Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Richard Paul Evans, the dramatic conclusion in the riveting Broken Road trilogy—a powerful redemption story about finding happiness on a pilgrimage across iconic Route 66. Chicago celebrity and pitchman Charles James is supposed to be dead. Everyone believes he was killed in a fiery plane crash, a flight he narrowly missed. But thanks to that remarkable twist of fate, he’s very much alive and ready for a second chance at life and love. Escaping death has brought Charles some clarity: the money, the fame, the expensive cars; none of it brought him true joy or peace. The last time he was truly happy was when he was married to his ex-wife Monica, before their relationship was destroyed by his ambition and greed. In this final installment of the exciting and provocative series that began with The Broken Road and The Forgotten Road, Charles is still on his pilgrimage across the iconic Route 66. He intends to finish his trek from Amarillo to Santa Monica, despite learning that his ex-wife is now planning to marry another man. With the initial reason for his trip in jeopardy, he still has lessons to learn along the way before he discovers—and arrives at—his true destination.

Book excerpt: How the men and women of Britain found 'the road home' after the Great War. From the SUNDAY TIMES bestselling author of THE LOST POST. 11am, 11.11.1918: the war is finally over. After four long years Britain welcomed her heroes home. Wives and mothers were reunited with loved ones they'd feared they'd never see again. Fathers met sons and daughters born during the war years for the very first time. It was a time of great joy - but it was also a time of enormous change. The soldiers and nurses who survived life at the Front faced the reality of rebuilding their lives in a society that had changed beyond recognition. How did the veterans readjust to civilian life? How did they cope with their war wounds, work and memories of lost comrades? And what of the people they returned to - the independent young women who were asked to give up the work they had been enjoying, the wives who had to readjust to life with men who seemed like strangers?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of my poems centre on the theme of having a positive or moral outcome. We are all the same in that we all feel emotions regardless of who we are. I have always been of the opinion to use rhyme as a simple means to express, as concisely as I can, the reasons why we feel the way that we do and perhaps the reasons why we do the things that we do. For whatever takes place in life, we are all susceptible to the same emotionsregardless of our varying experiences. In turn, it is because of what we feel and experience that make us who we are, or rather, who we have the potential to becomefor better or worse. It is my intention that my poems serve as a reminder, or conversely, serve as an additional insight into the fact that we can all rise above our circumstances. Oft times we fall short and in doing so fail to see our worth or the worth in otherseither because we fail to remember or fail to do, i.e, to remember to do what is necessary to help ourselves and to be there for others! I have sought to make these poems as insightful as I could, enough to see that we all deserve to be redeemed in one way or another!

Book excerpt: 'I had not lived in the former pit village of Lynemouth since 1961 but the winding road north from Newcastle will always be the same nostalgic highway, each twist charged with vivid memories and powerful emotions...' So begins a story full of wonderful humour, emotional candour and hardy tales of tough times - a quietly epic family saga set amid the pit villages of the North East . It stretches from the 1920s, before Sid's parents had even met, to the final closing of the mine and his mother's death in 1999. Sid paints a picture of a colourful, tight knit community full of good times and hard work, god-fearing women and hard-drinking men. Always dominating the skyline is Auld Betty, the pit head that took the men away each day and, with a prayer, brought them back each evening. Amongst the unforgettable cast of his extended family and friends, we follow the Waddells' attempts to stay afloat and provide a better future and possible escape for youngsters like Sid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you desire to know and experience God’s exhilarating journey for creation? The Bible reveals God’s magnificent plans for his dominion and most valued treasure, mankind. However, because of its many complexities, most miss the big picture of Scripture, focusing on obscure doctrinal details, and consequently are confused about their own role and God’s purposes. This book was written as a tool to assist in overcoming these difficulties by presenting the structure of the Bible through analyzing three fundamental plans of God—his original plan for mankind, which was corrupted by sin, his salvation plan that triumphed over sin, and his restoration plan that is steadily returning creation to its genesis. By first accurately examining and gaining a solid grasp of the flow of Scripture through these plans prior to delving into its many doctrinal details, one can far more effectively comprehend its essential message and the intentions of God’s heart toward his people. This book’s intended audience is not merely new believers in Christ, but also those who have been Christians for many years without yet obtaining a firm proficiency of God’s comprehensive message, necessary for healthy growth and fruitfulness. Come, then, and experience the epic revelation of God’s heart.

Book The Road Home

Download or read book The Road Home written by Ethan Nichtern and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Road Home, Ethan Nichtern, a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, investigates the journey each of us takes to find where we belong. Drawing from contemporary research on meditation and mindfulness and his experience as a Buddhist teacher and practitioner, Nichtern describes in fresh and deeply resonant terms the basic existential experience that gives rise to spiritual seeking--and also to its potentially dangerous counterpart, spiritual materialism. He reveals how our individual quests for self-awareness ripple forward into relationships, communities, and society at large. And he explains exactly how, by turning our awareness to what's happening around us and inside us, we become able to enhance our sense of connection with others and, at the same time, change for the better our individual and collective patterns of greed, apathy, and inattention.

Ria Channing ran from a tragedy of her own making six years ago, a pariah in the family and home that were once perfect…until she destroyed them. But a deathbed promise to her only friend forces her to return for the sake of the grandson her parents have never met. Homeless, hungry and worn out from fighting for survival, she carries with her no expectation of forgiveness—only heartfelt hope that the house that love built will welcome and care for her child, if not his bad seed mother. Sculptor Sandor Wolfe owes his career and his future to Ria's mother. There is nothing he wouldn't do to protect Cleo from the thankless daughter who has hurt her so deeply and now threatens the life she has rebuilt from the ashes of the old. What he doesn't expect, however, is to find a vulnerability and a courage that touch him as Ria tries to make up for all she has cost the family she destroyed. The battle is one she seems destined to lose, and Sandor finds himself torn between love and loyalty, with the stakes being his friend's broken heart and a valiant, fragile woman's survival. (A companion to The House That Love Built,a different perspective of the story seen through Ria's eyes and going beyond) "Jean Brashear's distinctive storytelling voice instantly draws in the reader. Book excerpt: In the wake of factory closings and his beloved wife's death, Lev is on his way from Eastern Europe to London, seeking work to support his mother and his little daughter. After a spell of homelessness, he finds a job in the kitchen of a posh restaurant, and a room in the house of an appealing Irishman who has also lost his family. Never mind that Lev must sleep in a bunk bed surrounded by plastic toys -- he has found a friend and shelter. However constricted his life in England remains he compensates by daydreaming of home, by having an affair with a younger restaurant worker (and dodging the attentions of other women), and by trading gossip and ambitions via cell phone with his hilarious old friend Rudi who, dreaming of the wealthy West, lives largely for his battered Chevrolet. Homesickness dogs Lev, not only for nostalgic reasons, but because he doesn't belong, body or soul, to his new country -- but can he really go home again? Rose Tremain's prodigious talents as a prose writer are on full display in The Road Home, but her novel never loses sight of what is truly important in the lives we lead.

Book excerpt: The sequel to the masterpiece All Quiet on the Western Front, The Road Back is a classic novel of the slow return of peace to Europe in the years following World War I. After four grueling years, the Great War has finally ended. Now Ernst and the few men left from his company cannot help wondering what will become of them. The town they departed as eager young men seems colder, their homes smaller, the reasons their comrades had to die even more inexplicable. For Ernst and his friends, the road back to peace is more treacherous than they ever imagined. Suffering food shortages, political unrest, and a broken heart, Ernst undergoes a crisis that teaches him what there is to live for—and what he has that no one can ever take away. “The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure.”—The New York Times Book Review
