Book The relationships among physical activity physical fitness stress and coronary artery disease CAD risk factors

Download or read book The relationships among physical activity physical fitness stress and coronary artery disease CAD risk factors written by Deborah Sue Rohm Young and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity and psychosocial stress have both been identified as risk factors for CAD. Regular physical activity (resulting in a state of physical fitness) positively impacts several CAD risk factors and also may decreas stress. It is unknown, however, if regular physical activity can reduce the deleterious effects of stress on CAD risk factors. This investigation examined physical activity, physical fitness, stress, and CAD risk factors in a population with a stressful work environment. The variables were assessed on 412 male and 47 female police officers from the City of Austin. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol were collected through screenings. Smoking habits, physical activity level, type A behavior score, perceived general stress, perceived job stress, and job strain (e.g., decision latitude and psychological demands) were assessed from self-report. Percent body fat and maximal time on the treadmill (physical fitness measure) were collected from existing data. Physical fitness level was negatively related to percent fat, number of cigarettes smoked/day, and diastolic blood pressure. Higher physical fitness levels were associated with higher HDL cholesterol and type A score. No significant relationship was found regarding physical activity for CAD risk factors. Type A score was higher with higher general stress and job stress levels. General stress was also positively related to number of cigarettes smoked/day and diastolic blood pressure. Decision latitude and psychological demands were not related to any CAD risk factors. Stress scores were not different across physical activity or physical fitness levels. There were interactions noted between the independent variables job stress, composite stress, physical activity, physical fitness, and some risk factors. HDL cholesterol remained enhanced in the high active and fit levels at high stress. Smoking habits were lower with higher stress in the high active and fit, but higher at lower activity and fitness levels with higher stress levels. These findings suggest that physical fitness, general stress, and job stress are associated with several CAD risk factors. Physical activity/ physical fitness may mediate the deleterious effects of stress for some risk factors.

Book The Role of Physical Fitness on Cardiovascular Responses to Stress

Download or read book The Role of Physical Fitness on Cardiovascular Responses to Stress written by Arto J Hautala and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular responses to physical and/ or mental stressors has been a topic of great interest for some time. For example, significant changes of cardiovascular control and reactivity have been highlighted as important mechanisms for the protective effect of exercise as a simple and effective, non medical therapy for many pathologies. However, despite the great number of studies performed to date (e.g. >54,000 entries in Pubmed for “cardiovascular stress”), important questions of the role stress has on cardiovascular function still remain. For instance, What factors account for the different cardiovascular responses between mental and physical stressors? How do these different components of the cardiovascular system interact during stress? Which cardiovascular responses to stress are the most important for identifying normal, depressed, and enhanced cardiovascular function? Can these stress-induced responses assist with patient diagnosis and prognosis? What impact does physical fitness have on the relationship between cardiovascular function and health? The current topic examined our current understanding of cardiovascular responses to stress and the significant role that physical fitness has on these responses for improved function and health. Manuscripts focusing on heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate recovery, and other novel cardiovascular assessments were especially encouraged.

Book Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Download or read book Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention written by Peter Kokkinos and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention helps students understand the epidemiology behind the assertion that physical activity is associated with better health and quality of life. This text addresses the principles governing physical activity, the methods for measuring exertion, the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to physical activity, and cardiovascular disease and risk factors.

Book A Study of the Relationship of Physical Activity to Cardiovascular Disease Mortality

Download or read book A Study of the Relationship of Physical Activity to Cardiovascular Disease Mortality written by Martha Louise Slattery and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years of mortality follow-up were used to study the effect of physical activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in white male US Railroad workers (n = 3043). Caloric intake, leisure time activity (LTA), and working pulse rate were used as indices of physical activity. The interrelationships among these physical activity indices, other measures of physical fitness, and the CVD risk factors of obesity, serum cholesterol, blood pressure, and smoking were studied. These physical activity indices were significantly related to each other, to physical fitness variables, and to CVD risk factors. Caloric intake and LTA were significantly inversely related to CVD mortality after adjusting for age. Point estimates of risk were 1.3 and 1.4 respectively. Logistic regression analyses in the CVD free (n = 2578) showed that caloric intake was attenuated by SBP, however serum cholesterol and smoking improved the caloric intake/CVD mortality relationship. LTA remained a significant independent predictor of CVD with age, SBP, serum cholesterol, and smoking in the model. The age adjusted risk estimate of working pulse rate on CVD mortality was 1.5. It remained significantly related to CVD deaths with age, serum cholesterol, and smoking in the model, however, addition of SBP to the model resulted in working pulse rate no longer being an independent predictor of CVD mortality. In general, it may be concluded that these results support the hypothesis that physical activity protects against CVD mortality. Furthermore, physical activity appears to be directly as well as indirectly related to CVD mortality.

Book A Study of the Relationship Between Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Fitness and Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors in Female Adolescents

Download or read book A Study of the Relationship Between Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Fitness and Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors in Female Adolescents written by Janice Elizabeth Stuff and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main result was that cardiovascular fitness appeared to be more strongly associated with blood lipids than physical activity. An interaction between cardiovascular fitness and sexual maturation indicated that the effect of cardiovascular fitness on most blood lipids was dependent on the stage of sexual maturation.
