Book Immigrant Youth in Cultural Transition

Download or read book Immigrant Youth in Cultural Transition written by John W. Berry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Classic Edition of 'Immigrant Youth in Cultural Transition', first published in 2006, includes a new introduction by the editors, describing the ongoing relevance of this volume in the context of future challenges for this vital field of study. It emphasizes the importance of continued actions and policies to improve the quality of interactions between multiple ethno-cultural groups, and highlights how these issues have developed the field of cross-cultural psychology. In the original text, an international team of psychologists with interests in acculturation, identity, and development describes the experience and adaptation of immigrant youth, using data from over 7,000 immigrant youth from diverse cultural backgrounds and national youth living in 13 countries of settlement. They explore the way in which immigrant adolescents carry out their lives at the intersection of two cultures (those of their heritage group and the national society), and how well these youth are adapting to their intercultural experience. It explores four distinct patterns followed by youth during their acculturation: *an integration pattern, in which youth orient themselves to, and identify with both cultures; *an ethnic pattern, in which youth are oriented mainly to their own group; *a national pattern, in which youth look primarily to the national society; and *a diffuse pattern, in which youth are uncertain and confused about how to live interculturally. The study shows the variation in both the psychological adaptation and the sociocultural adaptation among youth, with most adapting well. This Classic Edition continues to be highly valuable reading for researchers, graduate students, and public policy makers who have an interest in public health, psychology, anthropology, sociology, demography, education, and psychiatry.

Book Ethnic Identify Familial Ethnic Socialization Religiosity and Psychological Adjustment in Middle Eastern Emerging Adults

Download or read book Ethnic Identify Familial Ethnic Socialization Religiosity and Psychological Adjustment in Middle Eastern Emerging Adults written by Iren Assar and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the current study was to determine if protective and risk factors are associated with good or poor well-being within the Middle-Eastern emerging adults. The relationships among ethnic identity, religiosity, family ethnic socialization (protective factors), acculturative stress and discrimination (risk factors), level of acculturation and self-esteem were examined using a sample of 152 Middle Eastern emerging adults. Results indicated that Middle Eastern emerging adults who reported higher commitment of ethnic identity experienced less depression. High levels of familial ethnic socialization were also associated with less depression. Participants who reported high levels of acculturative stress and discrimination also experienced lowers levels of self-esteem. High levels of acculturative stress and discrimination were also associated with higher levels of depression. A regression was used to examine if strong ethnic identity, familial ethnic socialization, and religiosity positively predicted self-esteem. This hypothesis was not supported. These results are discussed in terms of a protective/risk factor framework as well as the developmental state of identity development. Bilingualism, generation status, and the differences between collectivist and individual cultural values are also discussed.

Book Racial Identity Development and Psychological Adjustment in Biracial Individuals of Minority Minority Racial Group Descent

Download or read book Racial Identity Development and Psychological Adjustment in Biracial Individuals of Minority Minority Racial Group Descent written by Kizzie Paule Walker and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism and race as a social construct, individuals with biological parents racially distinct from each other have biracial identity options (i.e., Singular, Border, Protean, and Transcendent) (e.g., Rockquemore and Brunsma, 2002). The purpose of the current study was to examine factors that influenced biracial individuals' level of racial/ethnic identity development and the impact on biracial identity and psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and psychological well-being). A total of 199 biracial individuals, who ranged in age from 18 to 55 years, completed an online survey that measured factors such as the rule of hypodescent (i.e., one-drop rule), physical appearance, self-monitoring, and exposure to multicultural experiences. Although the one-drop rule was not a significant predictor of biracial identity options, there were other significant findings within this population. Physical resemblance to two or more racial groups and exposure to multicultural experiences predicted biracial individuals' identification with a Border or Protean identity. Second, this study found that a high level of exposure to multicultural experiences best predicted a high level of ethnic identity development and positive interactions with other racial groups. Lastly, the current study found that the previously mentioned factors also contributed to biracial individuals' psychological adjustment (i.e., self-esteem and psychological well-being). Limitations of the current study and recommendations for future research with this population were also discussed.

Book Critical Perspectives on Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life

Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their later years, Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are not in equally good-or equally poor-health. There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Book Handbook of Race and Development in Mental Health

Download or read book Handbook of Race and Development in Mental Health written by Edward Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is unique in the field for a number of reasons, both in structure and in content. Specifically, it will have leading experts on specific age groups (Childhood to Adolescence, Young Adulthood to Middle Age, and The Elderly) within the cultural groups of interest (European-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans) contribute a chapter covering current research on both positive and negative functioning for each population. Each chapter will present basic demographic information, strengths that contribute to resilience, and three significant challenges each group faces to maintaining mental health. Each chapter will then include an integrative section, where ideas are advanced about how the strengths of each group can be harnessed to address the challenges that group faces. To conclude, each chapter will propose future directions for research which addresses integrative approaches to mental health for each group, and the implications that such approaches could have for future treatment. The main points of each section of each chapter will be visually summarized in a concluding table.
