Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhopalocera of Java, Pieridae For about 28 years I lived in the Malay archipelago; nine months in Sumatra, five years in the south-western peninsula of Celebes and the rest of the time in Java: from January 1863 till August of the same year, from May 1864 till May 1869, from May 1879 till July 1888 and from January 1889 till June 1894. Most of the time that I passed in Java I lived at Batavia, but during the last two years and a half of my stay in that island also partly at Buitenzorg, both places situated in West-Java; some time also at Semarang, at Touban and at Bojonegoro in Central-Java, as well as at Kediri in East-Java, while I also visited for a shorter time other parts of the island, as the mountains of East-Java and frequently the mountains of West-Java. As far as my extensive official duties allowed me, I occupied myself all that time with the study of the fauna of the Lepidoptera in those places; hunting for, as much as possible myself, and breeding these insects on a large scale where I had settled down, while I sent out people to hunt for butterflies and caterpillars, augmenting my material for study with what they had caught as well as with that which others had the kindness to send me or with what I could obtain by purchase from other collectors of insects. Those that I collected in Celebes have since been made known in volumes XXI - XXVIII of the Tijdschrift voor Entomologie; in the same journal several publications about the Java Heterocera have appeared in volumes XLIII, XLIV, XLV and XLVII. Since a long time, however, I have also intended to work out my notes about the Java Rhopalocera; an extensive material, as well as hundreds of figures of early stages made in Java, most of which are still entirely unknown, and thousands of notes about the biology of these animals, are at my disposal for the purpose. But the great expense of such a publication has kept me back till now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhopalocera of Java: Hesperidae In the preliminary Observations prefixed to my study on the Java Pieridae, I expressed my intention to enter into a more particular discussion of various biological facts or phenomena - though, in a general way, these also concern the Rhopalocera or even the Lepidoptera - when treating of the families in which these facts or phenomena stand out more clearly, either on account of their frequent occurrence, Or because they are very obvious or particularly suitable for observations in them. Indeed, by thus uniting such discussions with the treatment of certain families, I can at the same time indicate more easily the examples with which my considerations in this respect are concerned and mostly illustrate them with figures, without which such considerations always remain obscure for many a one. Thus, in connection with the treatment of the Pieridae I discussed especially the subject of colour-evolution and the pretended tropical seasonal in uences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhopalocera of Java: Danaidae, Satyridae, Ragadidae, Elymniadae Although in working out the Rhopalocera of Java in connection with the systematic division followed by the late Mr. Snellen, the Danaidae, Satyridae, Ragadidae, and Elymniadae have been regarded as so many separate families, I would, however, in accordance with later views in this respect, include the latter two in the Satyridae, in so far as it concerns my general discussion in this introduction and, therefore, take into account only two groups, that of the Danaidae and that of the Satyridae. Both these belong to those Rhopalocera which boisduval assigned to the group suspemz' and are, therefore, fairly distinct from his group succz'nctz'; this is especially manifest in the earlier stages, not only with regard to the pupae, to which these designations have reference, but also to the larvae. The larvae of the malayo-australian Danaidae at least those of the African and American forms I am not sufficiently acquainted with are characterized by the possession of shorter or longer eshy processes, such as do not occur in the larvae of the Papilionidae and Pieridae or of the Hesperidae. It is true the most ancient forms of larvae in the genus papilio, especially the ornithoptera, do possess eshy processes but of a totally different character, being straight and rather stiff in appearance, and not in any way capable of voluntary movement as, to a certain extent, is the case in the larvae of Danaidae, evidently as a vestige of a former, much more mobile, condition. In the larvae of Satyridae spiny processes occur at the head and tail, while in those of Nymphalidae similar processes are found in various shapes on other parts, of the body but in the larvae of the families of szcccz'nclc' no trace of them can be observed. A close relationship between these two large groups, which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Synonymic Catalogue of the North American Rhopalocera Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Synonymic Catalogue of the North American Rhopalocera Classic Reprint written by Henry Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synonymic Catalogue of the North American Rhopalocera The last catalogue, that by Mr. W. H. Edwards, was published fourteen years ago, and has been out of print for some time. Since Mr. Edward's catalogue appeared, a number of important works have been published and many magazine articles. Quite a number of species have been described and life histories made known. The more important new works on the Lepidoptera have been Scudder's Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada the Bio logia centrali-americana, and the completion of the third volume of Mr. Edward's Butterflies of North America. A single line has been devoted to each reference, thus greatly aiding the eye in finding what is wanted. When a species is found outside our faunal limits its entire distribution is given. A few species have been put into the synonymy, but only in cases where it seemed well warranted. No attention has been paid to the genera, as they are in a chaotic state and will require special study by some one taking cognizance of the genera of the world therefore the genera remain practically the same as in the Edwards' catalogue. All references of import ance are included, and it is hoped the catalogue will be found accurate and prove useful. All sources of information were freely taken advantage of, and the compiler must acknowledge his indebt edness to the catalogues of Morris, Kirby, Scudder, Strecker and Edwards. Book Conservation of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in Australia

Download or read book Conservation of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in Australia written by Donald P.A. Sands and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of one the longest insect conservation campaigns in Australia deals with recovery of one of the most iconic endemic butterflies, the Richmond birdwing, threatened by clearance and fragmentation of subtropical rainforest in eastern Australia and the spread of an alien larval food-plant. Its conservation has involved many aspects of community involvement, developed over more than 20 years, and focused on habitat restoration and weed eradication, in conjunction with conservation of remaining forest fragments. The work has involved the entire historical range of the butterfly, addressed threats and emphasised landscape connectivity, and has enhanced recovery through extensive plantings of native food plants. Interest has been maintained through extensive publicity, community education and media activity, and the programme has provided many lessons for advancing insect conservation practice in the region.

Book The Butterflies of Hispaniola

Download or read book The Butterflies of Hispaniola written by Albert Schwartz and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 1989 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wealth of field data and ecological information.... Schwartz knows the island and its butterflies better than anyone else alive.... The scholarship is beyond reproach."--Lee D. Miller, curator, Allyn Museum of Entomology, Florida Museum of Natural History The butterflies of the Greater Antilles island of Hispaniola have in general been overlooked since Hall's 1925 summary, a situation Albert Schwartz remedies with this thoroughgoing study. Hispaniola, composed of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, paleogeographically the most interesting of the Antilles, has a topography so ideal for butterflies that nearly two hundred species live there, including sixty endemic species--more than on all the other islands combined. Schwartz's is the first major attempt to uncover the ecological and biogeographic reasons for this diversity. The book contains detailed information on natural history, ecology, taxonomy, elevational distribution, food plants used by adults, and seasonality, as well as occurrence on satellite islands. Schwartz accompanies his species accounts and analyses with photographs of selected ecologies and detailed distribution maps for each species, making this a reference for the general collector to areas that need further research. His descriptive keys, in Spanish and English, list 212 couplets. Besides its obvious value to lepidopterists, this book will fill a need for students on any aspect of West Indian fauna. Albert Schwartz, a professor emeritus of biology at Miami-Dade Community College, is an adjunct curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History and a research associate at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of Natural History, and the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural in Santo Domingo. He has written and coauthored numerous studies on Caribbean amphibians, reptiles, and Lepidoptera.
