Book Religious Faith and Teacher Knowledge in English Language Teaching

Download or read book Religious Faith and Teacher Knowledge in English Language Teaching written by Bradley Baurain and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) stands at an active crossroads – issues of language, culture, learning, identity, morality, and spirituality mix daily in classrooms around the world. What roles might teachers’ personal religious beliefs play in their professional activities and contexts? Until recently, such questions had been largely excluded from academic conversations in TESOL. Yet the qualitative research at the core of this book, framed and presented within a teacher knowledge paradigm, demonstrates that personal faith and professional identities and practices can, and do, interact and interrelate in ways that are both meaningful and problematic. This study’s Christian TESOL teacher participants, working overseas in Southeast Asia, perceived, explained, and interpreted a variety of such connections within their lived experience. As a result, the beliefs-practices nexus deserves to be further theorized, researched, and discussed. Religious beliefs and human spirituality, as foundational and enduring aspects of human thought and culture, and thus of teaching and learning, deserve a place at the TESOL table.

Book excerpt: Issues in Religion and Education, Whose Religion? is a contribution to the dynamic and evolving global debates about the role of religion in public education. This volume provides a cross-section of the debates over religion, its role in public education and the theoretical and political conundrums associated with resolutions. The chapters reflect the contested nature of the role of religion in public education around the world and explore some of the issues mentioned from perspectives reflecting the diverse contexts in which the authors are situated. The differences among the chapters reflect some of the particular ways in which various jurisdictions have come to see the problem and how they have addressed religious diversity in public education in the context of their own histories and politics. Book Does Religious Education Have a Future

Download or read book Does Religious Education Have a Future written by Mark Chater and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of religion in the modern world has changed significantly over the past two decades. This has been partially reflected in the academic study of religion, but little, if at all, in religious education. In addition, the place of RE in schools has been the subject of intense debate due to changes to the curriculum and school structure, as well as being part of wider debates on religion in the public sphere. Written by two highly experienced leading practitioners of RE, Does Religious Education have a Future? argues for a radical reform of the subject based on principles of pedagogy set free from religious concerns. It challenges teachers, researchers and educators to rethink their approaches to, and assumptions about, religious education, and enables them to see their work in a larger context that includes pedagogical ideas and political forces. The book offers readers fresh, provocative and expertly informed critical perspectives on: the global context of RE, debates about religion in public places, religion’s response to modernity, violent extremism, science and secularism; the evolving educational rationale for RE in schools; the legal arrangements for RE and their impact on the teaching of the subject; the pedagogy of teaching approaches in RE and their effect on standards and perceptions of the subject; the educational commitment of faith/belief communities, and how this influences the performance of RE. Does Religious Education have a Future? proposes a new attitude to the subject of religious education, and a new configuration of both its role and content. This book is essential reading for academics, advisers and policy makers, as well as teachers of RE at primary and secondary levels and trainee and newly qualified teachers.

Download or read book Religion in the Classroom written by Jonathan M. Golden and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable resource for understanding religion's place in American schools and in matters concerning the separation of church and state in the United States. The framers of the American Constitution, in drafting the so-called "Establishment Clause" of the First Amendment-Congress shall not establish nor prohibit the practice of religion-intentionally juxtaposed two seemingly contrasting articles, understanding that we would grapple with these questions anew each day. And, indeed, we have. This book treats the Constitution, and the First Amendment in particular, as a living document, one that requires interpretation and re-interpretation on a regular basis as our nation and its people evolve. The book begins with an overview essay discussing the background of the contemporary debate over religion in schools. A timeline then highlights key events related to religion and education. Approximately 50 alphabetically arranged reference entries follow. These focus on contemporary concerns and provide objective, fundamental information about events, legislation, people, and other topics. The entries provide cross-references and suggestions for further reading, and the volume closes with an annotated bibliography.
