Book Joseph Smith s Polygamy Volume 3 Theology

Download or read book Joseph Smith s Polygamy Volume 3 Theology written by Brian C. Hales and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans of Joseph Smith’s day, steeped in the stories and prophecies of the King James Bible, certainly knew about plural marriage; but it was a curiosity relegated to the misty past of patriarchs Abraham and Jacob, who never gave reasons for their polygamy. It was long abandoned, Christians understood, by the time Jesus set forth the dominating law of the New Testament. But how did Joseph Smith understand it? Where did it fit in the “restitution of all things” (Acts 3:21) predicted in the New Testament? What part did it play in the global ideology declared by this modern prophet who produced new scripture, new revelation, and new theology? During Joseph Smith’s lifetime, polygamy was taught and practiced in intense secrecy, with the result that he never fully explained its doctrinal underpinnings or systematized its practice. As a result, reconstructing Joseph Smith’s theology of plurality is a task that has seldom been undertaken. Most theological examinations have either focused on its development during Brigham Young’s Utah period, with its need to resist increasing federal legislative and judicial pressures, or the efforts of twentieth-century and contemporary “fundamentalists” who continue to marry a plurality of wives. Volume 3 of this three-volume work builds on the carefully reconstructed history of the development of Mormon polygamy during Joseph Smith’s lifetime, then assembles the doctrinal principles from his recorded addresses, the diary entries of those closely associated with him, and his broader teachings on the related topics of obedience to God’s will, marriage and family relations, and the mechanics of eternal progression, salvation, and exaltation. The revelation he dictated in July 1843 that authorized the practice of eternal and plural marriage receives unprecedented examination and careful interpretation that illuminate this significant document and its underlying doctrines. Attempts to explain the history of Joseph Smith’s polygamy without comprehending the theological principles undergirding its practice will always be incomplete and skewed. This volume, which takes those principles and evidences with the utmost seriousness, has produced the most important explanation of “why” this ancient practice reemerged among the Latter-day Saints on the shores of the Mississippi in the early 1840s.

Book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days

Download or read book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three volumes of Saints tell the story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Joseph Smith’s First Vision to the dedication of the first temple outside North America. Now, the fourth volume carries the story to the present day, recounting the Church’s astounding growth and inspired development since 1955. As the book opens, the Church has nine temples and more than one million members. Thousands of missionaries are preaching the restored gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. And for the first time in history, sacred saving ordinances are available in multiple languages. But the work of the Lord is not yet done. While many nations, kindreds, tongues, and people thirst for restored truth, the world is troubled by war, civil unrest, sickness, hunger, and prejudice. The Latter-day Saints, too, have much to learn about each other as the Church spreads far and wide, welcoming people from many cultures and traditions. The Lord’s command to “be one” has never been more vital—or more challenging—for His people to follow. Sounded in Every Ear is the final book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, and written under the direction of the First Presidency, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write a history “for the good of the church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).

Book An Inquiry Into the Existence of Guardian Angels

Download or read book An Inquiry Into the Existence of Guardian Angels written by Pierre Jovanovic and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Pierre Jovanovic was a reporter for Quotidien de Paris, he had just finished an interview and was driving home on a Silicon Valley freeway when he was suddenly hurled to the side of the car by a mysterious force. Seconds later, a bullet crashed through the windshield and buried itself in the back of the passenger's seat. Highway patrolmen told him that if he hadn't moved, he would have been killed instantly." "Shaken and curious, he began to compare notes with other journalists, many of whom were war-zone survivors. Most had had some kind of comparable experience of being snatched from death by an unseen hand." "Pierre began to interview authorities on near-death experience: Melvin Morse, Kenneth Ring, and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. He collected first-hand accounts of the appearance of spiritual beings from adults and children all over the world. Voraciously, he began to read about the lives and Angelic accounts of the saints." "The book is the sum of his investigations and includes eyewitness accounts of the experiences of pilots, doctors, and journalists; interviews with leading near-death researchers and scientists; interviews with modern saints and visionaries on their mystical experiences from the Middle Ages to the present."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days Volume 3

Download or read book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days Volume 3 written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of opposition, the Latter-day Saints have dedicated the Salt Lake Temple, a mighty symbol of their industry and faith. Now, with a new century on the horizon, the Saints are optimistic about the future and ready to spread the Savior’s message of peace across the globe. But the world is rapidly changing. Advances in transportation and communication allow people and information to cross vast distances in record time. And young people are venturing far from home as never before, seeking educational and professional opportunities their parents and grandparents could hardly imagine. As the Church begins to take root in Europe, South America, and Asia, the Saints rejoice in the rise of the global Church. Yet many are wary of the challenges the changing world poses to the cause of Zion. While the promise of the new century is bright, it comes with dire economic hardships, brutal global wars, and other unprecedented trials. Boldly, Nobly, and Independent is the third book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, and written under the direction of the First Presidency, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write a history “for the good of the Church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).
