Book Joseph Smith s Translation

  • Author : Samuel Morris Brown
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-05-04

Download or read book Joseph Smith s Translation written by Samuel Morris Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mormonism's founder, Joseph Smith, claimed to have translated ancient scriptures. He dictated an American Bible from metal plates reportedly buried by ancient Jews in a nearby hill, and produced an Egyptian "Book of Abraham" derived from funerary papyri he extracted from a collection of mummies he bought from a traveling showman. In addition, he rewrote sections of the King James Version as a "New Translation" of the Bible. Smith and his followers used the term translation to describe the genesis of these English scriptures, which remain canonical for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Whether one believes him or not, the discussion has focused on whether Smith's English texts represent literal translations of extant source documents. On closer inspection, though, Smith's translations are far more metaphysical than linguistic. In Joseph Smith's Translation, Samuel Morris Brown argues that these translations express the mystical power of language and scripture to interconnect people across barriers of space and time, especially in the developing Mormon temple liturgy. He shows that Smith was devoted to an ancient metaphysics--especially the principle of correspondence, the concept of "as above, so below"--that provided an infrastructure for bridging the human and the divine as well as for his textual interpretive projects. Joseph Smith's projects of metaphysical translation place Mormonism at the productive edge of the transitions associated with shifts toward "secular modernity." This transition into modern worldviews intensified, complexly, in nineteenth-century America. The evolving legacies of Reformation and Enlightenment were the sea in which early Mormons swam, says Brown. Smith's translations and the theology that supported them illuminate the power and vulnerability of the Mormon critique of American culture in transition. This complex critique continues to resonate and illuminate to the present day.

When the time travel program is hijacked by a mysterious entity known only as The Keeper, a team of unlikely explorers is sent on a high-stakes mission to retrieve lost artifacts from critical moments in history. Cole "Ace" Hawkins, a skilled yet reckless time pilot, leads the mission. Alongside him are Nora Steele, a brilliant but socially awkward scientist, and Cody Blake, a prankster mechanic who often finds himself in over his head, yet always manages to save the day in the most unexpected ways. Their goal is simple: navigate through dangerous rifts in time, retrieve the artifacts, and return to their original timeline. However, when their mission goes awry and they accidentally alter a major historical event, they find themselves trapped in a collapsing world—a twisted reality held together by the unstable rift they created. Book Configuring Community

Download or read book Configuring Community written by Parvati Nair and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation "The concept of community has become central to constructions of Spanish identities, since the Transition to democracy. Contemporary Spain witnesses a political, social, and economic resurgence of community, which both cuts across and is prioritized over nation. Yet, few studies of contemporary Spanish culture deal with this concept. This book aims, therefore, to fill a gap in Spanish cultural studies by providing an in-depth analysis of the intersections of theories, narratives and concepts of community identities across a broad range of media. Literature, film, music, and photography are analysed here in order to explore the diverse means by which community is imagined and constructed. This is a strongly interdisciplinary study, bringing together cultural studies and ethnography. The specific 'texts' that are analysed are located within a larger framework provided by Spain's involvement in processes of globalization. Unusual in this study, therefore, is the use of fieldwork and interview, as well as the application of the work of cultural theorists to the Spanish context." "This book, thus, extends the field of Spanish cultural studies through its original and deliberate examination of community; it is equally relevant to a more general reading public, interested in the diverse media covered here." "By the same token, this book is of relevance to scholars in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities, through its exploration and application of the ideas of theorists of modernity, space, and time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Learn to live. They wait and stalk to lie and talk as if you were a child that they had owned, as if they’d known and roamed with you a while. They sell their drugs to hordes of mugs who pay to die with ease, to hordes of thugs who pay for slugs of poisons that they’d please. To gain their weight in customers, they branch about the town to push their drugs upon the mugs who’d pay to hoof them down. They steal and leave the blind to lead; to tragic roads they’d hike upon the bleak and endless paths that shadows crawl in fright. They steal away their confidence and try to stretch, “to rake” the sun that shines out from the minds of those who do not take. To just feel tough as long as hard would be the road that’s grave; for moments view upon the feud, they take the drugs they’d crave to ruin people’s calm and peace, replaced with evil fiends; they stalk the worlds that they’d observed to rule them in their dreams. Upon the role of custom, laws are breached aboard smite—upon the realm of chances and upon the dark of night. In paths that rehabilitate and those who do not care—the sun still shines for those inclined, to live life if they dare. To learn the meaning of our lives, it’s said we’ll surely know—upon the end and when we bend to lessons that we grow. Although it’s such an easy thought to trust, we learn to live as if it’s hard to see the yard and life the sun can give.
