Download or read book Aspects of the Rise of Economic Individualism written by Hector Menteith Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of the Rise of Economic Individualism: A Criticism of Max Weber and His School This book is an attempt to provide a more realistic treatment than has been found hitherto of a topic which has of late years been widely discussed. It is an attempt to use a historical instead of a sociological method to solve historical problems. It was first written in 1928 - 9 as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Cambridge, from material mostly collected during the tenure of a research Studentship at Emmanuel College. It was written in such leisure time as I was able to afford while lecturing at the University of Leeds, and has now been revised and rewritten in leisure moments at Cape Town. Access to libraries has been a little difficult during the actual period of writing, and I am conscious that there are some gaps in my bibliography. I regret especially my non-access to certain German works and Continental periodicals. Despite this, I venture to claim that my essay does make some new contributions to the literature of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heritage of Sociology. In his superb introductory essay, Camic situates Parson's early writings in their sociointellectual and biographical context. Drawing upon extensive historical research, he identifies three overlapping but relatively distinct thematic phases in the early development of Parson's ideas: that on capitalist society and its origins, that on the historical development of the theory of action, and that on the foundations of analytical sociology. Reproducing in full each of twenty-one selections, this volume charts the changes and continuities in the early development of some of Parson's most fundamental ideas.

Book The Social Thought of Talcott Parsons

Download or read book The Social Thought of Talcott Parsons written by Uta Gerhardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Thought of Talcott Parsons offers an insightful new reading of the work of Talcott Parsons, keeping in view at once the important influences of Max Weber on his sociology and the central place occupied by methodology - which enables us to better understand the relationship between American and European social theory. Revealing American democracy and its nemesis, National Socialism in Germany as the basis of his theory of society, this book explores the debates in which Parsons was engaged throughout his life, with the Frankfurt School, C. Wright Mills and the young radicals among the "disobedient" student generation, as well as economism and utilitarianism in social theory; the opponents that Parsons confronted in the interests of humanism. In addition to revisiting Parsons' extensive oeuvre, Uta Gerhardt takes up themes in current research and theory - including social inequality, civic culture, and globalization - offering a fascinating demonstration of what the conceptual approaches of Parsons can accomplish today. Revealing methodology and the American ethos to be the cornerstones of Parsons' social thought, this book will appeal not only to those with interests in classical sociology - and who wish to fully understand what this 'classic' has to offer - but also to those who wish to make sociology answer to the problems of the society of the present.

Book Max Weber and The Protestant Ethic

Download or read book Max Weber and The Protestant Ethic written by Peter Ghosh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Weber and The Protestant Ethic: Twin Histories presents an entirely new portrait of Max Weber, one of the most prestigious social theorists in recent history, using his most famous work, The Protestant Ethic and the "Spirit" of Capitalism, as its central point of reference. It offers an intellectual biography of Weber framed along historical lines - something which has never been done before. It re-evaluates The Protestant Ethic — a text surprisingly neglected by scholars — supplying a missing intellectual and chronological centre to Weber's life and work. Peter Ghosh suggests that The Protestant Ethic is the link which unites the earlier (pre-1900) and later (post-1910) phases of his career. He offers a series of fresh perspectives on Weber's thought in various areas — charisma, capitalism, law, politics, rationality, bourgeois life, and (not least) Weber's unusual religious thinking, which was 'remote from god' yet based on close dialogue with Christian theology. This approach produces a convincing view of Max Weber as a whole; while previously the sheer breadth of his intellectual interests has caused him to be read in a fragmentary way according to a series of specialized viewpoints, this volume seeks to put him back together again as a real individual.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1947, presents the then-new subject of sociology of religion in systematic and historical theology and in the science of religion, in political theory and the social sciences, in philosophy and psychology, in philology and anthropology. Its intention is to bridge the gulf between the study of religion and the social sciences, an exercise that draws strongly upon cultural anthropology.

Book Marx and Weber on Oriental Societies

Download or read book Marx and Weber on Oriental Societies written by Lutfi Sunar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orient was central to the work of Marx and Weber, both figures building their theories around the question of why modernity appeared to emerge only in the West. While Marx’s account focused on the accumulation of capital in the West, Weber’s explanation for this phenomenon centred on Western rationalization. Extending recent work comparing the social theories of Marx and Weber, this book examines their approaches to Oriental societies, showing how, in spite of the differences in their respective theorizations of the historical and political development of the West, their work on the form of modern society in the Orient converges, each complementing the other. Fully conversant with recent scholarly work on Marx and Weber, this comprehensive re-examination of the points of convergence and departure in their work requires us to re-evaluate both their positions in the history of sociology and their relevance to contemporary social questions. As such, it will appeal to scholars of social and political theory and classical sociology.
