Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the effects of campus culture on minority students' perceptions of their academic success at a predominately White technical college in Pennsylvania. Critical Race Theory (CRT) formed the foundation for the study and defines the researches stances. In addition, retention models as identified by the literature, specifically Kuh and Love's (2000) cultural perspective on student departure, and studies investigating campus culture at PWIs develop the second and third prongs of the conceptual framework. The study sought to answer the central research question: How do minority students perceive the effect of campus culture on their integration to campus? Current students at the site institution participated in focus groups and responded to a qualitative open-ended questionnaire. Existing institutional campus climate quantitative data was analyzed by race to determine if there was significant difference in feeling a sense of belonging between students of different racial backgrounds. Data were analyzed and coded to inform results. The findings revealed four major themes regarding minority student perceptions of the effect of campus climate on academic and social integration: (a) Campus Climate, (b) Campus Involvement, (c) Support of Faculty and Staff, and (d) Positive Academic Experiences. The findings were situated within the literature to present three results of the study, (a) Participants perceive the campus climate to be inhospitable, (b) Participants are very engaged in the academic experiences, and (c) Participants have had positive social engagement experiences through events and organizations that have provided a niche to minority students. The desired outcome of the study was to use the findings to guide future practice in the area of increasing retention and graduation rates of minority students through creating inclusive campus environments.

Book excerpt: The current study explored perceived racism, mental health, and coping to see how those concepts might influence how African American students evaluate their college experiences. Additionally, this study explored how school environment (i.e., predominantly White institution [PWI] vs. historically Black college/university [HBCU]) impacted the hypotheses. All participants completed an online questionnaire. Findings for the key hypotheses of this study were mixed. For example, regardless if African American students attended a PWI or HBCU, they were both likely to report similar experiences of perceived racism and negative affect. Despite these and a few other relevant hypotheses not being supported, two significant findings were uncovered. Specifically, African American students at the HBCU were found to utilize more Africultural-based coping behaviors compared to African American students at the PWI. Also, contrary to my hypothesis, endorsement of public regard attitudes was higher at the HBCU compared to the PWI. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Racial factors have been shown to play a role in the adjustment of African American college students attending predominantly White institutions (Ancis, Sedlacek, & Mohr, 2000; Davis et al., 2004; Jones, 2004; Solórzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000; Swim, Hyers, Cohen, Fitzgerald, & Bylsma, 2003). Social support also appears to be an important factor in the successful adjustment of African American students at PWIs (Bean, Bush, et al., 2003; Cohen & Wills, 1985; Guiffrida, 2003, 2004, 2005; Harris & Molock, 2000; Hinderlie & Kenny, 2002; Kimbrough et al., 1996; Lin, Dean, & Ensel, 1986; Mallinckrodt, 1988; Utsey et al., 2000). Utilizing a longitudinal design, the present study investigated how race-related factors such as racial identity, racial socialization, and racial climate influenced the college adjustment experience of African American students as well as how these factors influenced the size and racial composition of the social support networks. It was hypothesized that social support may play a mediating role in the relationship between these racial factors and college adjustment and that these relationships would vary by class status (freshman vs junior transfer students). Results were mixed and indicated that current racial climate and private regard were concurrently, but not prospectively, associated with overall college and institutional adjustment. This effect was moderated by class status. However, the size and racial composition of social support providers was not predicted by any racial factors nor did it predict college adjustment. Limitations and broad implications of findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine how racial identity of African American college students can impact their ability to assimilate on predominately White college campuses to the point of hindering their retention. This study was a sequential explanatory mixed method study. Phase one of the study was a quantitative survey consisting of 25 questions that was completed by N=125 African American students attending a Predominately White University in the Mid-West. Phase two of the study was a convenience sample of thirteen African American students living on and off campus. The following research questions were addressed to explore the research topic. (1) How does racial identity impact African American college students' ability to assimilate at a predominately White university with a high enrollment of African American college students? (2) How do African American college students perceive their college/university's commitment to them? (3) How do African American college students perceive their racial identity impacting their lives? The findings of the study showed that the complexities of racism and stereotypical perceptions made the process of assimilating into the college environment holistic, including social, academic, internal and external variables that impacted their ability to assimilate and form relationships needed to have a well-rounded college experience. However, many of the students interviewed felt some of the stereotypical perceptions are sometimes perpetuated by the actions of their Black peers. During a few of the interviews, students (N=7) described their dismay with the behavior that some of their peers exhibited. The participants that were interviewed felt that the students' success should be a shared responsibility. It should be up to the students to be accountable; one participant stated "too often people want to blame others for things that happen to them." Furthermore, he explained that he takes full responsibility for the 2.0 grade point he had at the end of the last semester, but he is now looking at a 3.2 for this semester. Many of the students expressed that they did feel the faculty and staff ratio could be more representative of the African American population. The students also felt the administration could do more to bring the students together as a whole, the students of color and the White students. The consensus of the interviews was that Black people as a whole, in the eyes of the boarder society, are not respected nor looked at as assets. Many of the students interviewed felt that if the Black students and the White students had more opportunities to engage outside of the classroom, they may see Blacks beyond the stereotypical perceptions.

Book excerpt: College attrition represents a serious and persistent problem for ethnic minority students. Although there has been a plethora of research examining retention rates, most have focused on difficulty paying for college and financial strain. Importantly, past studies suggest that minority stress in the form of discrimination and lack of support on campus represents an additional barrier for African American students at predominantly White four-year institutions. The current study furthers our understanding of the experience of African American students by focusing on a previously unstudied race-related stress: systemic racism. Furthermore, the current investigation focuses on mental and physical health outcomes among students, in addition to academic outcomes which have been traditionally studied. Finally, this study examines the role of support from kin, same race friends, and religiosity as potential buffers from the impact of systemic-racism related stress. A sample of 472 students with mean age of 20.65 (SD=1.53), of which 99 identified as Black/African American and 373 as White/European American or Caucasian was recruited from a large public university. The results indicate that African American students perceived higher levels of systemic-racism related stress than their European American counterparts. Among African American respondents, systemic-racism related stress was related to lower levels of academic engagement, after control for general and undergraduate stress. Among European American students higher levels of systemic-racism related stress were related to higher levels of academic engagement. The study also finds that having many same race college friends reduces racism-related stress among African American students, while high levels of kinship support are related to higher levels of racism-related stress. Ethnic identity and racial socialization buffered the negative impact of racism-related stress on health outcomes, but only at low levels of stress. Similarly, kinship support was related to better outcomes at low levels of stress, but had no positive impact on physical or mental health outcomes at high levels of racism-related stress. Finally, religious participation and spirituality were related to lower levels of mental and physical health functioning for college students. However, at high levels of racism-stress, students with high levels of religiosity reported better adjustment than students with low levels of religiosity. The results hold important implications for the mental and physical health functioning of ethnic minority college students.
