Download or read book The Role of Colloids and Suspended Particles in Radionuclide Transport in the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal written by Peter Vilks and published by Pinewa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AECL Research is developing a concept for the permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste in a deep engineered vault in plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield and is preparing an environmental impact statement (EIS) to document its case for the acceptability of the disposal concept. This report addresses the role of particles in radionuclide transport. It summarizes studies of natural particles in groundwater and presents the arguments used to justify the omission of particle-facilitated transport in the geosphere model that is based on the Whiteshell Research Area and used in the postclosure assessment study case.

Download or read book Treatise on Geochemistry written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 14787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!

Download or read book Microbial Issues Pertaining to the Canadian Concept for the Disposal of Nuclear Fuel Waste written by Simcha Stroes-Gascoyne and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AECL Research is developing a concept for the permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste in plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield. The Federal Environmental Assessment Review Panel has issued a set of guidelines to be used in preparing an environmental impact statement (EIS) that require the addressing of a number of microbiological factors and their potential to affect the integrity of the multiple barrier system on which the disposal concept is based. This report formulates views and positions on microbiological factors that could influence the performance of a disposal vault in plutonic rock. These include the presence and survival of microbes, biofilms, corrosion, biodegradation of emplaced materials, gas production, geochemical changes, radionuclide migration, colloid formation, mutation, pathogens, and methylation. Studies being performed to underscore and strengthen current knowledge are briefly discussed.
Download or read book Natural Analogs in Support of the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal written by Jan J. Cramer and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data used for the assessment modelling of the Canadian concept for disposal of nuclear fuel waste is mainly based on observations from short-term laboratory and field experiments, although it must apply to periods of 10,000 to one million years. Natural analogs can provide useful data and a qualitative illustration of the interaction of processes and materials in complex natural systems. This report reviews the available natural analog information used in support of the Canadian concept, with particular emphasis on the disposal of used CANDU fuel. The report gives a definition of natural analogs and an overview of the various types of analogs and analog studies; describes the main components of the disposal system, including the vault, the geosphere, and the biosphere, and gives specific examples for each; and describes several comprehensive natural systems that contain a number of features and processes similar to the disposal concept and that are under study by other countries as part of their waste disposal management programs.
Download or read book Readings from the Treatise on Geochemistry written by Heinrich D Holland and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readings from the Treatise on Geochemistry offers an interdisciplinary reference for scientists, researchers and upper undergraduate and graduate level geochemistry students that is more affordable than the full Treatise. For professionals, this volume will provide an overview of the field as a whole. For students, it will provide more in-depth introductory content than is found in broad-based geochemistry textbooks. Articles were selected from chapters across all volumes of the full Treatise, and include: The Origin and Earliest History of the Earth, Compositional Evolution of the Mantle, Evolution of Sedimentary Rocks, Soil Formation, Geochemistry of Groundwater, Geologic History of Seawater, Hydrothermal Processes, and Biogeochemistry of Primary Production in the Sea. Comprehensive, interdisciplinary and authoritative content selected by leading subject experts Robust illustrations, figures and tables Affordably priced sampling of content from the full Treatise on Geochemistry

Download or read book Manipulation of Groundwater Colloids for Environmental Restoration written by John McCarthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-01-04 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable resource discusses several strategies of manipulating colloids for environmental restoration, identifies advantages and disadvantages of each strategy, and considers obstacles limiting the application of each strategy. Approaches evaluated include the following: Chemical modification of subsurface systems to mobilize or deposit colloids in situ Altering the mobility of microorganisms to improve delivery of microbes for bioremediation Manipulating colloids or biocolloids (bacteria) to change aquifer permeability to either enhance bioremediation or create in situ barriers Introducing modified colloids, surfactants, and emulsions to control colloid mobility or to increase recovery of sorbed contaminants by pump and treat methods Manipulation of Groundwater Colloids for Environmental Restoration also contains short, focused research reports on specific studies relevant to the various approaches under consideration. Subjects covered range from mobility of organic macromolecules by controlled field injection experiments to new techniques that investigate surface chemistry and aggregation of inorganic colloids. Other topics discussed include the depositional behavior and transport of biocolloids in porous media, surfactants as modifiers of surface binding sites on colloids, and genetic engineering of microorganisms to serve as contaminant-scavenging biocolloids. Manipulation of Groundwater Colloids for Environmental Restoration is an excellent resource for research scientists in hydrology, chemistry, and microbiology; environmental consultants; regulators; environmental engineers; bioremediation microbiologists; and engineers.
