Book The Road of the Sea Horse

Download or read book The Road of the Sea Horse written by Poul Anderson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The giant Norse warrior-king Harald Hardrede strives to forge a mighty empire by conquering the North in the second volume of the epic Last Viking Trilogy He is a savior to the hordes of loyal Norsemen who would gladly give their lives battling at his side and a dreaded scourge to anyone who resists his dreams of empire. Now, Harald Hardrede—who, legend has it, has never been defeated in battle or sport—has returned to Norway, the land of his birth, after years of serving foreign rulers in faraway realms. The lessons of Constantinople are not lost on the giant Viking warrior, as he sets out to unite the northlands under his sole rule and create an empire to rival the great powers of Europe. Harald’s task will not come easily and will demand great sacrifice, for the resisting Danes love their current king, and the proud people of the Throndheimsfjord would rather die than relinquish their cherished independence. But the fabled “Lightning of the North” will not be deterred, for he is determined to carve his place in history—or die in the process. Multiple-award-winning author Poul Anderson’s thrilling three-volume series, the Last Viking Trilogy draws from Norse legend and lore to prove he is as adept at epic historical fiction as he is at science fiction and fantasy. Norway’s most glorious hero comes alive in The Road of the Sea Horse, a magnificent tale of war, adventure, bloodlust, and loyalty.

Despondent, almost bankrupt, she nabs an astonishingly well-paid job as a carer for an elderly grande dame of Lobster Cove. What could be easier? Almost anything, for a start. A heady mix of misunderstanding, folklore, suspicion, and the hand of fate unbalances Lara from the moment she steps into Lucas Dalton’s desolate mansion on the shore. How many unanswered questions can there be? For a start, is her boss, Lucas – deep-sea diver, oil-rig maintenance man, and closet architect – unhinged? Is he way out of control, or merely lost in a dark place? Where’s his wife? Why so little light, and so much shade? Bewitched, Lara falls in love with the beauty of Maine, and the inexplicably irresistible Lucas. But, is he the devoted son, widower, and father he claims to be, or someone entirely different?

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson had taken the coachman and a pair of horses, and driven away to a neighboring town, intending to make a visit of several days. Carl, their son, was to care for Silverfoot; of course that was a man's work, and he was delighted. After his parents' departure, the first thing Carl did was to take out of the stall the dear gray pony with the pink rings and black spots about his eyes, and give him a good curry-combing, hissing through his teeth in imitation of the coachman, though why the fellow did it he couldn't exactly say. Once he had asked him, and the man answered: "Oh, to soothe the pony!" The boy decided to whitewash Silverfoot's stall; how pleased Father would be on his return, to see that he had been industrious, and that everything was clean and tidy. He felt sure that the pony would appreciate it too. So Carl tied the little creature to the post in the middle of the barn, and set gayly to work. He managed to get the white stuff all over his clothes, and on his head and face as well; but what a good time he was having! At last he had finished and made everything ready for Silverfoot--but when he went to look for him, lo and behold! the pony was nowhere to be seen. There was great excitement at Silverfoot's disappearance, for the children loved this clever pony. Carl thought he must have slipped his bridle and wandered off, or perhaps he had scuttled into the woods by the side of the stable. They looked for tracks, but there were so many hoof prints in the dust it was hard to tell if there were any fresh ones. They had looked well in the barn, but he was not there. Had he been stolen? Tramps were seldom seen in that neighborhood. The letter carrier was the only person...

Book excerpt: Nem is a student of English literature at Delhi University. He drifts between classes, weed-hazy parties, and the amorous complexities of campus life, until a chance encounter with an art historian steers him into a world of pleasure and artistic discovery. Nem’s life is irrevocably transformed. One day, without warning, his mentor disappears. In the years that follow, Nem cocoons himself in South Delhi, writing for a chic cultural journal. When he is awarded a fellowship to London, a cryptic note plunges him into a search for the art historian—a search which turns into a reckoning with his past. Retelling the myth of Poseidon and his youthful male devotee Pelops, Seahorse transforms a simple coming-of-age story into an epic drama of loss, love, and healing.

Book The Road to Batemans Bay

Download or read book The Road to Batemans Bay written by Alastair Greig and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road to Batemans Bay is the story of competing ventures to create ‘the Great Southern Township’ on the South Coast of New South Wales in the early 1840s. The idea of developing the furthest reaches of settlement was linked to the hopes of southern woolgrowers for a road from their properties to the coast, over the Great Dividing Range. The township proponents dreamed that having a quicker and cheaper connection to Sydney would allow them to open a port second only to Port Jackson. The scene begins with the proposed coastal township of St Vincent, in an age of optimism: settlement is expanding, exports are growing and land prices are soaring, generating Australia’s first land boom. Before long, however, the colony experiences a catastrophic economic depression whose ‘pestilential breath’ infects those with a stake in the coastal townships. Alastair Greig follows the fate of these individuals, while also speculating on the broader fate of South Coast development during the mid-nineteenth century. Greig gives a unique insight into many aspects of colonial life—including the worlds of Sydney’s merchants, auctioneers, land speculators, surveyors, map-makers and lawyers—as well as its maritime challenges. The Road to Batemans Bay is a chronicle of how Australia first developed its land-gambling habit and how land speculation led to the road to ruin.
