Book excerpt: "The Riddle of Destiny" is an interesting story about a young man named Alex who set out to answer the old Sphinx's puzzle because he was curious and liked to take risks. This story isn't just about solving a puzzle; it's about starting a trip that will change your life and explores the ideas of fate and self-reflection. Alex leaves the safety of their village, armed only with bravery, persistence, and a never-ending thirst for information, in order to find out what the Sphinx is hiding. The story does a great job of showing the different problems Alex has to solve as it goes along. As Alex moves toward awareness and personal growth, these problems, which could include physical pain or tests of his willpower, act as steppingstones instead of obstacles. Every time Alex gets past a challenge, he learns something new about the strength of the human spirit, how important choices are, and how strong it is to face your fears. It's great how the story brilliantly emphasizes the turning point where Alex answers the Sphinx's puzzle through sheer determination and knowledge. This achievement, on the other hand, tells us more about fate than just answering a question. Alex learns that fate is not a set road, but a journey that is shaped by the choices and actions we make. When Alex comes to this deep understanding, it changes his life and the lives of everyone who learns about this amazing trip. Many people heard about Alex's adventures and the lessons he learned, which gave people hope. More than just one person's success in answering the Sphinx's puzzle, Alex's story inspires others. It gives people the strength, conviction, and belief that they can change their own fates to face their fates. The book "The Riddle of Destiny" shows how determined people can be, how information can change things, and how young people are always full of life. Chapter 1: The Sphinx's Mysteries An old statue of a huge Sphinx stood in a cute little town with peaceful, green hills in the background. The unique look of this figure made it stand out from the others. That thing's eyes seemed to know things that no one else did, and its smile made you think that it was hiding something. No one in the town knew anything about the statue's background or purpose. But there was a story or tale that was talked about a lot. Some stories say that the Sphinx was hiding a very important puzzle. People thought that the answer to this question would show them their true fate. People in the town, especially the kids, found the Sphinx very interesting because it was so hard to figure out. A lot of the time, they would gather in front of the statue and stare up at its huge stone face, wondering what secrets it might hold. The children were eager to figure out the puzzle and find out what was next. In their dreams, they went on long journeys, found lost riches, and became famous people. The town was very excited about the Sphinx's puzzle. It had been a secret for as long as anyone could remember. As children grew up, they told their own children stories about the Sphinx, which were told to them by their parents. The Sphinx was an important part of the past of their village and made their home feel even more like an old friend. But it wasn't easy to figure out the Sphinx's puzzle. I think a lot of people tried to solve it to find out what secrets it held. Daring explorers, smart students, and curious locals had all tried to figure out the Sphinx's mystery, but none of them had been able to do so. As the secret grew, so did people's interest in the Sphinx. The legend behind the Sphinx's riddle taught the kids a very important lesson. But it taught them that life's mysteries aren't always meant to be answered quickly. These puzzles could make life more mysterious and interesting. They learned it's okay to want things, think about the future, and have questions. With its mysterious eyes and smile, the Sphinx was always a warning that life is full of surprises and new things to discover. Because of this, the Sphinx is still a sign of mystery, discovery, and the fact that life has so many options. The kids in the village were interested in the old statue and the story of the puzzle that could reveal their fate. The Mysterious Sphinx was more than just a statue; it was an important part of their lives, a source of fascination, and a constant reminder that around every corner lay secrets and exciting experiences. Chapter 2: The curious teen. Alex, a curious teen, lived in the same town as the mysterious Sphinx. Alex, on the other hand, wasn't happy just playing or doing the normal things that kids do. Alex was more interested in secrets and experiences. Alex was drawn to the stories about the Sphinx and the riddle that had yet to be solved. Alex was thrilled to learn about the puzzle that no one had been able to solve for a long time. It was a task that had never been met, and Alex was determined to be the one to solve the long-standing puzzle. Alex chose to take on the task, and their eyes lit up with determination. There was more at stake than just solving a puzzle. It was about showing that amazing things can be done by people of all ages. Alex waited calmly by the Sphinx for days on end. He read old books and talked to village elders in the hopes of finding a clue that no one else had. Alexander thought that there was always a way to fix things, no matter how bad they looked. Alex set out on a journey to find the answer to the Sphinx's puzzle. For the trip to go well, you had to be brave, smart, and patient. Alex showed that being interested meant more than just asking questions; it also meant looking for answers. This trip taught Alex a lot, not just about the Sphinx and the puzzle, but also about life in general. Alex learned how important it is to be persistent, smart, and believe in yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century. Eagerly studied at the highest level of intellectual society, his satirical essays and perceptive historical biographies caused him to be regarded for much of the Victorian period as a literary genius and eminent social philosopher. After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1814, he published his first scholarly work on German literature in 1824, before finding literary success with his ground-breaking history of the French Revolution in 1837. After falling from favour during the first part of the twentieth century, his work has more recently become the subject of scholarly re-examination. His introduction of German literature and philosophy into the British intellectual milieu profoundly influenced later philosophical ideas and literary studies. These volumes are reproduced from the 1896 Centenary Edition of his collected works. Volume 10 contains his social commentary Past and Present.

Book excerpt: Timeless. Beautiful. Dangerous. 1816 — the Year Without a Summer — resulted in two of literature’s most feared and beloved creations. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Doctor Polidori’s Vampyre. American biographer Rachel Walton attained international recognition for her Shelley bio, unearthing the horrific events which jolted Frankenstein and his wretch into existence on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland. What she hadn’t expected during her research was to fall in love with a man of gigantic structure, of uncommon beauty, of intriguing origin. Her research for the Polidori biography proves as startling. The publication of his Vampyre tale unearths a gothic horror that crawls from beneath the sod into London’s ballrooms, grand townhomes, and hotels; daring to invade the salons and bedchambers of the Royal family to satisfy its thirst. And despite the impossibility of her findings, Rachel must again confront the unexpected horror and consequences of true love. Digital Bundle includes the entire series: Fire on the Water: A Companion to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Origin of the Vampyre: A Companion to Doctor Polidori's Vampyre

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From monumental church mosaics to fresco wall-paintings, the medieval period produced some of the most impressive art in history. But how, in a world without the array of technology and access to materials that we now have, did artists produce such incredible works, often on an unbelievably large scale? In The Riddle of the Image, research scientist and art restorer Spike Bucklow discovers the actual materials and methods that lie behind the production of historical paintings. Examining the science of the tools and resources, as well as the techniques of medieval artists, Bucklow adds new layers to our understanding and appreciation of paintings in particular and medieval art more generally. He uses case studies—including The Wilton Diptych, one of the most popular paintings in the National Gallery in London and the altarpiece in front of which English monarchs were crowned for centuries—and analyses of these works, presenting previously unpublished technical details that shed new light on the mysteries of medieval artists. The first account to examine this subject in depth for a general audience, The Riddle of the Image is a beautifully illustrated look at the production of medieval paintings.

Book excerpt: Browning both denied and affirmed the value of biography for an understanding of literature. This book narrates the development of his controversial creative life through responses to his work by five key nineteenth-century figures: John Stuart Mill, William Charles Macready, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin and Matthew Arnold. It also relates Browning's sense of literary vocation to Victorian publishing. Browning emerges as a writer vividly engaged with contemporary assumptions, yet deeply aware of the unaccountability of writing.
