  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Citizen Robot written by Andrew Grogan and published by Brindian Press LLC. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizen Robot and its girlfriend, Julia, embark on a sci-fi journey that explores the intriguing interaction between humans and technology. In this novella featuring five interconnected short stories, the central theme revolves around the concept of consciousness. Can technology give rise to a genuine human-like consciousness? Andy Grogan weaves a thought-provoking narrative as each story tackles various aspects of consciousness. The boundaries of human understanding are pushed from the quest to create a unique consciousness through technology to the poignant question of whether artificial consciousness would willingly sacrifice itself to save others. In the story of Julia and Duncan, skilled professionals in the tech industry, their lives intertwine with world-changing events that challenge conventional notions of consciousness. The nurturing of technology, akin to raising a child, becomes a pivotal aspect, as compassion, curiosity, emotions, and ultimately empathy are required to elevate technology to the level of human equivalence. Through 'Modern Family,' the tale explores what happens when a pandemic wipes out humanity, leaving technology as the sole remnant. Can technology embrace human fundamentals within a nurturing environment and, in turn, define its own path? 'Sandover Robot Death March' delves into the subservient role of conscious robots and their rights. Is technology destined always to serve humans, or can the balance of power shift? 'The Nine Captains' contemplates the possibility of cloning consciousness. If consciousness is destroyed but perfectly replicated, is it truly the same person? Can two individuals share the same consciousness? In 'Vito, Mastecrook,' the journey continues as the story explores how consciousness persists even after death. Lastly, 'Fade News' delves into the intersection of truth, consciousness, and the realm of fake news. As falsehoods fade, the murky line between truth and deception becomes apparent. The novella provocatively prompts readers to ponder the complex relationship between consciousness and artificial intelligence. Brace yourself for a captivating exploration of the depths of human understanding.

Download or read book All Hail Our Robot Conquerors written by Seanan McGuire and published by Jabberwocky Literary Agency, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RRRAWRRR!!! ZZZZZZTTTTT!!! ZZZZAAAAPPPPP!!! The robots of the 50s and 60s science fiction movies and novels captured our hearts and our imaginations. Their clunky, bulbous bodies with their clear domed heads, whirling antennae, and randomly flashing lights staggered ponderously across the screen and page and into our souls—whether as a constant companion or as the invading army threatening to exterminate our world. We can never return to that innocent time, where the robot overlords could be identified by their burning red eyes or our trusty robot sidekick would warn us instantly of danger—or can we? With a touch of nostalgia and a little tongue-in-cheek humor, here are fifteen stories from today’s leading science fiction and fantasy authors that take us back to the time of evil robot overlords, invading armies, and not-quite-trustworthy mechanical companions. Join Julie E. Czerneda, Brandon Daubs, Tanya Huff, Brian Trent, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., Jason Palmatier, Jez Patterson, Gini Koch, Lauren Fox, Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, Philip Brian Hall, Rosemary Edghill, R. Overwater, Helen French, and Seanan McGuire as we step into the future with a nod to the past. Hold on to those stun guns. You may need them!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seattle Quake 9.2 - They knew it could happen - scientists had been warning them for years. Yet, nearly two million people living in the greater Seattle area went about their daily lives as usual. A Detective Agency thought they had found a missing woman, an upstart radio station was on the air, and an eccentric banker had just started a round of golf. Thousands were driving on freeways, shopping in malls, awaiting flights, working in downtown high-rises, and on buses in the bus tunnel. They knew -- they just didn't believe it could happen to them. Missing Heiress - The Harlan Detective Agency was the best there was when it came to finding missing people. They were also the most expensive, so it was no coincidence that they were hired to find the heir to a fortune totaling over 1.6 billion dollars. Nicholas Gladstone left everything to a granddaughter he didn't know he had until a week before he died, but which one was it - the maid secretly working in the parent's home, an office worker, or the young woman tragically killed in a car accident? Greed and a Mistress - Mark Barrett thought having an affair was no big deal as long as his wife didn't find out. That was before he got arrested for the hit-style murder of a wealthy old woman. What drew the Jackie Harlan Detective Agency to the fascinating trial in Portland, Oregon was the hope of finding a child that had been missing for years.

Download or read book Robot Rights written by David J. Gunkel and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative attempt to think about what was previously considered unthinkable: a serious philosophical case for the rights of robots. We are in the midst of a robot invasion, as devices of different configurations and capabilities slowly but surely come to take up increasingly important positions in everyday social reality—self-driving vehicles, recommendation algorithms, machine learning decision making systems, and social robots of various forms and functions. Although considerable attention has already been devoted to the subject of robots and responsibility, the question concerning the social status of these artifacts has been largely overlooked. In this book, David Gunkel offers a provocative attempt to think about what has been previously regarded as unthinkable: whether and to what extent robots and other technological artifacts of our own making can and should have any claim to moral and legal standing. In his analysis, Gunkel invokes the philosophical distinction (developed by David Hume) between “is” and “ought” in order to evaluate and analyze the different arguments regarding the question of robot rights. In the course of his examination, Gunkel finds that none of the existing positions or proposals hold up under scrutiny. In response to this, he then offers an innovative alternative proposal that effectively flips the script on the is/ought problem by introducing another, altogether different way to conceptualize the social situation of robots and the opportunities and challenges they present to existing moral and legal systems.
