This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume explores the concept of civil society as an engine for economic and social well-being. Featuring contributions from the 2017 Griffiths School of Management and IT Annual Conference on Business, Entrepreneurship and Ethics (GMSAC) held in Oradea, Romania, this volume provides different perspectives, emerging studies and trends that are crucial to the further understanding of the interconnection of civil society, economic development and social stability. The enclosed contributions address key topics such as a) the ways in which national, regional and local governments are best equipped to support economic and social development, b) how government, business and non-profit sectors can support economic and social stability and c) the ways in which growing economies’ active societies can strengthen civil society. Research and practice have proven that there is a great potential for civil society organizations to support socio-economic well-being, both directly and indirectly. As a result, the interplay between civil society, economics and social well-being is highly relevant to current business and economic research and is a topic of discussion by academics and practitioners in the government, business and non-profit sectors. This volume showcases some of the current research, cases and discussions in this area from an interdisciplinary, global perspective. Featuring contributions exploring timely subjects such as consumer behavior, the hospitality industry, education, corporate social responsibility (CSR), banking, health care, and semiotics, this book is appropriate for researchers, academics and policy makers in economic and social development, business ethics and sustainability.

Book Civil Society Development

Download or read book Civil Society Development written by Jude Howell and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting out to explore critically the way civil society has entered development thinking, policy and practice as a paradigmatic concept of the 21st century, Howell (development studies, U. of Sussex) and Pearce (Latin American politics, U. of Bradford) trace the historical path leading to the encounter between the ideas of development and civil society in the late 1980s and how donors have translated these into development policy an programs. They find that there are competing normative visions, which have deep roots in Western European political thought, about the role of civil society in relation to the state and market both among donors and within the societies where donors are operating. This leads to donors playing a major role in shaping the character of service provision. They also argue that their study exposes the hitherto unexplored power of the market, as opposed to solely the state, to distort donor programs. c. Book News Inc.

Book Entrepreneurship and Social Capital

Download or read book Entrepreneurship and Social Capital written by Anirban Sengupta and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, India has established its identity in the globalized world as a significant provider of services in the area of information and communication technology. While the fame has primarily come with development of large and respected Indian enterprises operating worldwide, what has widened the scope of this development is the extensive growth of small and medium entrepreneurship in this sector. Contrary to various other industries in India, community influences are still unclear there. However, this does not mean that relationships play no role in the operation of this industry. Instead, the idea of a relationship has new meaning. This book is an attempt to understand sociologically the experience of information and communications technology (ICT) entrepreneurs in starting up and running new enterprises. Based on rich qualitative data collected from founders of small and medium enterprises situated in different Indian cities, this book attempts to understand entrepreneurship using the framework of social capital. Primarily aimed at an academic audience, this book will also be useful for civil society organizations and policy makers attempting to understand and promote entrepreneurship. Book Civil Society in the Global South

Download or read book Civil Society in the Global South written by Palash Kamruzzaman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years civil society has been seen as a key route for democracy promotion and solving development ‘problems’ in low-income countries. However, the very concept of civil society is deeply rooted in European traditions and values. In pursuing civil society reform in non-Western countries, many scholars along with well-meaning international agencies and donor organisations fail to account for non-Western values and historical experiences. Civil Society in the Global South seeks to redress this balance by offering diverse accounts of civil society from the global South, authored by scholars and researchers who are reflecting on their observations of civil society in their own countries. The countries studied in the volume range from across Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East to give a rich account of how countries from the global south conceptualise and construct civil society. The book demonstrates how local conditions are often unsuited to the ideal type of civil society as delineated in Western values, for instance in cases where numerous political, racial and ethnic sub-groups are ‘fighting’ for autonomy. By disentangling local contexts of countries from across the global South, this book demonstrates that it is important to view civil society through the lens of local conditions, rather than viewing it as something that needs to be ‘discovered’ or ‘manufactured’ in non-Western societies. Civil Society in the Global South will be particularly useful to high-level students and scholars within development studies, sociology, anthropology, social policy, politics, international relations and human geography.

Book excerpt: The social economy sector (SES) faces pressures for greater accountability to their funders, users, and citizens, and a growing need to report good practices in the social, economic, and financial impact that they have on the community. Featuring research on topics such as online communication, social accounting, and value reporting, this book is ideal for managers, financial consultants, academicians, researchers, and students interested in accounting, management, internal control, auditing, and technology use in the SES.

Book Scaling up SDGs Implementation

Download or read book Scaling up SDGs Implementation written by Godwell Nhamo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume challenges global leaders and citizenry to do more in order to resource the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (AfSD) and its 17 interwoven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Starting from the concept ‘we cannot manage what we cannot measure’, the book presents some cases showing how to draw national level baselines for the domestication and localisation of the SDGs seeking to provide a clear roadmap towards achieving the 2030 AfSD. Scaling up SDGs Implementation is targeted at the United Nations, national and state governments, sub-national governments, the corporate sector and civil society, including higher education institutes, labour groups, non-governmental organisations and youth movements. The book is cognizant of these institutions’ common, but differentiated responsibilities and capabilities within their socio-political, environmental and economic conditions. The book presents case studies of how the corporate sector has been scaling up SDGs implementation, from the tourism sector, insurance, to the aviation and agricultural sectors. To make sure that no one is left behind, the volume includes cases on solutions for pressing environmental and socio-economic problems ranging from cooperatives in Brazil to the conservation of springs in Zimbabwe. The matter of finding synergies between the climate SDG and the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is elaborated at length. Lastly, the book discusses how institutions of higher education remain critical pillars in SDGs scaling up, with cases of curriculum re-orientation in South Africa to the rolling out of the Women’s University in Africa. In this context, this volume challenges every global citizen and organization to invest every effort into making the implementation of the SDGs a success as we welcome the second four to five year segment down the road to the year 2030.
