Book excerpt: It’s 1999 and Harry Jackson has hit rock bottom. He dropped out of high school at seventeen to marry his pregnant girlfriend, Linda. Fifteen years later, he’s an alcoholic and a pot head who ignores his lonely mother and would rather spend time at Bruno’s, his favourite watering hole, than with his wife and kid. Fired from his menial job at the post office, Harry goes on a bender and crashes his son’s science fair, waking up the next morning to find that his family has left him for good. Harry heads to Bruno’s and pours his heart out to the bartender, Ben, who zaps him with a mysterious object. He wakes up in 1983, seventeen again and with his whole life ahead of him. Convinced he can do it right this time, Harry cleans up his act, throwing himself into homework, mending his relationship with his mom, and ignoring Linda’s advances. But soon, tragedy strikes, and Harry realizes that no matter how much he’s learned from the past, he still can’t control the future. Full of heart, humour, and surprising twists, this coming-of-age story asks the age-old question, “What if you could go back and do it all over again?”

Book Contemporary Radical Film Culture

Download or read book Contemporary Radical Film Culture written by Steve Presence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising essays from some of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field, this is the first book to investigate twenty-first century radical film practices across production, distribution and exhibition at a global level. This book explores global radical film culture in all its geographic, political and aesthetic diversity. It is inspired by the work of the Radical Film Network (RFN), an organisation established in 2013 to support the growth and sustainability of politically engaged film culture around the world. Since then, the RFN has grown rapidly, and now consists of almost 200 organisations across four continents, from artists’ studios and production collectives to archives, distributors and film festivals. With this foundation, the book engages with contemporary radical film cultures in Africa, Asia, China, Europe, the Middle East as well as North and South America, and connects key historical moments and traditions with the present day. Topics covered include artists’ film and video, curation, documentary, feminist and queer film cultures, film festivals and screening practices, network-building, policy interventions and video-activism. For students, researchers and practitioners, this fascinating and wide-ranging book sheds new light on the political potential of the moving image and represents the activists and organisations pushing radical film forward in new and exciting directions. Book AeroMACS

Download or read book AeroMACS written by Behnam Kamali and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering textbook on the comprehensive description of AeroMACS technology. It also presents the process of developing a new technology based on an established standard, in this case IEEE802.16 standards suite. The text introduces readers to the field of airport surface communications systems and provides them with comprehensive coverage of one the key components of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen); i.e., AeroMACS. It begins with a critical review of the legacy aeronautical communications system and a discussion of the impetus behind its replacement with network-centric digital technologies. It then describes wireless mobile channel characteristics in general, and focuses on the airport surface channel over the 5GHz band. This is followed by an extensive coverage of major features of IEEE 802.16-2009 Physical Layer (PHY)and Medium Access Control (MAC) Sublayer. The text then provides a comprehensive coverage of the AeroMACS standardization process, from technology selection to network deployment. AeroMACS is then explored as a short-range high-data-throughput broadband wireless communications system, with concentration on the AeroMACS PHY layer and MAC sublayer main features, followed by making a strong case in favor of the IEEE 802.16j Amendment as the foundational standard for AeroMACS networks. AeroMACS: An IEEE 802.16 Standard-Based Technology for the Next Generation of Air Transportation Systems covers topics such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), coded OFDMA, scalable OFDMA, Adaptive Modulation-Coding (AMC), Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, Error Control Coding (ECC) and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) techniques, Time Division Duplexing (TDD), Inter-Application Interference (IAI), and so on. It also looks at future trends and developments of AeroMACS networks as they are deployed across the world, focusing on concepts that may be applied to improve the future capacity. In addition, this text: Discusses the challenges posed by complexities of airport radio channels as well as those pertaining to broadband transmissions Examines physical layer (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) sublayer protocols and signal processing techniques of AeroMACS inherited from IEEE 802.16 standard and WiMAX networks Compares AeroMACS and how it relates to IEEE 802.16 Standard-Based WiMAX AeroMACS: An IEEE 802.16 Standard-Based Technology for the Next Generation of Air Transportation Systems will appeal to engineers and technical professionals involved in the research and development of AeroMACS, technical staffers of government agencies in aviation sectors, and graduate students interested in standard-based wireless networking analysis, design, and development.

This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital art challenges archiving, collecting and preserving methods within and outside of gallery, library, archive and museum (GLAM) institutions. By its media, art in the digital sphere is processual, contextual, modular and ephemeral, and its creative process is collaborative. From artists, scholars, technicians and conservators—to preserve this contemporary art is a transdisciplinary task. This book brings together leading international experts from digital art theory and preservation, digital humanities, collection management, conservation and media art histories. In a transdisciplinary approach, theoretic and practice-based research from these stakeholders in art, research, education and exhibition are presented to create an overview of present preservation methods and discuss demands and opportunities for the future. Finally, the need for a new appropriate museum and archive infrastructure is shown to preserve the art of our time.

Book Mobile Lightweight Wireless Systems

Download or read book Mobile Lightweight Wireless Systems written by Fabrizio Granelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First International Conference on Mobile Lightweight Systems (MOBILIGHT) was held in Athens during May 18–20, 2009. The decision to organize a scientific event on wireless communications, where competition is really enormous, was motivated by discussions with some colleagues about the current unprecedented request for lightweight, wireless communication devices with high usability and performance able to support added-value services in a highly mobile environment. Such devices follow the user everywhere he/she goes (at work, at home, while travelling, in a classroom, etc.), but also result in exciting - search, development and business opportunities. Such a scenario clearly demands significant upgrades to the existing communi- tion paradigm in terms of infrastructure, devices and services to support the anytime, anywhere, any device philosophy, introducing novel and fast-evolving requirements and expectations on research and development in the field of information and com- nication technologies. The core issue is to support the desire of wireless users to have 24/7 network availability and transparent access to "their own" services.

Book Studies in Contemporary Journalism and Communication in Russia s Provinces

Download or read book Studies in Contemporary Journalism and Communication in Russia s Provinces written by Greg Simons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the contemporary communicational practices of journalists and media outlets and the consumption and reception patterns of audiences in Russia’s provinces with an emphasis on the intergenerational transmission of culture and memory. Investigating the interaction and issues of contemporary identity, culture, audiences and journalism in a rapidly changing and evolving Russia, this volume goes beyond the large metropolitan centres into the provincial regions of Russia to develop a more comprehensive overview. Despite a popular image that is often projected of Russia as a homogeneous, often threatening entity, its regions are very far from being uniform, with diverse, varied geographies, ethnicities, religions, cultures, resources and economic infrastructure. The perspectives offered by a range of scholars and practitioners explore the generational, political and regional diversities that exist across this vast country and analyse local and regional media. Covering topics not often discussed, this volume offers an important contribution for everyone interested in Russian politics, culture, journalism and history and the study of local and regional communication studies.
