Book excerpt: Hector, a vile man possessed by legions of demons, trembled as he watched the gruesome demonic creature shudder while its body gyrated from the strain of syphoning the soft, delicate internal organs from its prey. The creature lifted its repugnant head and bellowed a ghastly roar as it sucked in one last drop of bloody carnage. Then it carelessly tossed the decimated carcass across the rancid swamp to land on the massive pile of broken bones, petrified skin, and excrement. Terrified but consumed with evil, Hector and his demons, slinked away from the swamp pond and began to devise a wicked plan for the small town of Ocean Breeze where he grew up. Tia Menéndez is an ordinary high school student in Ocean Breeze who suddenly finds her life turned upside down when her friends are missing after a spring break party. At the same time, Tia discovers that she is a cherub-a specialized angel that God has created and blessed with extraordinary powers. With the help of two powerful angels, Azimi and Alcander, Tia is compelled to begin a search to find her friends before something horrible happens to them. As this journey begins, Tia meets two boys: Garrett, a well-balanced Christian on fire for God, and Blaine, who spends his life in a drug-induced stupor. With Garrett and Blaine tugging at Tia's heart, the three unlikely teenagers fight a battle with Hector and his beast, demonic creatures, and angelic beings for domination of their souls.

Book Easton s Bible Dictionary

  • Author : M. G. Easton
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017-08-19
  • ISBN : 9781974694648
  • Pages : 526 pages

Download or read book Easton s Bible Dictionary written by M. G. Easton and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-19 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easton's Bible Dictionary is a classic book of definitions which serves to explain and clarify the meaning of the names, places, and words found in the Bible. Many Christians and scholars who read the Bible often remain unawares of the meanings or significance of the Holy Book's vocabulary. Such words are often derived from Ancient Hebrew or other old scripts, which makes it even more difficult for readers who only speak English to understand. Location names, in the context of ancient geography, are likewise hard to scrutinize - yet Easton's Dictionary not only explains what these places are, but their size and overall impact across the entire Bible. First published in 1893, this dictionary uses the authoritative King James Bible as its source. As well as containing definitions and accounts of the many terms found throughout the Old and New Testaments, Easton's Bible Dictionary points out the significance of certain things and exactly where mentions of such phenomena appear in the Bible. The presence and significance of iron, for example, is noted in the Books of Genesis, Chronicles, Ezekiel, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Job, Joshua, Kings and in the Psalms. Individuals in the Bible are also given biographical definitions. Through Easton's referencing of the names, we can discover the exact Bible passages where such figures are mentioned. Likewise we hear of terms relevant to the life of the ancient peoples; the term 'Levy' for instance is shown to equate to a form of involuntary recruitment which kings ordered. Words in frequent use today, such as 'Schism', are also shown to originate from the Bible. Other words we use today - such as 'Teeth', are shown to have been informal terms: 'cleanness of teeth' in Amos 4:6 denotes an outbreak of famine, for example. Many of the parables and tales of the Bible are retold in abbreviated form in Easton's Bible Dictionary. These retold anecdotes reference other relevant passages, further evidencing how the various portions of the Bible are interconnected and related to one another. Such a style also gives this unconventional dictionary a flowing quality, making it easier for the reader to enjoy large tracts of this text without pause. The ancient world of the Biblical canon is given life and color by Easton's descriptions. Primarily however, Easton's masterwork is designed for reference. Yet it not only defines the individual entries, but places these entries in their proper context throughout both the Old and New Testaments. Owing to this wealth of information, the reader may perceive that Easton's Dictionary is not merely a book of definitions, but an authoritative and significant work of classic Christian literature.

Book Gregory of Nyssa Against Eunomius

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that the wish to benefit all, and to lavish indiscriminately upon the first comer one’s own gifts, was not a thing altogether commendable, or even free from reproach in the eyes of the many; seeing that the gratuitous waste of many prepared drugs on the incurably-diseased produces no result worth caring about, either in the way of gain to the recipient, or reputation to the would-be benefactor. Rather such an attempt becomes in many cases the occasion of a change for the worse. The hopelessly-diseased and now dying patient receives only a speedier end from the more active medicines; the fierce unreasonable temper is only made worse by the kindness of the lavished pearls, as the Gospel tells us. I think it best, therefore, in accordance with the Divine command, for any one to separate the valuable from the worthless when either have to be given away, and to avoid the pain which a generous giver must receive from one who treads upon his pearl,’ and insults him by his utter want of feeling for its beauty.

Book Mary in Early Christian Faith and Devotion

Download or read book Mary in Early Christian Faith and Devotion written by Stephen J. Shoemaker and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time a noted historian of Christianity explores the full story of the emergence and development of the Marian cult in the early Christian centuries. The means by which Mary, mother of Jesus, came to prominence have long remained strangely overlooked despite, or perhaps because of, her centrality in Christian devotion. Gathering together fresh information from often neglected sources, including early liturgical texts and Dormition and Assumption apocrypha, Stephen Shoemaker reveals that Marian devotion played a far more vital role in the development of early Christian belief and practice than has been previously recognized, finding evidence that dates back to the latter half of the second century. Through extensive research, the author is able to provide a fascinating background to the hitherto inexplicable “explosion” of Marian devotion that historians and theologians have pondered for decades, offering a wide-ranging study that challenges many conventional beliefs surrounding the subject of Mary, Mother of God.
