Wheeler, Over the First Church and Parish at Standish, Maine, Jan. 14, 1835 The atonement through Christ has often been, and may most properly be denominated the most essential doctrine of the gos pel. It is a doctrine too in which all Christians are agreed. But, in making this remark, it is necessary to distinguish between the mode and the fact The fact constitutes a doctrine of infinite practical moment, and in that 'all Christians are agreed. The mode belongs to those hidden counsels of God, which even reve lation does not permit us fully. To fathom, and it is therefore the subject of much controversy. The fact of the atonement we re cognize, whenever we offer our prayers to God as children to a propitious Father, whenever we trust his care and love, whenev er we look forward with confidence to his heavenly home. The mode we may know or not know; we may understand it rightly or may err concerning it; yet if we only trust in the fact of the atonement, and follow it out to its practical consequences, we may be sure of reaping its benefits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farewell Discourse: Delivered to the Church and Society of the First Parish in West Springfield, May 3, 1835, on Resigning His Pastoral Charge Under the circumstances of the present occasion, brethren, I think I cannot select language more appro priate from which to address you - certainly _none more in accordance with my own feelings, than this of the Apostle. The union which has subsisted so happily between us is broken. In this sanctuary where we have enjoyed many precious seasons, we meet for the last time as pastor and people: we meet to offer the parting address. I confess my heart sinks at the thought. Suffer me to speak a few words of exhortation and counsel before we separate. Let us guide our meditations by the several parts of the verse before us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of A Midwife's Tale, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize for History, and The Age of Homespun--a revelatory, nuanced, and deeply intimate look at the world of early Mormon women whose seemingly ordinary lives belied an astonishingly revolutionary spirit, drive, and determination. A stunning and sure-to-be controversial book that pieces together, through more than two dozen nineteenth-century diaries, letters, albums, minute-books, and quilts left by first-generation Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, the never-before-told story of the earliest days of the women of Mormon "plural marriage," whose right to vote in the state of Utah was given to them by a Mormon-dominated legislature as an outgrowth of polygamy in 1870, fifty years ahead of the vote nationally ratified by Congress, and who became political actors in spite of, or because of, their marital arrangements. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, writing of this small group of Mormon women who've previously been seen as mere names and dates, has brilliantly reconstructed these textured, complex lives to give us a fulsome portrait of who these women were and of their "sex radicalism"--the idea that a woman should choose when and with whom to bear children.

Book Science and Religion

Download or read book Science and Religion written by Pietro Corsi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Religion assesses the impact of social, political and intellectual change upon Anglican circles, with reference to Oxford University in the decades that followed the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. More particularly, the career of Baden Powell, father of the more famous founder of the Boy Scout movement, offers material for an important case-study in intellectual and political reorientation: his early militancy in right-wing Anglican movements slowly turned to a more tolerant attitude towards radical theological, philosophical and scientific trends. During the 1840s and 1850s, Baden Powell became a fearless proponent of new dialogues in transcendentalism in theology, positivism in philosophy, and pre-Darwinian evolutionary theories in biology. He was for instance the first prominent Anglican to express full support for Darwin's Origin of Species. Analysis of his many publications, and of his interaction with such contemporaries as Richard Whately, John Henry and Francis Newman, Robert Chambers, William Benjamin Carpenter, George Henry Lewes and George Eliot, reveals hitherto unnoticed dimensions of mid-nineteenth-century British intellectual and social life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What social conditions and intellectual practices are necessary in order for religious cultures to flourish? Paul Griffiths finds the answer in "religious reading" --- the kind of reading in which a religious believer allows his mind to be furnished and his heart instructed by a sacred text, understood in the light of an authoritative tradition. He favorably contrasts the practices and pedagogies of traditional religious cultures with those of our own fragmented and secularized culture and insists that religious reading should be preserved.
