Download or read book The Rise of the Indian Software Industry written by Markus Kutscha and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 67% (Upper second class), University of Westminster (University of Westminster (London)), course: International Trade & Finance, language: English, abstract: Today India is the second most populous country in the world, with about 1.04 billion people. Two-thirds of India’s population work in the agricultural sector and account for around 25% of GDP. The Indian indicator of human development is one of the lowest in the world, and a large fraction of the population still lives below the poverty line. Nevertheless, due to India’s liberalising reform programme and the rising economic de-velopment, the number of poor people will decline to 220.1 million by 2007 according to the Planning Commission. The World Bank estimates that India will become the fourth largest economy in the world by 2020. While increasing pressures on domestic industry will have to cope with competition from imports, liberalisation of trade will open up new opportunities for ex-port of goods. India’s service sector has already become the dominant contributor to GDP, accounting for 46 per cent of the total. NASSCOM, the Indian industry’s lobby, has stated that the country’s exports from software, other IT services and business-process-outsourcing in-dustries grew by more than 25% to $12 billion last year, of which infrastructure services accounted for just over $300m. The global market for textiles, clothing and agricultural products will expand dramati-cally, but India’s ability to export will depend on its capacity to keep pace with rising international standards of price, quality productivity and service.

Book Emergence and Growth of the Indian Software Industry

Download or read book Emergence and Growth of the Indian Software Industry written by Prasant K. Sahoo and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the evolution and changing scenario of the software industry from its inception till now and derives the patterns of the changing opportunities and challenges for the emergence and growth of this industry group. The longitudinal perspective focuses on the stages of development in the software industry, including the clear inflection points. In the early years, Indian software firms used to send people to customers' locations abroad to do development work. The primary work done by the Indian firms till the early 1990s was simple coding and testing. As time progressed, Indian software firms acquired higher skills in software development and project management. High skill levels allowed these firms to rapidly move up the value chain from simple coding to complete system design. This paper focuses on the Indian software industry and the trends of this growing industry. The factors that make India seek competitive advantage, along with the constraints and challenges faced, are also discussed. The current industry demand and supply dynamics are elaborated on a strategic level.

Book The Software Industry in Emerging Markets

Download or read book The Software Industry in Emerging Markets written by Simon Commander and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The software industry represents a unique example of a truly global industry, growing rapidly in both developed and developing countries. This important book provides the first serious study of the growth of the industry in emerging markets, with an excellent discussion of the key cases including India, China and Brazil. Simon Commander is to be congratulated producing such a timely and policy relevant book. Saul Estrin, London Business School, UK This book aims to promote an understanding of the origins and dynamics of the software industry in a number of key emerging markets Brazil, China, India and Israel, and to establish what experiences, if any, are potentially replicable in other prevailing markets. In-depth interviews with leading players in the industry are combined with other new data to provide a comparative study of the dynamics of the sector in emerging markets, to emphasise the public policy implications of these developments, and place them in a wider international context. The last 25 years have seen an explosive growth in the software industry, which is still overwhelmingly dominated by firms from North America and Europe. The authors argue that a number of companies from emerging markets have made significant headway and have even consolidated their positions on account of major cost advantages. They go on to explain the factors behind these developments, and conclude that the software industry, through its ability to project good corporate governance, its lack of hierarchy and widespread use of motivating working practices and compensation schemes, has proved a powerful example to other sectors in these emerging market economies. This book will be of immense interest to both academics and practitioners with an interest in development economics or technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Risk of India: Its Transformation from Poverty to Prosperity is an extremely interesting read. The book speaks not only to the mind and intellect but also to the heart as it clearly demonstrates that economic development is above all a question of people. It also shows that the Indian society, and particularly its youth, is much more open to changes than its political and bureaucratic class, and would welcome a third wave of reforms that would help the poor to benefit from economic progress. I strongly recommend this book. It offers a very unique and rich description of today's India from the author's perspective and many well chosen anecdotes. - Colette Mathur, Director World Economic Forum This fascinating work weaves together a set of seemingly diverse events into an intricate tapestry capturing the essence and purpose of emerging India. It is also an inspiration to people in "Challenged" economies that the power of honest entrepreneurship can bring about a greater transformation than the best intentions of any government. Well-researched and well-written, this book is a good guide for developing countries to leverage the potential of people and its inherent strengths. It also brings out the challenge for India that more reforms are necessary, not less. - Nandan M Nilekani, CEO & Managing Director Infosys Technologies Limited The Rise of India is an insightful and engaging story of India before and after the 1991 reforms. There are many academic tomes on India's reforms but none is as comprehensive, lucid, and earthy. Practicing "soft hearts, hard heads" Philosophy with anecdotes and personal experiences, the author builds a compelling case for further liberalization and reforms. This book is a must read for all policy makers, students of economics, and activists of all stripes. read, understand, and become part of the revolution-a continued rise of India! - Parth J. Shah, President, Centre for Civil Society
