Book excerpt: Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan is the longest martial conflict in its history precipitated literally overnight by a world changing event in the 2001 9/11 attack in New York City. In 2010, the Afghan “Mission” remains front page news for Canadians, even threatening to undermine the Federal Government due to the so-called “Detainee Scandal.” The human cost (Canadian and Afghan), financial burdens and impact on the self-perception of Canadians as a peace keeping “Middle-Power” are immense and likely will form a watershed in Canadian history. And yet, the “Mission” remains little scrutinized by faith communities, and further, left as a non-conversation for many and the domain of a nebulous foreign policy and largely toothless Manley Report. This volume is the first such major attempt by the Centre for Public Theology to bring together theologians, philosophers, faith leaders, NGOs, politicians and other academics from sociology, politics and peace-keeping in order to dialogue about the impact of the Afghan “Mission.” These papers form much of the conversation of a conference held in May 2009 at the Centre for Public Theology. The papers offer reflections on the Manley Report, investigations on the theological and philosophical issues at play in Canada’s response, interaction with Canada’s shift from “peace-keeping” to “war-fighting” and the new NATO mandate, thoughts on the role of Islamic nations and analysis of the role of the Abrahamic faith communities in this wider Canadian conversation. The Centre for Public Theology is a federally funded research centre housed at Huron University College whose mandate is to bring into conversation academics, NGOs, media, Government and the public on issues of public policy and life with a particular attention to the role of religion in Canadian life. Its founding motto is “intelligence, not advocacy.” It is not an advocacy or lobbying centre, instead seeking only to facilitate dialogue across boundaries. Book excerpt: One of our most important political theorists pulls the philosophical rug out from under modern liberalism, then tries to place it on a more secure footing. We think of modern liberalism as the novel product of a world reinvented on a secular basis after 1945. In The Theology of Liberalism, one of the country’s most important political theorists argues that we could hardly be more wrong. Eric Nelson contends that the tradition of liberal political philosophy founded by John Rawls is, however unwittingly, the product of ancient theological debates about justice and evil. Once we understand this, he suggests, we can recognize the deep incoherence of various forms of liberal political philosophy that have emerged in Rawls’s wake. Nelson starts by noting that today’s liberal political philosophers treat the unequal distribution of social and natural advantages as morally arbitrary. This arbitrariness, they claim, diminishes our moral responsibility for our actions. Some even argue that we are not morally responsible when our own choices and efforts produce inequalities. In defending such views, Nelson writes, modern liberals have implicitly taken up positions in an age-old debate about whether the nature of the created world is consistent with the justice of God. Strikingly, their commitments diverge sharply from those of their proto-liberal predecessors, who rejected the notion of moral arbitrariness in favor of what was called Pelagianism—the view that beings created and judged by a just God must be capable of freedom and merit. Nelson reconstructs this earlier “liberal” position and shows that Rawls’s philosophy derived from his self-conscious repudiation of Pelagianism. In closing, Nelson sketches a way out of the argumentative maze for liberals who wish to emerge with commitments to freedom and equality intact.

Dickinson discusses the opposing poles simply as manifestations of reform and revolution, characteristics intrinsic to the nature of theological discourse itself. Outlining the illuminating space of theology, Theological Poverty in Continental Philosophy breaks new ground for critical theology and continental philosophy. Within the theology of poverty, the believer renounces the worldly for the divine. Through this focus on the poverty intrinsic to religious calling, the potential for cross-pollination between the theological and the secular is highlighted. Ultimately situating the virtue of theological poverty within a poststructuralist, postmodern world, Dickinson is not content to position Christian philosophy as the superior theological position, moving away from the absolute values of one tradition over another. This universalising of theological poverty through core and uniting concepts like grace, negation, violence and paradox reveal the theory's transmutable strength. By joining up critical theology and the philosophy of religion in this way, the book broadens the possibility of a critical dialogue both between and within disciplines.

Unexplainable events shall always occur in human history to point humanity to the Creator. Imperfect people and impoverished people will have to assume the role of "Pathfinders." No other options shall avail them to find their Divine destiny. Equal status can only mean being a nation the same as others. Ostracism has made quality an impossibility in the current system. Rather than accept a life as a second class citizen, Nation Building shall provide equality, respect, and opportunity. First, nation has to be defined. Webster has put forth the following definition: A stable, historically developed of people with a territory, economic life, distinctive culture, and language in common. The following will detail an examination of the six points within the definition of nation. It would be ludicrous to expect all people to respond affirmatively to Nation Building. Affirmation shall come from those who have ears to hear the voice of the Spirit. Theocracy will never alter a Divine Plan based on democracy. God shall speak that which does not exist into being. His omniscience will appoint the time existing systems and reigning powers shall witness a new standard of moral excellence and consecrated holiness. The injustices that have been rehearsed against the imperfect people and the impoverished people will rest at the heart of the Immanuel Nation In Christ (INIC) and Nation Building. God will raise up the INIC to show His mercy and power on behalf of the oppressed. The Father shall exhibit His faithfulness as a God of Justice. Nation Building shall arise as God will triumph over wickedness and the abuse of the less fortunate. The Jewish nation had arisen as God would use them to execute judgment on the occupiers of Palestine. Whenever the wicked prevail over the meek, God will intervene. He shall plant a people to become His witness. The imperfect people and the impoverished people of this era will be used by God to demonstrate His love and compassion. By raising up a nation in this contemporary age, God will do so without preference or bias. He shall do so by choosing the weak or the least enviable to show His great and authentic power. The emergence of the Immanuel Nation in Christ (INIC) will awaken people who have been trapped in poverty and disenfranchised from the current political system. God has not reclined un-attentively to human activity. He has not chosen a heavenly view to keep vigil as the world affairs unfold. His instructions shall provide victorious strategies over the opposition's most brilliant designs of oppression. The exertion shall raise the consciousness of the imperfect people, impoverished people, progressive individuals, and justice seekers to the level of Nation Building. The compulsory measures toward Nation Building will be explored in this volume. Within the content of this material, the imperfect people and impoverished people shall receive the resolution and determination to cherish Nation Building. The progressive individuals and justice seekers will find the spiritual, intellectual, and theoretical mix to invoke Nation Building.

As wartime bishop, he co-authored a "Pastoral Letter on the Jewish Question", which publicly decried the deportation of Jews to Poland in 1942; in 1944 he was imprisoned by the Gestapo for giving moral support to the Slovak National Uprising against the fascist puppet regime. Hinlicky traces the intellectual journey with ethical idealism's faith in the progressive theology of history that ended in dismay and disillusionment at the revolutionary pretensions of Marxism-Leninism. Hinlicky shows Osusky's dramatic rediscovery of the apocalyptic "the mother of Christian theology", and his input into the discussion of the dialectic of faith and reason after rationalism and fundamentalism.

Book excerpt: This is not a book that provides a new integrated theory of religious change in modern societies, but rather one that develops theoretical elements that contribute to the understanding of some contemporary religious developments. Most of the approaches in sociology of religion are prone to emphasise either processes of religious decline or of religious upswing. For example, secularization theory usually includes a couple of relevant factors--such as functional differentiation, economic affluence or social equality--in order to account for religious change. However, the result of such a theory's empirical analyses seems to be certain in advance, namely that the social relevance of religion is decreasing. In contrast, the religious market model devised by sociologists of religion in the US is inclined to detect everywhere processes of religious upsurge. Religion and Modernity: An International Comparison avoids a purely theoretically based perspective on religious changes. For this reason, Detlef Pollack and Gergely Rosta do not begin with theoretical propositions but with questions. The authors raise the question of how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies, and explain what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes.
