Book The Mana of Mass Society

Download or read book The Mana of Mass Society written by William Mazzarella and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often invoke the “magic” of mass media to describe seductive advertising or charismatic politicians. In The Mana of Mass Society, William Mazzarella asks what happens to social theory if we take that idea seriously. How would it change our understanding of publicity, propaganda, love, and power? Mazzarella reconsiders the concept of “mana,” which served in early anthropology as a troubled bridge between “primitive” ritual and the fascination of mass media. Thinking about mana, Mazzarella shows, means rethinking some of our most fundamental questions: What powers authority? What in us responds to it? Is the mana that animates an Aboriginal ritual the same as the mana that energizes a revolutionary crowd, a consumer public, or an art encounter? At the intersection of anthropology and critical theory, The Mana of Mass Society brings recent conversations around affect, sovereignty, and emergence into creative contact with classic debates on religion, charisma, ideology, and aesthetics.

Book Running Dogs and Rose s Children

Download or read book Running Dogs and Rose s Children written by Eric George de Jong and published by Blue Weaver Distributors. This book was released on with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running Dogs and Rose’s Children tell the story of how Eric and wife Jenny are plunged into parenthood after adopting three siblings aged eleven, five and one after their mother died of cancer. The new family set about starting over, building a family life together from scratch, in their rambling farmhouse outside Harare, Zimbabwe. Their story was on course for a happily ever after ending, until their lives and the lives of those around them were destroyed by Robert Mugabe’s war of terror, unleashed on white farmers and opposition party members, launching an era of economic, social and political turmoil which eventually saw the family fleeing the country for fear of being killed. Eric’s fierce love of his country and his principles saw him immersing himself in the dangerous opposition politics of the day where elections were rigged, and fellow party members were tortured and murdered. Somehow Eric de Jong’s irrepressible sense of humour bubbles throughout this absorbing, honest and deeply personal account of a growing family, of love, entrepreneurial success and failure, mental illness, political exile, and the distressing and often absurd collapse of a beautiful African country and stoicism of its people.

Book Rubbing Shoulders With Two Presidents

Download or read book Rubbing Shoulders With Two Presidents written by Tom Graciano and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a memoir relating the author’s personal experiences as a free-lance journalist working in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1965 to 1972. The early part of the book describes how he met President Soekarno and became quite close to him during the last year of his presidency. Soekarno made him sit on his chair and his girl friend on his wife’s chair during a performance one night at the president’s summer palace. He told the author, “You play president tonight.” The author also met President Suharto. The president and Mrs. Suharto invited him and a colleague to have lunch with the First Family on Monkey Island, one of the Thousand Islands Group in the Jakarta Bay. Suharto himself drove the car, with his wife next to him, in which the author and his colleague were seated on the passenger seat, on the trip from the president’s residence to the Yacht Club. Then the president was at the helm of the yacht steering her to Monkey Island. These were Indonesia’s first and second heads-of-state, more often than not portrayed by the foreign media as tyrannical and corrupt. But the author got to know the warm, friendly sides of the two leaders which he narrates in the book.

Book Introduction to Quechua

Download or read book Introduction to Quechua written by Judith Noble and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general language of the former Inca Empire, Quechua is today the most widely spoken indigenous American language. It is used by over six million people in the Andean region of South America - an area that includes southern Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. Introduction to Quechua provides a uniquely accessible introduction to the language and culture of the Quechua speakers. This book is divided into three parts. Section I focuses on the spelling and pronunciation of the language. Section II consists of 494 Model Sentences in both Quechua and English, many in a helpful question-and-answer format that enables a person to communicate in situations typically encountered by the traveler. Literal translations are also included, to provide insight into the grammatical structures involved. These sentences cover a wide range of practical topics, from extending greetings and social courtesies to asking about transportation, describing things, expressing likes and dislikes, and requesting help. The models also show how to talk about time and past events and to express commands and conditional sentences. Many Model Sentences are followed by one or more Expansions to offer additional structures and/or vocabulary. Section III of the book offers important notes on the grammar of Quechua and includes model verb conjugations. This section is followed by extensive lists of practical vocabulary, going beyond the words used in the Model Sentences and their Expansions. Introduction to Quechua will prove to be an essential handbook and reference for any traveler, student, researcher, or businessperson who is interested in the Andean region and in communicating with Quechua speakers.
