Book excerpt: Behind every light switch is a coal miner. Inside every car engine is a roustabout and mud logger. Our smartphones charge on coal, our vehicles drink gas and oil given up by our prehistoric ancestors and pumped from the ground by people we never meet. Meanwhile, there are Dani and Cap Pellegrin, Mr. John, Robert Brooks, Allen and Mora and Jacob. They are just as human in their feelings, just as American, yet somehow hidden, forgotten if we ever knew them. They have their own expectations of life, their love, their children, their craft. Just like us. If we could just take a peek in those lives, to see what they're like, we could start to appreciate each other. Well #9 is just a small attempt to peel back those layers, so we can see their faces and see ourselves.

Download or read book Inhabited Spaces written by Nicole Guenther Discenza and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to think of early medieval people as unsophisticated about geography because their understandings of space and place often differed from ours, yet theirs were no less complex. Anglo-Saxons conceived of themselves as living at the centre of a cosmos that combined order and plenitude, two principles in a constant state of tension. In Inhabited Spaces, Nicole Guenther Discenza examines a variety of Anglo-Latin and Old English texts to shed light on Anglo-Saxon understandings of space. Anglo-Saxon models of the universe featured a spherical earth at the centre of a spherical universe ordered by God. They sought to shape the universe into knowable places, from where the earth stood in the cosmos, to the kingdoms of different peoples, and to the intimacy of the hall. Discenza argues that Anglo-Saxon works both construct orderly place and illuminate the limits of human spatial control.

Book Commemoration and Oblivion in Royalist Print Culture 1658 1667

Download or read book Commemoration and Oblivion in Royalist Print Culture 1658 1667 written by Erin Peters and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the measures taken by the newly re-installed monarchy and its supporters to address the drastic events of the previous two decades. Profoundly preoccupied with - and, indeed, anxious about - the uses and representations of the nation’s recent troubled past, the returning royalist regime heavily relied upon the dissemination, in popular print, of prescribed varieties of remembering and forgetting in order to actively shape the manner in which the Civil Wars, the Regicide, and the Interregnum were to be embedded in the nation’s collective memory. This study rests on a broad foundation of documentary evidence drawn from hundreds of widely distributed and affordable pamphlets and broadsheets that were intended to shape popular memories, and interpretations, of recent events. It thus makes a substantial original contribution to the fields of early modern memory studies and the history of the English Civil Wars and early Restoration.

Book True Worship

  • Pages : 113 pages

Download or read book True Worship written by Vaughan Roberts and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of true worship? What are we actaully doing when we meet together for 'church' on Sundays? And how does that connect with what we do the rest of the week? Vaughan Roberts answers these questions and more, as he brings readers back to the Bible in order to define what worship is and isn't, and what it should and shouldn't be. While we may struggle to define worship by arguing about singing hymns with the organ, versus modern songs with guitars and drums, or about the place of certain spiritual gifts, Roberts suggests we are asking the wrong questions. For true worship is more than this - it is to encompass the whole of life. This book challenges us to worship God every day of the week, with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.

Book Chaucer

  • Author : Marion Turner
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2020-09-22
  • ISBN : 0691210152
  • Pages : 626 pages

Download or read book Chaucer written by Marion Turner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than any other canonical English writer, Geoffrey Chaucer lived and worked at the centre of political life--yet his poems are anything but conventional. Edgy, complicated, and often dark, they reflect a conflicted world, and their astonishing diversity and innovative language earned Chaucer renown as the father of English literature. Marion Turner, however, reveals him as a great European writer and thinker. To understand his accomplishment, she reconstructs in unprecedented detail the cosmopolitan world of Chaucer's adventurous life, focusing on the places and spaces that fired his imagination. Uncovering important new information about Chaucer's travels, private life, and the early circulation of his writings, this innovative biography documents a series of vivid episodes, moving from the commercial wharves of London to the frescoed chapels of Florence and the kingdom of Navarre, where Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived side by side. The narrative recounts Chaucer's experiences as a prisoner of war in France, as a father visiting his daughter's nunnery, as a member of a chaotic Parliament, and as a diplomat in Milan, where he encountered the writings of Dante and Boccaccio. At the same time, the book offers a comprehensive exploration of Chaucer's writings, taking the reader to the Troy of Troilus and Criseyde, the gardens of the dream visions, and the peripheries and thresholds of The Canterbury Tales. By exploring the places Chaucer visited, the buildings he inhabited, the books he read, and the art and objects he saw, this landmark biography tells the extraordinary story of how a wine merchant's son became the poet of The Canterbury Tales." -- Publisher's description.
