Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the relationship between race/ethnicity and body image in a low socioeconomic group of urban adolescent boys and girls. To date, most studies on body image have studied higher SES Caucasian women and adolescent girls. Although more literature has begun to examine race/ethnicity as a factor in body image satisfaction, few have focused specifically on the impact of race/ethnicity in a low-income urban population. This study is part of a larger longitudinal study designed to examine the relationship between stress and depression in urban adolescents. The data used for this dissertation was archival and was collected during the first year of the Stress and Coping project. Data was drawn from five socio-economically disadvantaged schools in the inner city of Chicago. Measures such as the Youth Self Report (YSR) Anxious, Depressed subtest, and the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were used to assess clinical depressive symptoms and body image concerns. The participants were selected from Chicago public schools that have seventy-five percent or more students from low income families. A total of 454 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders participated in this study. Because there was a disproportionate amount of African-Americans in this sample, 150 African-Americans were randomly drawn from the sample and compared to 115 Asian-Americans, 141 Hispanics, and 48 Caucasians. Thus the sample was reduced and N = 454. A 2 x 4 {gender x race) factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to measure whether race/ethnicity in combination with gender and body image impact depression in adolescents. Results revealed a significant main effect for gender and for race. Results illustrated that females in this sample reported higher body image dissatisfaction and higher depressive symptoms compared to males. Results revealed that race/ethnicity is related to body image dissatisfaction but the combination of race/ethnicity and gender does not impact depressive symptoms. Thus this study finds that a relationship exists between race/ethnicity gender and body image dissatisfaction but there is not a relationship between race/ethnicity and depression in adolescents

Growing up African-American and Female: The Relationship Between Racial Socialization and Self-esteem of African-American Female Adolescents. (Under the direction of Dr. Stanley B. Baker.) Dominant discourse in American society has posed a problem for minority populations because social and identity constructs, such as race, gender, and class, have created a society that has not been fair for less dominant groups. Growing up in the United States as an African-American female adolescent poses particular challenges because these girls contend with typical pre-adolescent and adolescent developmental tasks along with how to negotiate their multiple identities (i.e., being Black and female). For these reasons, developmental issues for African-American adolescent girls are best understood using a multiple-lens paradigm inclusive of gender, race, ethnicity, and social class. Across disciplines, most empirical studies of African-American adolescent girls have emphasized at-risk themes, frequently neglecting normative developmental concerns. The present study explored African-American female adolescents across three socioeconomic (SES) groups to learn how girls from different backgrounds respond to racial socialization as it relates to self-esteem. Ninety-five African-American girls completed questionnaires related to SES, racial socialization experiences, and self-esteem. Correlational (Pearson product-moment) and comparison (ANOVA) statistics indicated no significant relationships between racial socialization and self-esteem, racial socialization and SES, or self-esteem and SES. A significant difference was found in racial socialization frequency scores for the middle SES group compared to the high SES group. Significant differences were also found in racial socialization agreement where the high SES group had lower scores than the low and middle SES group. The finding that more than 85% of the participants in all three SES groups had higher than avera.

Book excerpt: In the United States, there is a push for individuals to be of a particular size, and for women, that ideal size is extremely thin (Katzmarzyk & Davis, 2001). Overall, females indicate a greater drive for thinness and put more emphasis on weight and shape salience than do men (Anderson & Bulik, 2001), and they prefer a less muscular body type than men as well (Oehlhof, Musher-Eizenman, Neufeld, & Hauser, 2009). Among women, Caucasian females report more body dissatisfaction than do African American women (e.g., Kelly et al., 2011). Body dissatisfaction can be influenced by many factors; in addition to gender and race/ethnicity, those factors can include low self-esteem and high body mass index (Wojtowicz & von Ranson, 2012). This study further examines the relationship among the factors that potentially predict body dissatisfaction. 295 undergraduate females, from age 18 to age 25, participated in an online survey, in which five measures were administered. This study examines the relationship between body dissatisfaction and global self-esteem across ethnicities, in addition to exploring the impacts of race/ethnicity, body mass index, global self-esteem, contingent self-esteem, and need to belong on body dissatisfaction.

Book excerpt: Self-esteem has been the focus of a great deal of psychological research due to its many associations with well-being (Bowker, Gadbois, & Cornock, 2003; Wild, Flisher, Bhana, & Lombard, 2004). On average, self-esteem levels decrease markedly during the adolescent years (Birndorf, Ryan, Auinger, & Aten, 2005; Robins & Trzesniewski, 2005). However, adolescent girls tend to experience greater declines in self-esteem than boys, yet the self-esteem of African American girls tends to remain stable (Gray-Little & Hafdahl, 2000; Robins & Trzesniewski, 2005). Developmental (e.g., Erikson, 1968; Shaffer, 2005), gender socialization (e.g., Gilligan, 1982, Turkel, 2000), and cultural diversity research (e.g., Gray-Little & Hafdahl, 2000; Twenge & Crocker, 2002) provide frameworks for understanding the differential changes in self-esteem between adolescent subgroups. However, prior research has not sufficiently considered the potential impact of role models on adolescent self-esteem, or whether the type of role models selected may be impacted by subgroup values. The goals of the present study were to examine whether a relationship existed between type of role model selected and self-esteem levels, and whether characteristics of chosen role models varied, across Caucasian and African American adolescent females. Data for other participants were reported for exploratory purposes. Participants included 53 seventh and eighth grade students. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Hoped For Possible Selves Questionnaire (PSQ), and a role models form and demographics questionnaire designed by the researcher were utilized. No hypotheses were supported, though results yielded several interesting findings. One-way ANOVAs were performed to compare self-esteem scores and frequencies of role model types. There were no differences in self-esteem across gender or ethnicity, though data trended in the predicted directions. Results additionally showed no differences across ethnicity in frequency of role model selection by type. Pearson r correlations showed that self-esteem scores were positively correlated with selection of distal role models, and negatively correlated with selection of community role models. Pearson r correlations revealed no relationship between self-esteem scores and frequency of distal-associated ideals or proximal-associated ideals. Qualitative analysis illustrated qualities admired by participants. Implications for clinicians, parents, and educators were discussed.

Book excerpt: This special issue addresses the construction of ethnic identity among international transracial adoptees, which typically involve the placement of Black, Asian, Hispanic, or Multiracial children with White parents. International transracial adoptees, similar to immigrants, navigate a cultural and ethnic context other than their birth culture. However, they are unique in that they navigate these experiences within families who don’t share their cultural, ethnic, and racial background. Critical questions emerge about the construction and development of their ethnic identity. These questions include the role that transracial adoptive parents play in providing cultural socialization (exposure to children’s birth culture); the impact of culture camps designed to provide cultural socialization in the context of peers; the intersection of adoptive identity and ethnic identity and youth adjustment; whether relations between ethnic identity and adjustment are linear or curvilinear; the role of bicultural identity integration as a link between ethnic identity and pscyhosocial adjustment; and ethnic identity processes among internationally transracially adopted young adults who mentor younger adoptees from similar cultures. These questions are addressed in this special issue in a collection of studies that examine ethnic identity among diverse international transracial adoptees, at different ages, adopted into two countries and using differing sample sizes and methodologies. International transracial adoptive families represent a microcosm of the growing international, transracial, and transethnic social transactions taking place in this diverse world. The collective findings in this special issue about the multidimensionality of ethnic identity and its intersectionality with other identities across developmental eras not only enhance knowledge about identity development among international transracial adoptees, but also expand understanding about identity development in general. This is the 150th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.
