Download or read book The Rise of Modern Religious Ideas Classic Reprint written by Arthur Cushman Mcgiffert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Modern Religious Ideas This volume is based upon the Earl L'ectures, given before the Pacific Theological Seminary, at Berkeley, California, in September, 1912. A number of years ago, in response to the request of Doctor James M. Whiton, I promised to write a book on the Antecedents of Modern Theology, as one of a series dealing with modern religious thought. Circumstances delayed its preparation, and, when the invitation was received to give the Earl Lectures, it seemed wise to take a kindred theme as the subject of the course. With the gracious approval, both of the seminary authorities and of the editor of the series, the present volume, which contains the sub stance of the lectures, but in a different form and considerably enlarged, appears as the first of the series on modern religious thought. Excerpt: ... chapter vii the rehabilitation of faith Toward the close of his famous essay on miracles, published in 1748, Hume remarked: "Our most holy religion is founded on faith, not on reason, and it is a sure method of exposing it to put it to such trial as it is by no means fitted to endure." The words, whatever their motive, meant a complete reversal of the common rationalistic position accepted in his day by both deists and orthodox. According to them no one should believe anything without good and adequate reasons for his belief. But Hume's remark was prophetic of the overthrow of the rationalistic school in religion and of the appearance of a new spirit and attitude which became very common in the nineteenth century. The remark reminds us of the position of Occam and other schoolmen of the late Middle Ages with their recognition of the complete divorce of reason and faith. The truths of Christianity, so they maintained, have no basis in human reason; some of them indeed are quite irrational; but they are to be accepted on the authority of the Roman Church. They might have been even more irrational than they are and yet it would be our duty to accept them if taught by the Church. In the eighteenth century, on the other hand, when Hume wrote the words quoted above, the notion of. faith's independence of reason was generally regarded as the greatest possible scandal, but it has come again into favor largely as a consequence of the sceptical development of that century. The repudiation of dependence upon reason in religious things, voiced in Hume's remark, found in the great evangelical movement of the eighteenth century its most striking and influential expression. English evangelicalism was closely connected with German pietism and...

This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progress of Religious Ideas, Through Successive Ages, Vol. 3 of 3 Whatever might have been the real origin of the story, the emperor caused a standard to be made in the form of a cross; and, according to tradition, it was an exact oop y of the one seen in his dream. The shaft was cased with gold, and it was surmounted by a golden crown, on which were inscribed a monogram, signifying the name of Christ. Beneath the crown was a small purple banner, and the bust of Constantine, which shared the homage paid by the soldiers to their consecrated standard, without necessarily bringing them under the charge of idolatry. This standard was called the Labarum, the meaning of which is now un known. It was for a long time carried at the head of the imperial army, intrusted to the care of fifty faithful guards; and a belief prevailed that no weapon could harm them While they were employed in guarding the sacred emblem. Book Faith and Modern Thought Classic Reprint

Download or read book Faith and Modern Thought Classic Reprint written by Ransom B. Welch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith and Modern Thought The occasion of this little volume may be found in the spirit of modern discussion. The title - Faith and Modern Thought - was chosen by the writer long before he knew that a similar subject - Christianity and Modern Thought - had been proposed for a course of lectures in Boston, during the winter of 1875-6. The material is composed, in part, of essays prepared for special occasions, and subsequently published in Quarterly Reviews. If, in defence of certain positions, plain words have been employed, they are in reply to plain words employed in attack. If it be questioned whether the spirit of the book is in too close sympathy with the spirit of the time, the author has no reply to make; if it be asserted, he has no apology to offer. Earnest inquiry everywhere prevails. Old theories are scrutinized; new theories are criticised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity, Vol. 1: The Rise of the Religion St Paul was a trained theologian, the writer of the Apocalypse was a layman, and this volume closes with an analysis and estimate of that remarkable work. It is the oldest and only document springing out of lay Christian enthusiasm, and Professor Wernle thinks that it represents the general lay opinion of the Church in primitive Christian times. At the bottom of this enthusiasm lay the belief that the world was rapidly coming to an end. And that the supreme duty of man was to seek salvation from the coming judgment by watchfulness and repentance. Men in such a condition of mind had no thought of setting up stable ecclesiastical forms and institutions. But these men had a new life in them - a life of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Thought and the Crisis in Belief Nobody knows so well as I the inadequacy of my equipment for this difficult task; and few can have had better reason to know how its prosecution calls down anathemas alike from defenders of the faith once delivered to the saints - for whom religion has achieved finality and from rationalists who, in their horror of the sympathetic fallacy, cherish the notion that technical research can accomplish a per fect work. These I cannot hope to conciliate, much less to convince. Time, that tries all, must be their teacher. But for such as believe that the estab lishment of Christian truth, rather than its apolo getic defence or contemptuous dismissal, is an important part of the second Reformation imposed upon us by the contemporary course of science and scholarship, I trust I have touched some things worth further reflexion. Download or read book Religious Reconstruction Classic Reprint written by M. J. Savage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Reconstruction Believing, as I do, that religion is a permanent and the supreme interest of man, I also believe that the thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns. People wish to be religious, but it is becoming more and more true that they are not willing to pay so high a price as their brains for what passes current under the name of religion. Along with the growth of knowledge, then, concerning the universe, God and man, there must go a parallel readjustment of the thought-side of the relig ious life. And this means only that God is the God of truth as well as of devoutness. He, then, shows the deepest faith in God who fearlessly faces the truth, and lets it build the temple in which he will worship.
