Book excerpt: 'Moral character, so to say, constitutes the most effective means of proof.' In ancient Greece, rhetoric was at the centre of public life. Many writers attempted to provide manuals to help improve debating skills, but it was not until Aristotle produced The Art of Rhetoric in the 4th century bc that the subject had a true masterpiece. As he considered the role of emotion, reason, and morality in speech, Aristotle created essential guidelines for argument and prose style that would influence writers for more than two millennia. Brilliantly explained and carefully reasoned, The Art of Rhetoric remains as relevant today as it was in the assemblies of ancient Athens.

Book Aristotle s Art of Rhetoric

Download or read book Aristotle s Art of Rhetoric written by Aristotle and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “singularly accurate, readable, and elegant translation [of] this much-neglected foundational text of political philosophy” (Peter Ahrensdorf, Davidson College). For more than two thousand years, Aristotle’s“Art of Rhetoric” has shaped thought on the theory and practice of persuasive speech. In three sections, Aristotle defines three kinds of rhetoric (deliberative, judicial, and epideictic); discusses three rhetorical modes of persuasion; and describes the diction, style, and necessary parts of a successful speech. Throughout, Aristotle defends rhetoric as an art and a crucial tool for deliberative politics while also recognizing its capacity to be misused by unscrupulous politicians to mislead or illegitimately persuade others. Here Robert C. Bartlett offers an authoritative yet accessible new translation of Aristotle’s “Art of Rhetoric,” one that takes into account important alternatives in the manuscript and is fully annotated to explain historical, literary, and other allusions. Bartlett’s translation is also accompanied by an outline of the argument of each book; copious indexes, including subjects, proper names, and literary citations; a glossary of key terms; and a substantial interpretive essay.

Book Aristotle s Rhetoric in the East

Download or read book Aristotle s Rhetoric in the East written by Uwe Vagelpohl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two centuries following the rise of the Abbasid caliphate in 750 witnessed a wave of translations from Greek into Syriac and Arabic. The translation and reception of Aristotle's Rhetoric is a prime example for the resulting transformation of antique learning in the Islamic world and beyond. On the basis of a close textual analysis of the Rhetoric, this study develops elements of a comparative “translation grammar” of Greek-Arabic translations. Contextualizing the analysis with an account of the textual history and the Syriac and Arabic philosophical tradition drawing on theRhetoric, it throws new light on the inner workings of the “translation movement” and its impact on Islamic culture.

Book Rhetoric

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aristotle
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2013-01-24
  • ISBN : 162558590X
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Rhetoric written by Aristotle and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric is the counterpart of Dialectic. Both alike are concerned with such things that come, more or less, within the general ken of all men and belong to no definite science. Accordingly all men make use, more or less, of both; for, to a certain extent, all men attempt to discuss statements and to maintain them, to defend themselves, and to attack others. Ordinary people do this either at random or through practice and from acquired habit. Both ways being possible, the subject can plainly be handled systematically, for it is possible to inquire the reason why some speakers succeed through practice and others spontaneously; everyone will at once agree that such an inquiry is the function of an art.

Book Logic and Aristotle s Rhetoric and Poetics in Medieval Arabic Philosophy

Download or read book Logic and Aristotle s Rhetoric and Poetics in Medieval Arabic Philosophy written by Black and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a widespread, and often misunderstood, doctrine within the medieval Aristotelian tradition, namely the inclusion of Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics within the scope of the Organon. It studies this doctrine, as presented by the Islamic philosophers Al- Fārābī, Avicenna, and Averroes, from a purely philosophical perspective, and argues that the logical construal of the arts of rhetoric and poetics is both interesting and illuminating. The book begins by examining some prevalent misconceptions regarding the logical interpretation of the Rhetoric and Poetics. Chapter two considers the Greek background of the doctrine, first through an examination of the Aristotelian divisions of the sciences, and then through an examination of the beginnings of the logical classification of the Rhetoric and Poetics among the Greek commentators from the school of Alexandria. The remainder of the work is devoted to a detailed consideration of the Arabic philosophers' development of the doctrine, both their understanding of its general epistemological and logical underpinnings, and their elaboration of the specific logical structures upon which poetical and rhetorical discourse is based. Consideration is also given to the relationship between contemporary philosophical views of rhetoric and poetics, and the views of these medieval authors.
