Book The Renewal of Ourselves and Our World

Download or read book The Renewal of Ourselves and Our World written by Samuel Widmer Nicolet and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty letters, thirteen of which appeared during Samuel Widmer's lifetime and eleven after his death, were published with a foreword, summarising the basic work of self-knowledge. They also summarise Samuel's literary activities of the past years on the subject of self-knowledge in a concise work. Samuel wrote: Should not the most important and fundamental concerns of such a movement be addressed in a collection of such letters over time? Shouldn't its goals and its tools for achieving these goals be outlined in more detail and anew? And do these goals not simply consist in the renewal of ourselves and our world, which we hope to achieve with the tool of self-knowledge? Have we not come to make the earth a paradise? Is this not our real goal? Are we not part of the movement that intends such a thing, dreams such a thing? We are not really forming a movement. That would be something organised, something created and produced by thoughts, by the ego. We are part of the movement that is led by love. We have awakened to this fundamental movement in the universe. The goal of this force, if it can be described as a goal at all, is renewal. The renewal of us humans and thus of our world. It is love that makes everything new again and again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal renewal or sanctification belongs to the heart of the Christian life and is becoming more important in our present-day culture. Listening to Scripture and in conversation with a variety of theologians from the protestant tradition, the author presents an up-to-date concept for a theology of personal renewal. In this concept the spiritual union with Christ (unio mystica cum Christo) is taken as the starting point in order to consider the way in which renewal obtains form in relation to God, our neighbour, ourselves and the world. To place this concept into a historical perspective, van Vlastuin begins his study with an investigation of Luther and Calvin's theology concerning the relationship between the union with Christ and personal renewal. The concept is developed within the current theological debate, with particular reference to the eschatological character of the Christian life.An important issue concerns the measure of renewal, especially in relation to the sinful heart of the believer. In this context the author also deals with the question of sanctification as a position or a process, and the relation between the two.In addition the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the human soul in the process of renewal is discussed. Another important issue concerns the abiding significance of the law and the way in which it functions in the Christian life. The exploration of several theological positions leads to a modern concept by which to understand law.The study concludes with an investigation of the relationship between the eschatological Christian life in this present life and the complete revelation of the eschaton.

Download or read book Changing Ourselves written by Kent Hodge and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kent Hodge draws on nearly 30 years experience in Missions and church growth in this radical new book about how to live like Jesus both in times of persecution and in an indifferent Western world of moral decay. Its radical because its so simple. We dont belong in camps and we do need to cross bridges. In fact we need to build the bridges between the camps of differing opinion and practice in the church, to search out again the simple truths that Jesus lived before the recorders of the Gospels. Did Jesus really mean what he said in the Sermon on the Mount? How do we do that? In Northern Nigeria, where the church has suffered bombings, burnings, midnight attacks on the homes of Christians, only a return to the simple gospel has shown us how to respond. The chapters of this book are illustrated with life stories, the stories and experiences of friends and co-workers living and overcoming in tough times. Its simple and it makes sense, but is incredibly challenging. When you read what Jesus said in the Gospels you dont get the impression that faith is some kind of escape clause to heaven. This book studies anew how the church goes about renewing the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only stability possible is stability in motion.”—John William Gardner In his classic treatise Self-Renewal, John W. Gardner examines why great societies thrive and die. He argues that it is dynamism, not decay, that is dramatically altering the landscape of American society. The twentieth century has brought about change more rapidly than any previous era, and with that came advancements, challenges, and often destruction. Gardner cautions that “a society must court the kinds of change that will enrich and strengthen it, rather than the kind of change that will fragment and destroy it.” A society’s ability to renew itself hinges upon its individuals. Gardner reasons that it is the waning of the heart and spirit—not a lack of material might—that threatens American society. Young countries, businesses, and humans have several key commonalities: they are flexible, eager, open, curious, unafraid, and willing to take risks. These conditions lead to success. However, as time passes, so too comes complacency, apathy, and rigidity, causing motivation to plummet. It is at this junction that great civilizations fall, businesses go bankrupt, and life stagnates. Gardner asserts that the individual’s role in social renewal requires each person to face and look beyond imminent threats. Ultimately, we need a vision that there is something worth saving. Through this vision, Gardner argues, society will begin to renew itself, not permanently, but past its average lifespan, and it will at once become enriched and rejuvenated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity is in trouble and it's not looking good for our future. The way we use our minds has caused untold damage through personal anxiety, national disruption, and the threat of global annihilation. This book reveals how we innocently misuse our thinking to create emotional and behavioural instability and how to interrupt dysfunctional patterns and experience a higher quality of thought. We explore how present-day spiritually based psychology is re-aligning with ancient biblical principles, providing an opportunity for everyone to participate in change from the inside-out. Unboxing this ancient wisdom reveals that there has always been two conflicting routes to enlightenment operating in our world, both promising a life beyond the material realm, so discernment is required, and this is where the renewed mind will be our guide. To understand the source of these routes and the invisible forces behind them we journey back to the very dawn of the human era, to the first moment humans were offered the choice between spiritual life or death. Back then we made the wrong choice resulting in spiritual isolation and the need to develop a mind suited to self-survival, but the way is still open for redemption and the choice of life or death for all humanity is one for the ages. We each have freedom to choose. It's not too late for renewal of the mind....and the heart and the soul of humanity.

Book Renew Principles of Change for a Better Life

Download or read book Renew Principles of Change for a Better Life written by Bryan Hudson and published by Vision Books & Media. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RENEW is a devotional book about personal change. We want to change for the better and change in ways that honor God and empower us to get the most out of life and benefit others. Here is a foundational Scripture that we will consider on several occasions. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2) Transformation is the process of growth, maturity, and positive change. Becoming a Christian was the foundation and beginning of a life of growing and changing. Someone can build an airplane and put a pilot uniform on a person, but until that person is trained, learns how to control the airplane, and takes the controls, he cannot be certified as a pilot. A Christian is more than a title, surroundings, and a "uniform." Jesus called us disciples, which means "students" or "learners." This is the attitude we should adopt. Learning produces the best kind of change. According to what Paul wrote, we are "transformed" or changed by what happens in the mind. Specifically, we want to experience a change in thinking and understanding that helps align ourselves with God and with the best experiences of life. This devotional book will focus on the mind in light of the benefits of renewal and higher thinking. The change that produces the greatest personal progress and the change people will see, is the change that happens in your mind. As Paul said, transformation happens when the mind is "renewed." This devotional book shares the biblical and practical principles for change that empowers a better life for yourself and others! Each daily lesson is followed by a Reflection Question and a challenge to commit to an action item for the day. _________ TABLE OF CONTENTS Day 1 What is the Mind? Book Christian Faith Renewed

Download or read book Christian Faith Renewed written by David K Ewen and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Isn't the renewal of Christian faith truly an awakening of the heart, a journey where we find ourselves asking God to breathe new life into our spirits, creating in us clean hearts and renewing our spirits within us as Psalm 51:10 urges? How profound is it that this spiritual reawakening enables us to view the world through a new lens, where our priorities shift, and the temporary fades away, leaving us to focus on the eternal as described in 2nd Corinthians 4:18? Isn't it like waking up to a new dawn where our hearts are wide open to God's love, guiding us to live with compassion, forgive more readily, and spread kindness in our daily lives? How transformative is this journey, continuously seeking God's presence, letting Him guide our path, and experiencing the growth, discovery, and deeper sense of joy and peace that comes from this closer, more loving relationship with God and those around us? In the journey of faith, there comes a moment that can only be described as a renewal, a profound transformation akin to awakening from a deep slumber. This is the essence of "Christian Faith Renewed: Awakening of the Heart," beautifully encapsulated in the scripture 2nd Corinthians 5:17, where it's declared that anyone in Christ is a new creation, with the old life fading away and a new life beginning. This journey is not just about rediscovering faith; it's about experiencing it in a more profound, life-altering way. Imagine walking through life with a heart not fully aware of its need for something more, something deeper. Then, suddenly, there's a stirring, a realization that the path one has been treading is not as fulfilling as it seemed. This is the first step towards renewal-acknowledging that one's spiritual life has grown stagnant or distant from God. What follows is a heartfelt repentance, a turning away from past misdeeds and a sincere seeking of forgiveness. This act of reconciliation is not merely about saying sorry; it's about changing direction, aiming towards a life illuminated by God's presence. As this transformation unfolds, there's an unmistakable sense of becoming a new creation. The heavy cloak of the past is lifted, replaced by a new self that thrives under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This renewed self begins to see the world differently, valuing love, service, and obedience to God above all else. It's a rebirth that invigorates the believer's actions, thoughts, and desires, steering them towards a path that mirrors Christ's love and teachings. Living out this renewed faith becomes an active, daily endeavor. It's no longer enough to merely claim belief; one must demonstrate it through acts of kindness, generosity, and commitment to God's word. This is the essence of awakening the heart-a realization that faith is not a passive state but a dynamic journey of continuous growth, fueled by prayer, Scripture, fellowship, and witnessing to others. This understanding of renewal and awakening is not a linear path but a cycle of growth, challenges, and rediscovery. Each believer's journey is unique, yet all share the common goal of deepening their connection with God and living out a faith that is vibrant, transformative, and alive. In this process, the heart awakens to the boundless love and grace of God, propelling the believer towards a life that truly reflects the principles of the Christian faith. About the Author Dr. David K. Ewen is someone who truly stands out because of how caring and dedicated he is. He's not just an ordinary minister; he's a source of hope for a lot of people looking for spiritual help and guidance. Whether it's individuals, couples, or entire families, Dr. Ewen is there for them, showing that faith can really make a difference in their lives.

Download or read book There Must Be More Than This written by Daniel Schwindt and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As millennials we stand accused--of aimlessness, entitlement, indifference, lack of gratitude--merely for existing under the wrong conditions, for illustrating simply by that fact the wrongness of those conditions. This book offers an apologia for an entire generation. It is not so much a solution to our problems as an orientation allowing us to face them. It provides a way of understanding ourselves, leading us to see what our increasingly economic mode of being has lopped off and discarded. We have inherited a deformed anthropology, an inane status quo, for which we have been told we ought to be thankful. We need to rediscover meaning in a world that has become a matter of indifference to us. It will take work, it won't be easy, and it will have to start with our generation. "A provocative re-orientation to the spirit and outlook of millennials; a testimony of faith from a generation not supposed to have any."--NATHAN SCHNEIDER, journalist and author of Thank You, Anarchy: Notes from the Occupy Apocalypse "Daniel Schwindt is one of those very unusual 'young voices' whose writing calls up very old questions: Why is our freedom in fact a form of exile? Why has the very concept of adulthood become meaningless? Why have our schools become 'our mental cancer'? Both radical and mindful of the radical nature of tradition, these short essays set off fireworks that signal the debut of a remarkable young social critic."--ELIAS CRIM, founder and publisher, Solidarity Hall "Daniel Schwindt has demonstrated with incisive clarity and sobriety that a spiritual life is a real life. He does not flatter, cajole, or seduce the reader; neither does he treat him or her to the fruits of his subjective impressions. He knows that the world is hard, that time is short, that we have all been disinherited, but that there is nonetheless a clear way to proceed. Solid, relevant, perceptive, uncompromising, compassionate without sentimentality, not a word out of place."--CHARLES UPTON, author of The System of Antichrist: Truth and Falsehood in Postmodernism and the New Age "Daniel Schwindt in a very brief book has produced a very powerful message. With an economy of expression that is nearly aphoristic, he has constructed a work that simultaneously grabs our hearts and our intellects. His words penetrate the web of lies that largely comprises modern life, as in brief but eloquent prose he deconstructs many of the shibboleths of the modern world, thereby clearing a path to the heart of our predicament. And, having shown us how we got there, he then suggests the way out. I hope that every member of Daniel's generation will read this book. And every member of my own as well."--JOHN C. MÉDAILLE, author of Toward a Truly Free Market: A Distributist Perspective on the Role of Government, Taxes, Health Care, Deficits, and More "In There Must Be More Than This, Daniel Schwindt gives utterance to the previously unarticulated existential ennui that plagues the so-called 'millennial' generation. Like a true doctor of souls, he diagnoses the various spiritual diseases afflicting it: affluence and its accompanying spiritual desolation; disillusionment with the hollow reality of the 'American dream'; the failure of religious, cultural, and political traditions to live up to their promises of a truly authentic engagement with life; and the technological colonization of the human person. In short, Schwindt describes with penetrating insight the 'existential self-centeredness' characteristic of postmodern existence, which results in a 'verbal universe' void of meaning and significance. But he is not without hope. He proposes an alternative, calling us to deep engagement with the cosmological reality of all that is, and the spiritual renewal that accompanies it."--MICHAEL MARTIN, author of The Submerged Reality: Sophiology and the Turn to a Poetic Metaphysics

Download or read book Ourselves the World and God written by Neal Kentch and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-27 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key to the renewal of churches and congregations is the renewal of the church's language and message. The church must be able to say something powerfully true with its language and beliefs. It must be able to say something powerfully true about our experience of ourselves as human beings in our relations to the world and to God. The author of this book shows how the church's language and beliefs can be used to do just that by actually doing it. In the pages of this book, he offers a "reading" of some Christian beliefs about God, the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit and a "reading" of our experience of ourselves in the world and before God. Using Genesis 1 and the Book of Job, the author shows how we meet God in all things. Using the Gospel of Mark, he shows how we meet the Son of God in all people. Beliefs about the Holy Spirit are used to talk about our relationship with God in which God is an active partner shaping who we are. In the final chapter, the author writes about how his use of Christian language and beliefs renewed the life of a church he served and renewed the lives of those who found their way to that church. In the pages of this book the reader will find different but compelling takes on traditional Christian beliefs. The author has taken very seriously two aspects of our experience that perplex people's minds these days when they consider religion and Christian beliefs: human experience of undeserved suffering and scientific descriptions of our world. What can be said about undeserved suffering with Christian language? And what can be said about the value of human life when scientific descriptions of our world and of the cosmos make us feel very small and insignificant? The book is written so that most anyone can read it; one need not be a theologian or a student of religion or even have much of a religious background. The book is enlivened with stories and descriptions of incidents that illustrate and enhance the chapters.

Book excerpt: What we can do to improve the lives of those around us. Our personal example -- in every aspect of our lives -- is a very powerful instrument of change, more powerful than many of us realize. Renewal is a little book of hope, to lift our spirits and give us courage when we're facing problems, and to offer gentle, sometimes surprising answers to the question "But what can I do?" Easwaran is one of the twentieth century's great spiritual teachers and an authentic guide to timeless wisdom. In these short readings on themes such as loving relationships, raising children, living simply, and aging wisely, he presents fresh insights to reveal our fundamental interconnectedness, our unity with all life. This collection includes inspiration from Gandhi and the world's saints, engaging anecdotes, and practical suggestions, all of which are accessible to readers of any faith, philosophy, or lifestyle. Together, they demonstrate that small daily efforts to improve our own lives and the lives of those around us can add up to a powerful force for renewal -- for ourselves and for our world.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book World as Lover World as Self 30th Anniversary Edition

Download or read book World as Lover World as Self 30th Anniversary Edition written by Joanna Macy and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of Joanna Macy's innovative work combines deep ecology, general systems theory, and the Buddha's teachings on interdependent co-arising. A blueprint for social change, World as Lover, World as Self shows how we can reverse the destructive attitudes that threaten our world, with concrete suggestions on how to address "An Inconvenient Truth". The essays are based on the Buddha's teachings of "Paticca samuppada" (interdependent co-arising). Reduced to deceptively simple terms this says that everything in the world- every object, feeling, emotion, and action is influenced by a huge, all-inclusive web of factors. Any change in the condition of any one thing in this web affects everything else by virtue of interconnectedness. It makes World as Lover World as Self a quintessential guide for those readers who want to integrate their Buddhist practice with concerns for social issues like global warming. It also breaches the dualities that have haunted much of both Eastern and Western thought, namely the dichotomies between mind/body, humanity/nature, reason/emotion, self/world, science/spirituality. The premise is that self-centeredness, and modern individualisms are ultimately destructive for the environment. We are not individuals separate from the world. Instead we are always "co-arising" or co-creating the world, and we cannot escape the consequence of what we do to the environment. Joanna Macy presents a re-focusing on the beauty of the natural world as personally nourishing and replenishment as one way to move away from our self-centeredness. For this revised edition the author will be adding some chapters as well as removing others. The new ones will deal largely with her new work around the "Great Turning" that will add a somewhat more visionary, future-oriented, and strategic dimension to the book. World as Lover, World as Self shows us how to realize that the earth is an extension of ourselves and how to discover the knowledge, authority and courage to respond creatively to the crises of our time. Foreword Thich Nhat Hanh

Book excerpt: We hear it said and preached constantly to live like Jesus, to be like Jesus. We are challenged to live for Jesus and not be conformed to the ways of the world. But, what does it really mean to live in such a way? What does it mean to serve God through Jesus Christ? If you think it is moral living only, you'd be wrong. If you think it's doing good deeds alone, you'd be wrong. Maybe you truly do not know what it means to live like Jesus, to be like Jesus. RETURN TO JESUS: A Vision of Self-Giving Love, will teach you to live as Christ lived and to be like Christ! It is a call to renewal for the Christian church and to enhance your daily walk in Christ. It will take you on a journey through the scripture and give you the tools to live in the -self-giving love- which Jesus lived and taught. Unlike many other books on love, RETURN TO JESUS sets forth a scripture foundation and basis for following Jesus in living a life of -agape- or -self-giving- love-. It also chronicles the author's journey to this realization of truth that was there in scripture all along. The reader will come to see that love is not just a word to be bandied about, but is -agape-. This is the -self-giving love- which Jesus not only lived and taught, but is the basis for all God's laws and messages from scripture. There will be renewed vision as you begin to understand the purpose that our Heavenly Father desired for your life from the beginning. Thus, you will become a more effective witness for Jesus as you learn to live your life as he did. RETURN TO JESUS will teach you the fullness of the -agape- message and will forever change your view of what it means to be a Christian. For some, it will be an affirmation of something that has been stirring in their Spirit, which they have not been able to fully understand or put into words. For others, it will be a completely different understanding of walking daily in Christ. For everyone who receives and begins to live out this message, their life in Christ will never be the same. Below is an excerpt from the book that will give you an idea of the message which lies within.
