Book The Road to Dutch Harbor

Download or read book The Road to Dutch Harbor written by Joe Alaska and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am used to moving to where an opportunity exists. And, I enjoy a change. Every few years I found myself in a new situation. In 2006 I left a company in which I had 15 years of experience. I was at the top of my game, making good money in a steady job. But I hated my boss. I took another position which was a gamble. After one year I realized I made a mistake. So I quit my job and put my house up for sale, just as the housing market was imploding in Phoenix. Where would I move? No idea. I started a job search in the northwest US, including Alaska. If I sold my house before I got a job, I would move to Reno. I liked the area. At the last second I got an offer in Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. Never had been to Alaska. Next thing I knew, I was driving from Phoenix to Fairbanks. Even though I knew this position was truly unique and would take patience on my part, I had had enough after a few months and quit. But once again, another offer presented itself. This time I would move halfway to Russia on The Aleutian Island chain. To Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island. Certainly THIS was going to work out!

Book Blue Latitudes

Download or read book Blue Latitudes written by Tony Horwitz and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an exhilarating tale of historic adventure, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Confederates in the Attic retraces the voyages of Captain James Cook, the Yorkshire farm boy who drew the map of the modern world Captain James Cook's three epic journeys in the 18th century were the last great voyages of discovery. His ships sailed 150,000 miles, from the Artic to the Antarctic, from Tasmania to Oregon, from Easter Island to Siberia. When Cook set off for the Pacific in 1768, a third of the globe remained blank. By the time he died in Hawaii in 1779, the map of the world was substantially complete. Tony Horwitz vividly recounts Cook's voyages and the exotic scenes the captain encountered: tropical orgies, taboo rituals, cannibal feasts, human sacrifice. He also relives Cook's adventures by following in the captain's wake to places such as Tahiti, Savage Island, and the Great Barrier Reef to discover Cook's embattled legacy in the present day. Signing on as a working crewman aboard a replica of Cook's vessel, Horwitz experiences the thrill and terror of sailing a tall ship. He also explores Cook the man: an impoverished farmboy who broke through the barriers of his class and time to become the greatest navigator in British history. By turns harrowing and hilarious, insightful and entertaining, BLUE LATITUDES brings to life a man whose voyages helped create the 'global village' we know today.

Download or read book 58 Degrees North written by Hugo Kugiya and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 2001, an industrial fishing trawler went down in the icy waters just below the Arctic Circle, with its position last recorded at 58 degrees north. The Arctic Rose sank so abruptly that there was not even time to put on survival suits or call for help, and all fifteen men aboard were killed. Hugo Kugiya's book is a powerful story of adventure and disaster, illuminating how the modern industrial fishing industry gave rise to these fifteen young men's dangerous and strangely archaic life, and tracing the Coast Guard investigation into what really sank the Arctic Rose. Hugo Kugiya has worked as a journalist for fifteen years, reporting for the Orlando Sentinel, the Seattle Times, and Newsday, among others. His 2001 series on the sinking of the Arctic Rose won Newsday's Publisher's Award. He lives in Seattle with his daughter. This is his first book. "Highly readable... the portraits of the doomed fishermen-Capt. Dave Randall, Mexican immigrant Angel Mendez (seen mostly through the eyes of his widow), amiable drifter Eddie Haynes-grip and fascinate...Bound to suck in maritime buffs."-Publishers Weekly "Kugiya ably reconstructs events and characters...a crew fit for a World War II film, all facing a cruel sea."-Hollywood Reporter "Sympathetic to the difficulties that fishermen face but not sentimental, Kugiya puts a human face on an assortment of drifters, illegal aliens, and small businessmen, all hard-working men who turned to the sea for escape or a means to a new start. An intriguing look into one of the most dangerous occupations in America."-Library Journal
