Download or read book The Role of Microstructural Phenomena in Magnetic Thin Films Progress Report August 1990 December 1991 written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have pursued two lines of research during the first year and a half of this work. In the main portion of the project we have performed fundamental investigations of the microstructure and crystallographic texture of Co based alloys deposited on Cr underlayers. This has included atomic resolution electron microscopy of the cross-sections of CoNiCr on Cr thin films, as well as studies of the microstructures and properties of magnetic thin films produced with interlayers of Cr. The other portion of our work has centered on understanding the crystallography and crystal structure of CoSm/Cr thin films. These CoSm films have the potential of being utilized as high density media, but their structure is not yet understood.

Book Design and Development of Nanostructured Thin Films

Download or read book Design and Development of Nanostructured Thin Films written by Antonella Macagnano and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to their unique size-dependent physicochemical properties, nanostructured thin films are used in a wide range of applications from smart coating and drug delivery to electrocatalysis and highly-sensitive sensors. Depending on the targeted application and the deposition technique, these materials have been designed and developed by tuning their atomic-molecular 2D- and/or 3D-aggregation, thickness, crystallinity, and porosity, having effects on their optical, mechanical, catalytic, and conductive properties. Several open questions remain about the impact of nanomaterial production and use on environment and health. Many efforts are currently being made not only to prevent nanotechnologies and nanomaterials from contributing to environmental pollution but also to design nanomaterials to support, control, and protect the environment. This Special Issue aims to cover the recent advances in designing nanostructured films focusing on environmental issues related to their fabrication processes (e.g., low power and low cost technologies, the use of environmentally friendly solvents), their precursors (e.g., waste-recycled, bio-based, biodegradable, and natural materials), their applications (e.g., controlled release of chemicals, mimicking of natural processes, and clean energy conversion and storage), and their use in monitoring environment pollution (e.g., sensors optically- or electrically-sensitive to pollutants)

Book Tensile Testing of Thin Films

Download or read book Tensile Testing of Thin Films written by D. T. Read and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five technical papers covering the development of a set of techniques for measuring the tensile properties of thin films are gathered here. Also included are drawings of the mechanical components of the apparatus and listings of two computer programs. Additional necessary parts include a computer, instrumentation, two piezoelectric stacks, and an appropriate platform equipped with a microscope. Piezoelectric stacks are used as actuators. Noncontacting eddy-current displacement sensors measure both the tensile displacement and the force.Closed-loop feedback control allows a variety of test programs. The maximum available displacement is about 50 um, and the maximum available force is about 0.3 N. The resolution of displacement is about 25 nm, and the resolution of force is about 100 uN. Cyclic loading has been demonstrated for cycles as short as 20 s.

Book Midsize Facilities

Download or read book Midsize Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the instruments now used for materials research are too complex and expensive for individual investigators to own, operate, and maintain them. Consequently, they have become increasingly consolidated into multi-user, small to midsized research facilities, located at many sites around the country. The proliferation of these facilities, however, has drawn calls for a careful assessment of best principles for their operation. With support from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, the NRC carried out a study to characterize and discuss ways to optimize investments in materials research facility infrastructure with attention to midsize facilities. This report provides an assessment of the nature and importance of mid-sized facilities, their capabilities, challenges they face, current investment, and optimizing their effectiveness.

This publication also presents a number of organic materials which are widely used in handling and general processing...waxes, plastics, and lacquers for example. It is useful to individuals involved in study, development, and processing of metals and metallic compounds. It is invaluable for readers from the college level to industrial R & D and full-scale device fabrication, testing and sales. Scientific disciplines, work areas and individuals with great interest include: chemistry, physics, metallurgy, geology, solid state, ceramic and glass, research libraries, individuals dealing with chemical processing of inorganic materials, societies and schools.

Book Nanostructure Science and Technology

Download or read book Nanostructure Science and Technology written by Richard W. Siegel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely information on scientific and engineering developments occurring in laboratories around the world provides critical input to maintaining the economic and technological strength of the United States. Moreover, sharing this information quickly with other countries can greatly enhance the productivity of scientists and engineers. These are some of the reasons why the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been involved in funding science and technology assessments comparing the United States and foreign countries since the early 1980s. A substantial number of these studies have been conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) managed by Loyola College through a cooperative agreement with NSF. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Committee on Technology's Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology (CT/IWGN) worked with WTEC to develop the scope of this Nanostucture Science and Technology report in an effort to develop a baseline of understanding for how to strategically make Federal nanoscale R&D investments in the coming years. The purpose of the NSTC/WTEC activity is to assess R&D efforts in other countries in specific areas of technology, to compare these efforts and their results to U. S. research in the same areas, and to identify opportunities for international collaboration in precompetitive research. Many U. S. organizations support substantial data gathering and analysis efforts focusing on nations such as Japan. But often the results of these studies are not widely available. At the same time, government and privately sponsored studies that are in the public domain tend to be "input" studies.
