Book The North Carolina Gazetteer 2nd Ed

Download or read book The North Carolina Gazetteer 2nd Ed written by William S. Powell and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina Gazetteer first appeared to wide acclaim in 1968 and has remained an essential reference for anyone with a serious interest in the Tar Heel State, from historians to journalists, from creative writers to urban planners, from backpackers to armchair travelers. This revised and expanded edition adds approximately 1,200 new entries, bringing to nearly 21,000 the number of North Carolina cities, towns, crossroads, waterways, mountains, and other places identified here. The stories attached to place names are at the core of the book and the reason why it has stood the test of time. Some recall faraway places: Bombay, Shanghai, Moscow, Berlin. Others paint the locality as a little piece of heaven on earth: Bliss, Splendor, Sweet Home. In many cases the name derivations are unusual, sometimes wildly so: Cat Square, Huggins Hell, Tater Hill, Whynot. Telling us much about our own history in these snapshot histories of particular locales, The North Carolina Gazetteer provides an engaging, authoritative, and fully updated reference to place names from all corners of the Tar Heel State.

Book Manhattan to Minisink

Download or read book Manhattan to Minisink written by Robert S. Grumet and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drivers exiting the New Jersey Turnpike for Perth Amboy, and map readers marveling at all the places in Pennsylvania named Lackawanna, need no longer wonder how these names originated. Manhattan to Minisink provides the histories of more than five hundred place names in the Greater New York area, including the five boroughs, western Long Island, the New York counties north of the city, and parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Robert S. Grumet, a leading ethnohistorian specializing in the region’s Indian peoples, draws on his meticulous research and deep knowledge to determine the origins of Native, and Native-sounding, place names. Grumet divides his encyclopedic entries into two parts. The first comprises an alphabetical listing of nearly 340 Indian place names preserved in colonial records, located by county and state. Each entry includes the name’s language of origin, if known, and a brief discussion of its etymology, including its earliest known occurrence in written records, the history of its appearance on maps, and the name’s current status. The book’s second section presents nearly 200 place names that, though widely believed to be of Indian origin, are “imports, inventions, invocations, or impostors.” Mistranslations are abundant in place names, and Grumet has ferreted out the mistakes and deceptions among home-grown colonial etymologies that New Yorkers have accepted for centuries. Complete with a concise history of Greater New York, a discussion of the region’s naming practices, a useful timeline, and four maps, this is an invaluable resource both for scholars and for readers who want a more intimate knowledge of the place where they live or visit.

Book The Newspaper Club The Cubs Get the Scoop

Download or read book The Newspaper Club The Cubs Get the Scoop written by Beth Vrabel and published by Running Press Kids. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tag along with a rambunctious group of kid reporters as they fight for their right to run a newspaper in this exciting book from an award-winning author. The Cub Report is up and running and getting great response in the sleepy town of Bear Creek, Maine. But when Gordon snaps a photo of an escaped prisoner who is caught in a pigpen, things quickly take a turn for Nellie and her staff. While Nellie fights off jealousy at all the national media attention Gordon is receiving (even from Ellen!) for his amazing shot, the other Cubs are breaking away as parents start questioning the safety (and validity) of a kid-run independent newspaper. But when Gordon's mom and a reporter from another town's newspaper try to shut down The Cub Report for good, Nellie, Gordon, and the club must set aside their issues to save their right to report the news. Award-winning author Beth Vrabel tackles the topic of who should report the news while also focusing on themes of friendship, jealousy, and teamwork in the second book in The Newspaper Club series.

Book The Great Glacier and Its House

Download or read book The Great Glacier and Its House written by William Lowell Putnam and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 1982-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning forty years, this book recreates the spirit of a golden age of exploration and travel when adventure-seeking men and women made grand tours into an unknown wilderness and alpinists, scientists, photographers, and tourists discovered for the first time the secrets of a great and varied land. In the mighty Selkirk Mountains of Canada lies Rogers Pass which was the scene of three major events in the history of North America: in 1884, it presented an enormous obstacle to the Canadian Pacific Railway in its drive to connect the new nation coast-to-coast; it became the site of the first modern, European-style resort hotel in the mountains; and it was the first locality to attract the attention of serious mountaineers from around the world. Putnam blends these three events and weaves them into an accurate early history of the region. He shares with us the heroic, often tragic, tale of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He takes us into the magnificent surroundings of the Great Glacier and we see the modest Glacier House develop through the years into a world- famous luxury hotel. And as the Rogers Pass Glacier area becomes the focal point in the fledgling sport of alpinism in North America, we join the earliest expeditions undertaken in the Selkirk Range. The focus of the book, however, is on the people whose paths cross at Glacier House -- and the author lets them tell their own stories. The personalities of the railroad executives and the hotel staff emerge from correspondence and reports. As a basis of much of the book, Putnam has included many firsthand accounts from the Glacier House register. Known as "The Scrapbook," it contains the handwritten accounts of virtually every notable climber and mountain explorer of the early era. Magnificent historical photographs, many of them never before published, exquisitely illustrate the book. The forty-year saga is vividly retold through these rare photographs of the scenes those early adventurers witnessed when they first visited the Great Glacier and its house.
