic text was first published in 1969.

Book Rural Economic Development in Japan

Download or read book Rural Economic Development in Japan written by Penelope Francks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historical literature on Japan, rural people have tended to be regarded as the exploited victims of the industrialisation process. This book provides an alternative view of the role and significance of the rural economy in Japan’s emergence as an economic power prior to World War II. Using theories and approaches derived from development studies and economic history the book describes the nineteenth-century development of a diversified, proto-industrial rural economy, focusing on the strategies employed by households as they sought to secure and improve their livelihoods. The book argues that rural people, through their ‘industrious revolution’, played an active part in determining the course of Japan’s agrarian transition and, eventually, the distinctive features of industrial Japan’s political economy, with the result that rural life still figures largely in the reality and imagination of contemporary Japan.

Book Institutions Industrial Upgrading and Economic Performance in Japan

Download or read book Institutions Industrial Upgrading and Economic Performance in Japan written by Terutomo Ozawa and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terutomo Ozawa examines Japan's once celebrated post-war economic success from a new perspective. He applies a 'flying geese' model of industrial upgrading in a country that is still catching-up, to explore the rise, fall and rebound of Japanese industry with its evolving institutions and policies. The book brings together and expands upon theories developed in the author's work over many years, using them as building blocks for his flying geese model. Concepts explored include: economics of hierarchical concatenation, increasing factor incongruity, comparative advantage (or market) recycling the Ricardo-Hicksian trap of industrial production, Smithian growth elan, triumvirate pro-trade structural transformation knowledge creation versus knowledge diversion, the price-knowledge/industry-flow mechanism 'a la David Hume' he syndrome of institutional incongruity, and socially justifiable moral hazard versus degenerative moral hazard. The dynamic process of industrial upgrading is analysed in detail, and important lessons for both developing and transition economies are highlighted. This fascinating book will attract a wide-ranging readership, encompassing practitioners and academics interested in international business, economic development, trade, and political science. In addition, sociologists focussing on business and industry, and researchers on, and policymakers in, developing and transition economies will also find this book of immense interest.
