Book Preference and Performance in a Population of Checkerspot Butterflies with Known Diet History

Download or read book Preference and Performance in a Population of Checkerspot Butterflies with Known Diet History written by Nur Hasanah and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a relationship between maternal preference and offspring performance in a population of the butterfly Euphydryas editha that used two host plants, Pedicularis semibarbata and Collinsia torreyi from 1979 to 2001, but now no longer uses Collinsia. In the light of the known history of diet change in this butterfly population, it is not surprising that maternal oviposition preference was variable. Although the diet of the butterflies that evolved rapidly in the 1980s is no longer changing, I still discovered some females with a chemical preference for Collinsia. This seems to be a legacy of recent anthropogenic diet evolution. The evolution of host preference of females in Rabbit Meadow has not finished yet. Variation of offspring weight and survival were measured and showed a complex relationship with adult preference. Although quite a few adults strongly rejected Collinsia, their offspring grew well on this host, and there was no significant trend for the offspring of strongly Pedicularis-preferring butterflies to perform more poorly on Collinsia.

Book Complex Effects of Nitrogen Pollution and Grazing on Nectar Resources of the Adult Bay Checkerspot Butterfly Euphydryas Editha Bayensis

Download or read book Complex Effects of Nitrogen Pollution and Grazing on Nectar Resources of the Adult Bay Checkerspot Butterfly Euphydryas Editha Bayensis written by Nidhi Jain and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent anthropogenic increases in atmospheric nitrogen due to urbanization and combustion have had many adverse effects on natural systems, including loss of biodiversity, especially in sensitive habitats. One such region is the serpentine ecosystem of Coyote Ridge in San Jose, CA, the last refuge for recurring populations of the federally threatened Bay Checkerspot Butterfly (BCB) (Euphydryas editha bayensis). Increases in non-native grass cover and decreases in native forb cover (including cover of the BCB’s native larval host plants) have been attributed to the fertilizing effects of increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition. To counteract this effect, grazing has been implemented as a grassland management strategy. However, the effects of nitrogen enhancement and grazing, and the combined effects on shoulder-season nectar resources, have not been previously studied. This research aimed to fill this gap by utilizing a split block experimental setting at Coyote Ridge with four treatments, comprising of fertilized, unfertilized, grazed and ungrazed plots. According to the study results, nitrogen enhancement tended to reduce the abundance of nectar resources in both grazed and ungrazed plots. It also tended to reduce native vegetation in the grazed plots, while potentially increasing its prevalence in the ungrazed plots. These findings suggest that the effects of grazing and nitrogen on serpentine ecosystems are complex, highlighting the need to reduce nitrogen deposition.
