Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

The study has been driven by contradictory interests; while 'gender and development' discourses are embedded in neo-liberal and African feminist approaches to democracy. The latter approaches reveal that discussion of gender equality based in sex ratios are inadequate for understanding the complex meaning of university's institutional cultures. Thus, the creation of gender responsive university culture involves theorisation of the perceptions and experiences of men and women students. Therefore, working with data generated through qualitative methodologies, Dr. Muasya synthesizes discourses on access to opportunities for 'surviving' campus life (such as employment on campus) and on sexual harassment (as a space in which notions of masculinity and 'respectable womanhood' are negotiated) to reveal a culture in which transgression against conventional norms of identity is heavily curtailed. While Dr. Muasya does not generalise her theoretical findings, her research oints of the need to explore questions of equality beyond notions of 'gender equality policies' required for sustainable development.

Book excerpt: "Sexual harassment is a problem for many women in the workplace, both within the United States and internationally, that brings about consequences not only for the individuals involved, but also for organizations (Hanish, 1996). Research has suggested that perceptions of sexual harassment may vary based on several variables (e.g. gender, cutlural background, and sex-role identity). The current study focused on the effects of gender and culture (American vs. Japanese) on perceptions of and suggestions for coping with sexual harassment among nontraditional persons. Information regarding gender, culture, and sex-, role identity was collected from study participants. Participants were then given four scenarios depicting situations of sexual harassment, varying on level of ambiguity and situation setting, and asked 1) to rate the degree to which the scenario represented an incident of sexual harassment and 2) the likelihood of recommending various coping suggestions to victims. Statistical analyses found no significant differences in perceptions of sexual harassment for obvious scenarios. Significant culture and culture by gender effects showed that Japanese particpants were more likelty to rate the ambiguous workplace scenario as sexual harassment, with Japanese males' ratings highest. A significant gender effect was found for the ambiguous school scenario, with females rating the situation as more sexually harassing than did males. In regard to coping suggestions, general trends indicate that Japanese participants were more likely to recommend private coping strategies, while American participants were more likely to recommend public coping strategies"--Document.

Book excerpt: Understanding what organizational characteristics influence perceptions of sexual harassment is essential to properly address it. Previous research has found that zero-tolerance policies have been the most successful in decreasing the prevalence of sexual harassment. Specifically, there are six features consistently included in policies addressing organizational injustice which may strengthen the impact of a zero-tolerance policy. Organizational climate, specifically gender climate, shapes what sexual harassment looks like and influences its prevalence. The current study examined the effects of sexual harassment policy (six features included vs. six features not included) and gender climate (pay discrepancy between genders vs. no pay discrepancy) on perceived organizational tolerance for sexual harassment. It was hypothesized that a more comprehensive policy and no pay discrepancy would lead to lower perceived organizational tolerance. It was also hypothesized that the relationship between policy and perceived organizational tolerance for sexual harassment would be significantly stronger when there was no pay discrepancy between genders. The study sample consisted of 185 MTurk workers who read vignettes regarding policy and climate and completed a survey measuring perceived organizational tolerance for sexual harassment. Results showed that contrary to the hypotheses, policy and organizational climate did not significantly influence perceived organizational tolerance for sexual harassment, and no interaction occurred. Although findings were not statistically significant, organizations should implement zero-tolerance sexual harassment policies and treat their employees equally to deter sexual harassment and create a culture of equality. Future research should investigate how other aspects of gender climate could affect perceived organizational tolerance for sexual harassment.
