Book The Self defense Forces and Postwar Politics in Japan

Download or read book The Self defense Forces and Postwar Politics in Japan written by 佐道明広 and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1947, Japan eternally renounced war and the possession of armed forces with its constitution. How, then, did the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) survive, moreover, evolve over the ensuing 70 years into the prominent presence it is today? Sado Akihiro reviews the JSDF's history chiefly from the viewpoint of restrictions imposed on it by civil officials of the national bureaucracy, based on lessons gleaned from the arbitrary conduct of the military in pre-World War II days. He also explores the financial constraints placed on the JSDF in the form of a percentage of the GNP. This book traces the inside story of U.S.-Japan relations and Japan's defense policy. It attempts to shine a light on the true state of the JSDF in the midst of new challenges that put it at a crossroads, including post-9/11 international terrorism, North Korean nuclear development, and China's increased military presence in Asia"--Back cover.

Book Friendship Across the Seas

Download or read book Friendship Across the Seas written by Naoyuki Agawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book describes the history of the relationship between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the heir to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), and the United States Navy (US Navy), with a focus on the individuals who helped build it. Former enemies who fought fiercely on the seas and in the air during the Pacific War, the two navies came to respect each other in action. Soon after the war, when the Cold War turned hot, they began to work together as allies, driven by their respective national interests. With the generous assistance of the US Navy, the JMSDF was established as its counterpart. Over the years, these two navies have gradually built strong ties. Individual officers and sailors on both sides overcame mixed feelings about their erstwhile foes to feel respect for and trust in each other. This was made possible by conducting countless joint exercises and operations at sea. US Navy leaders began to realize that this small maritime force, notwithstanding domestic political, constitutional, and legal limitations, does its job well, is reliable, and can be fully trusted. The JMSDF realized that, sharing common interests and values, there was no better navy in the Asia-Pacific region to ally with. Over seventy years of accumulated shared experiences have transformed this into perhaps the most successful navy-to-navy partnership in the world. The US-Japan maritime alliance today is anchored in this history. Numerous admirals, officers, and sailors of the two navies working together have greatly contributed to the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region for the past seven decades. This book is intended for readers interested in the history of US-Japan relations and for naval officers and sailors from the US and other countries. It is the author’s sincere desire that they read this book and appreciate the longstanding cooperation between the JMSDF and the US Navy.

Book The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force

Download or read book The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force written by Robert D. Eldridge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive Japanese-language materials, this book is the first to examine the development of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force. It addresses: how the GSDF was able to emerge as the post-war successor of the Imperial Japanese Army despite Japan’s anti-militarist constitution; how the GSDF, despite the public skepticism and even hostility that greeted its creation, built domestic and international legitimacy; and how the GSDF has responded to changes in international and domestic environments. This path-breaking study of the world’s third-largest-economic power’s ground army is timely for two reasons. First, the resurgence of tensions in Northeast Asia over territorial disputes, and the emphasis recent Japanese governments have placed on using the GSDF for defending Japan’s outlying islands is driving media coverage and specialist interest in the GSDF. Second, the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami has focused global attention on the GSDF as Japan’s lead disaster relief organization. This highly informative and thoroughly researched book provides insight for policy makers and academics interested in Japanese foreign and defense policies.

Download or read book Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Efforts to Counter Threats to Japan Jmsdf During Cold War Threats from China North Korea Terrorism and Piracy Ballistic Missile Defense Aegis Destroyers written by U S Military and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) was heavily focused on defending Japan from a Soviet invasion and ensuring sea lines of communications (SLOC) were available for U.S. naval forces in the event of a major conflict. After the Cold War, the JMSDF had to adopt new missions based on the constantly changing threat environment. This thesis assesses how well the JMSDF responded to a variety of threats to Japan during each of the three decades since the end of the Cold War. The main chapters look at the threats Japan faced each decade and then how JMSDF equipment and policy changed as a result of the identified threats. The research suggests that the JMSDF usually falls in the middle of the spectrum and adequately meets defense requirements. It also shows that there were times where the JMSDF was not prepared or was over prepared, but adjustments were made to bring the JMSDF back to the middle ground. This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.I. Conclusion: Developments Since 2010Since the Imperial Japanese Navy was disbanded in 1945, Japan has gone from not possessing a navy to possessing a well-respected maritime force that maintains capabilities found only among the most advanced navies of the world. The maritime component of the Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF), the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF), started as a way for Japan to counter regional threats directed at Japan. The JMSDF's mission was, and still is, to prevent threats from reaching the shores of Japan.

Book Management in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force

Download or read book Management in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force written by Takeshi Norimatsu and published by . This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the organization and management of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and its similarities and common features with Japanese corporate management, a common style grounded in culture and more specifically in the Japanese educational system. In nearly one hundred years organizational theory, practices, and systems were mostly transplanted from the United States and European countries. However, these systems evolved to fit the environment and culture of the Japanese people. This study investigates features and relationships among the Japanese environment, culture, educational systems, and management style. Japanese society and culture deeply effect the education system, and this system in turn socializes people in basic beliefs and values (e.g., harmony and loyalty) foundational to Japanese corporate practices (e.g., group decision making and lifetime employment). This study seeks to advance our understanding of how JMSDF participates in the same culture, is grounded in the same beliefs, and engages in similar practices as other Japanese organizations.
